George T. Lopez

George T. Lopez, 77, A former resident of Hurley, NM now of Tucson, AZ entered eternal rest on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at home surrounded by his loved ones. He was born September 5, 1943 in Santa Clara, NM to Leonor (Telles) and Juan C. Lopez.

George was very active in politics and served on the Council Board in Hurley. He was also President of the Union Local 890 and retired from Phelps Dodge after 30 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, camping in the White Mountains, watching boxing, poker and most of all his grandchildren. George will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by one son, Lawrence P. Lopez and wife Anna of Tucson, AZ; one daughter Virginia “Gina” Torres and husband Joseph “Manuel” Torres of Tucson, AZ; Five grandchildren Jennifer Neely (John); Alyssa Torres; Lawrence Lopez Jr.; Megan Ayala (Victor); Adam “Buddy” Lopez, six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death his wife Gloria P. Lopez; his parents, six sisters; Sally Lucero, Antonia “Toni” Chapin, Tommie Barela, Terri Lopez, Luisa Lopez, and Fita Lopez. Four brothers; Johnny Lopez, Joe Lopez, Richard Lopez, and Arnold “Nayo” Lopez. One great granddaughter Acelyn Nevaeh Torres.

The holy rosary will take place at Terrazas Funeral Chapels on Friday, May 28th at 2pm with Deacon David Castañon reciting. The funeral mass will follow at 3pm at Santa Clara Catholic Church with Father Casmir Anozie officiating. Concluding service and inurnment will be at Memory Lane Cemetery where he will be laid to rest by his wife Gloria. Honorary Pallbearers; Adam “Buddy” Lopez, Michael Peru; Johnathan Neely; Lawrence Lopez Jr., Victor Ayala, and Tino J. Quintana.
Cremation has taken place at Terrazas Crematory.

Aurora Roman Sanchez

Aurora Roman Sanchez went to be with her HEAVENLY FATHER on May 23, 2021 after 90 years of fulfilled life.

She was born on a Friday April 24, 1931 in Deming, NM to Federico and Apolonia (Pola) Roman. Aurora had just celebrated her birthday with her loving children, traveling within two states, and so much as staying up till 12:01 AM, to know she had made it to 90 years old, her personal goal.

“Momma”, was admired for her lifelong commitment to volunteering first as a teacher’s assistant at Bell School, working in the Nursing Home, Hospital Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, DAV Auxiliary, Deming Noon Lions Auxiliary, and especially her devotion to delivering meals on wheels to countless homebound elderly. She earned her “Golden Angel Jacket” status after over 19 years of service to the Deming Senior Center, and was always able to share a kind word to uplift Deming’s shut-ins. She will be missed by all, including her card group ladies, bingo partners and anyone else that knew her keen sense of humor, that was the cornerstone of how she kept all of her 8 children not for want.

Aurora will be deeply rewarded for her loving deeds. She was proceeded in passing by the late Marin Morales Sanchez, who was a muched loved musician and city councilman; her brother, Arturo Roman.

She is survived by her children, Celia (the late Hoss Hillman), Marin (Isabel), Mario, Freddie (Janet), Felix, Johnny (Monica), Javier (Rosa), Esperanza (Fernie) and stepson, George Holguin (Mary). Aurora had 22 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and as was her wish, cremation has taken place at Baca’s Mimbres Crematory. A Celebration of Life service will take place Friday May 28, 2021 at 10:30 AM at the Citi-Life Church, 1200 E. Pear Street. Inurnment to follow. Pastor Cesar Chavez will officiate. