Steven M Hobbs

Steven M Hobbs, 63, of Deming, NM, passed from this life to eternal life on October 22, 2021. Steve was born on February 27, 1958 to William I (Bill) and Berna L (Bernie) Hobbs in Deming, NM.

Steve graduated from Deming High School in May 1976. During high school he worked at Southside Market, he always said working for Von Rue Crawford was the best job he ever had. After graduating from high school, Steve went on to work at numerous jobs, Columbus Electric Co-op, El Paso Gas Company, El Paso Electric and Deming Aerostat, until he settled on a career with the government. He retired in April 2019 from the Federal Aviation Administration; he was a technician for the FAA for 28 years.

Steve married Tracey D Shirley, the love of his life on April 30, 1988. They went on to have three children, Mandi Charles Hobbs of Kansas, Kenna Dawn Barnes (Justin) of Deming, NM and Jacob Lee Hobbs (Dana) of Las Cruces, NM and four grandchildren, Makenzie and Lincon Barnes, Gavin Way and Wyatt Hobbs. The grandbabies were the light of his life and he was teaching them to enjoy life just like he always did.

Steve grew up at the 9th Street Church of Christ and later joined the First Baptist Church of Deming where he attended and taught youth classes for several years. He also served on the Deming School Board for six years, which he really loved and hoped to make a difference for our children and community. Steve loved to hunt, fish, camp, travel and just hang out with the family. Out of all the vacations he took, Hawaii was his favorite. Steve never met a stranger and he loved to laugh. Nothing sounded better than to hear his laughter.

Steve is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Rick Hobbs (Kim Valenzuela) of Lordsburg NM, Mike Hobbs of Deming NM, Phil Hobbs (Kristie) of Deming, NM and Gerald Anderson (Sandra) of Richland, WA and one sister Pamela Christopher (Russ) of Richardson, TX. Steve is also survived by his mother-in-law, Alice Shirley of Deming, NM, sister-in-law Kim Grant of Los Lunas, NM and brother-in-law, David Shirley (Liberty) of Carlsbad, NM and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were both of his parents and Father-in-law, Charles Shirley.

A Celebration of Life Service will be celebrated on Friday, October 29, 2021 at 1:00pm at the Pit Park Amphitheater, Deming NM. In lieu of flowers, Steve requested donations be made to NM Baptist Children’s Home, PO Box 629, Portales, NM 88130.

Charles William Hoyt

Charles William Hoyt, 64, a resident of Arenas Valley, NM entered eternal rest Thursday, October 21, 2021 at La Posada Hospice in Las Cruces, NM.  He was born January 12, 1957 in East Liverpool, Ohio to Charles Austin Hoyt and Wilma Lee Willis.

He grew up in Ohio until the age of 6yrs. old.  Then moved to Green Acres City, FL, with his mother and step-father until he joined the U.S. Army on April 30, 1994.  Charles did his basic training at Fork Polk, LA.  His duty stations were Fort Hood, TX, Crailsheim (West) Germany, Fort Lewis, Washington, Wiesbaden (West) Germany, Marheim (West) Germany, Fort Carson, CO and finally University of Wyoming as an ROTC instructor.

After retirement, Charlie lived in Laramie, Wyoming and did other types of jobs.  He tanned hides as a taxidermy, custodian of Albany County Schools and at the University of Wyoming.  In 1999 Charles decided to follow a dream of driving Semi trucks over the road.  In 2006, Charles worked on pipelines driving a semi-truck working for various companies. After that, Charles returned over the road driving until he retired December 2018, 

He moved with his wife to Arenas Valley, NM where he lived until his departure.  Charles loved his family and friends very much and likewise.

He is survived by his loving wife Judy Hoyt of the family home; two sons, Charlie Hoyt of Laramie, WY; Joshua Hoyt of Arenas Valley; one daughter, Samantha Martinez of Arenas Valley; five grandchildren, Sydney, Paul, Viva, Christian, and Piper; two brothers, Paul Hoyt of Salineville, OH, Danny Hoyt of Pittsburgh, PA; three sisters, Jenny Nolty and husband Paul of Salineville, OH; Sue Ann Ketchem and husband Al of Salineville, OH; Tracy Amedio and husband Kevin of NC.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Nancy Day and Lisa Hoyt.

Memorial service will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 27th at 12:30pm at Terrazas Funeral Chapels with Pastor Joseph Gros officiating.  Concluding service and inurnment will take place at Fort Bayard National Cemetery with full military honors.

Cremation will take place at Terrazas Crematory.

Edwin Wesley (Bud) Allen

Edwin Wesley (Bud) Allen, 88, of Amarillo, TX, formerly of Deming, NM, passed away Sunday, October 17, 2021.

His viewing will be Tuesday, October 26 at Baca's Funeral Home from 5-7pm where a rosary will follow at 7pm to be led by Suzanne Lundy. The funeral mass will be Wednesday, October 27 at 11am at Holy Family Catholic Church with burial following at Mountain View Cemetery. Fr. Prakasham Babu, Pastor will officiate.

Bud was born October 26, 1932 in Jennings, KS to Fred and Beulah Allen. He married Joyce Ronan in December of 1959 in Colorado Springs, CO. The couple moved to Deming in 1963.

Bud was a proud husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was an exceptional auctioneer, a well-known cattle trader, and a dedicated rancher. Bud loved to jitterbug with his beautiful wife, he loved to bet on a gray horse or two, and he loved his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Pennie Hooper.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce, of Amarillo, TX; his sons, Bill Allen and wife Brenda, of Deming, Steve Allen and his wife, Kim, of Deming; his son-in-law, Larry Hooper; his daughters, Cindy Tolman and husband Ray, of Deming, Becky Gilmore and husband Ed, of Amarillo, TX; 15 grandchildren and 24, with one on the way, great-grandchildren.

Jeremy Jason Gonzales

Jeremy Jason Gonzales, 38, a resident of Silver City, NM entered eternal rest Thursday, October 14, 2021 at Banner University in Phoenix, AZ.  He was born May 14, 1983 in Silver City to Steve Madrid Gonzales and AnnMarie Alvarez.

Jeremy served in the Army as an Infantryman where he fought in the war in Iraq receiving many accommodations including a Purple Heart for Valor.  He and his wife Christy,  bought Ironworks 24-7 Fitness in October of 2014 where together they built a family gym where members had a place to strengthen their bodies but also strengthen every aspect of life.  Jeremy started Strongman competitions here in Grant County in which this year will be the 4th Annual Strongman Competition.  He was the Co State Representative for United States Strongman Association for New Mexico where he coached and led a team to many victories all over the United States.  In addition, he was a 4th Degree Black Belt with the Universal Kenpo Federation under the leadership of his Grand Master, Michael Pick. He instructed many, many Kenpo students over the years to include a kid’s class he taught every week at Ironworks.  He was a soldier, warrior, husband, father, son, brother & friend. He touched the lives of so many individuals and left a huge legacy that his wife daughters, family and brothers will continue to carry on.

He is survived by his loving wife, Christy Gonzales of the family home; his mother, AnnMarie Ramirez and husband Danny of Las Cruces; four daughters, Ashley “Sissy” Gonzales, Analeya “Mouse” Gonzales, Angela “Bugsy” Gonzales, and Alexis “Bunny” Gonzales all of Silver City; one sister, Desiree M. Gonzales of Chandler, AZ; nephew, Oz Sadoway of Chandler, AZ.  He was preceded in death by his father.

A Celebration of Life Service will be celebrated on Saturday, October 23rd at 1pm at the family home 15 Coye Lane in Silver City, NM.

Cremation will take place at Terrazas Crematory.  Arrangements are with Terrazas Funeral Chapels and Crematory.

Angelica Renee Jaramillo

Angelica Renee Jaramillo, 36, a resident of Silver City, NM entered eternal rest Saturday, October 9, 2021 at Gila Regional Medical Center.  She was born December 16, 1984 in Silver City, NM to Rosalio Amaya and Joann Jaramillo.

She loved to dance and sing, especially to Selena music.  She also loved sports, cheering on her Dallas Cowboys on Sundays.

She is survived by her parents, Rosalio Amaya of Santa Clara; Joann Cruz of Silver City; three brothers, Miguel Torres of CO; Luis Torres and wife Marisa of Las Cruces; Rafael Torres of Silver City; paternal grandfather, Adolfo Amaya.  She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Juanita and Rafael Jaramillo; paternal grandmother, Eva Amaya.

The holy rosary will be recited by Father Martin Okonkwo on Thursday, October 21st at 10:00am at Our Lady of Fatima Church.  A Memorial mass will follow at 10:30am with Father Martin Okonkwo officiating.

Cremation will take place at Terrazas Crematory.  Arrangements are with Terrazas Funeral Chapels and Crematory.

Irene A. Castillo

Irene A. Castillo, 83, a resident of Bayard, NM entered eternal rest Sunday, October 17, 2021 at Fort Bayard Medical Center.  She was born September 25, 1938 in Fierro, NM to Frank Arciero and Leonor Gonzales Arciero.

She loved her entire family to visit her and cooking for them.  She enjoyed watching the Dodgers play, as well as game shows, (Everybody loves Raymond, the Food Channel, and last but not least Bobby Flay).  She look forward to going to Las Vegas, NV or anywhere she could play her slot machines with a magarita and with her hubby Joe.


She is survived by four daughters, Karen Jaure and husband Manuel of Silver City; Geraldine Castillo of Tyrone; Sandra Galaz of San Lorenzo; Veronica Castillo of Las Vegas, NM; twelve grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren, and two great great-grandchildren; one sister, Hope Arciero of Silver City.  She was preceded in death by her husband Joe R. Castillo (‘2011) her parents, three brothers, Alfredo, Alejandro, and Frank Arciero Jr., seven sisters, Julia Parson, Jocey Donahue, Lucy Peña, Lily Barka, Ramona Arciero, Irene Arciero, and Elvira Arciero.

The holy rosary will be Wednesday, October 20th at 10:30am at Our Lady of Fatima Church with Deacon Art Gutierrez reciting.  The funeral mass will follow at 11am with Father Martin Okonkwo officiating.  Pallbearers are Manuel Galaz, Antoinette Castillo, Audrey Tovar, Ernest Udero Jr., Adelina Castillo, Manuel Jaure, Samuel Galaz, and Isaiah Flores.

Concluding service cremation will take place at Terrazas Crematory. 

Inurnment will take place Thursday, October 21st at 1pm at Fort Bayard National Cemetery where she will be laid to rest with her husband.

Karen Elizabeth Marshall

Karen Elizabeth Marshall, 75, a resident of Hurley, NM entered eternal rest Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at La Posada Mesilla Valley Hospice in Las Cruces, NM. She was born April 15, 1946 in Santa Fe, NM to Melvin Oscar Short and Annie E. Hammond Short.

Karen was a very special lady to all that had the good fortune to meet her. She never met a stranger and just loved all people. She made an impact at every job she held from working at Maxwell House, to Dr. Anderson’s dental office, to Presbyterian in Albuquerque where she met the love of her life, Everett Marshall. While Everett was born and raised in Grant County, Karen quickly got to know more people and remember special things about each person. She was a great wife, mother, sister and grandmother to so many that have great memories. Life wasn’t always easy as she dealt with major medical issues for last 50 years, but one would never know from the never fading smile on her face. She held a special place in her heart for her grandson Clay and great-grandson Mathew who preceded her in death.

She is survived by her loving husband, Everett Marshall of the family home; two sons, John C. Marshall of Silver City; James Marshall and wife Mary of Silver City; three step-daughters, Carrie, Nena, and Holly; she was proud to have dozens call her grandma and great-grandma; one brother, Jeff VanBuskirk and wife Misty of Hobbs, NM; one sister, Billie Friedland and husband David; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, two special parents, Bill and Virginia VanBuskirk; one brother, Johnny VanBuskirk and one sister, Barbara; she held a special place in her heart for her grandson Clay and great-grandson Mathew who also preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be celebrated on Monday, October 18th at 1pm at Terrazas Funeral Chapels with Pastor Tom Miller officiating. Concluding service and inurnment will follow at Memory Lane cemetery.​

Cremation will take place at Terrazas Crematory. Arrangements are with Terrazas Funeral Chapels and Crematory.

Annette Ortiz

Annette Ortiz of Hurley passed away October 09, 2021 after a short battle with an illness. Annette was born on April 02, 1967 to Sally Chavez in Silver City, NM. Annette went on to having one child Michal Alcorta of Hurley. Anyone who knew Annette were touched by her love, kindness, and beauty. She loved to cook and spend as much time as she could in the company of her grandchildren. She was loved by family and friends everywhere she went. She enjoyed baking, dancing, and gardening (she didn’t mind getting her hand dirty). She also enjoyed the outdoors (camping) and had a big heart for animals. She will be dearly missed by her faithful chihuahua “Sophie Lynn Chavez”.

She is survived by her son, Michael Alcorta and grandchildren, Michael Alcorta Jr., Makayla Araiza, Savannah Alcorta, David Ray Alcorta all of Hurley. She is also survived by her mother, Sally Chavez of Mimbres; two sisters, Angie (Ricky) Sedillo, Frances (Frank) Sanchez.; one niece, Sally Alcorta and four nephews, Victor Alcorta (Emily White) children are Davianna and Gloria; Peter Alcorta and children Esperanza, Anna, Angelina, Gilbert and Sallya. As well as Anthony and David Sanchez. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter Alizandra Jasso Alcorta; nephew David Alcorta and maternal grandparents, Victorio and Angelita Ortiz and her significant other Raul Escobar.
The holy rosary will be held on Friday, October 15th at 10:30am at Our Lady of Fatima Church with Ricky Sedillo reciting. Her Memorial mass will follow at 11am with Father Martin Okonkwo officiating. Concluding service inurnment will take place at Hanover cemetery where she will be laid to rest with her grandmother Angelita Ortiz.

The family is asking that everyone that attends the service wear a mask and adhere to social distancing. The family will not entertain a fellowship gathering after service, due to the increase cases of COVID in the area. They appreciate everyone’s thoughts, prayers, and condolences.

Barbara Horning - On October 2, 2021 the good lord chose to take our family angel and soldier.
​
She was born on October 23, 1941 in Shellsburg, Iowa to William and Aletha (Barton) Raue.  She was pre deceased by 5 brothers: William Jr., Kenneth, David, Jerry and Robert 1 sister Vicky (Dolly) Gent.

She is survived by her husband Larry Horning of Deming, New Mexico, Brother Rick Raue and wife Wendy of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  A Son William Chamberlain of Marion Iowa, a daughter Eunice Turner of Deming, New Mexico, brother-in-law Mathis Gent of Marion Iowa, brother-in-law Garth Horning and wife Ginger of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and brother-in-law Craig Horning of Deming, NM.

She is survived by 2 loving grandchildren Tia Turner of Las Vegas, Nevada, Ryan Turner and wife Tamara Johnson-Turner of Aloha, Oregon. Her cherished 4 great-grandchildren Louey, Dean, Georgie Rae and Roan of Aloha, Oregon whom she loved so greatly.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved and adored.

She was a long time and devoted member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 4, Deming, NM.  She was an officer of the Unit 4 for many years. She loved and was very devoted to the American Legion Auxiliary New Mexico Girls State.  Her volunteerism and helpfulness to the many Deming projects shall be forever missed.

A Celebration of Life for Barbara shall be conducted at the American Legion, 619 W. Spruce St. at 3: 00 PM on October 23, 2021.

The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be provided to the New Mexico Girls State or to the Deming Animal Shelter.

Ronald Tharp

​​Ronald Tharp, lifelong resident of Deming received his final call on Monday August 30, 2021. He was the only child of Lena and Orley Tharp, born July 6, 1946. On August 2nd, 1969 he married his loving partner, Lois Phillips.
 
Ron was a fireman for the City of Deming for 23 years. He retired with the rank of Captain in 1989. After his retirement he enjoyed restoring old tractors and visiting with his many friends. He frequently helped in the flower shop that his parents opened in 1955. He most enjoyed making deliveries in the rural areas.
 
He is survived by his wife, Lois and his children, Susan Swope (James) and their daughters, Stephanie Moon (Wyatt) and Stacy Watkins (Colton), Nancy Prichard and her children, Ross and Amy and Tim Tharp (Heather) and their sons, Tyson and Brice.
 
There will be a graveside service on Saturday October 16, 2021 at 2 o’clock in the afternoon at Mt. View Cemetery.  Please join his family as the Deming Fire Department honors his 23 years of service to Deming and Luna County.
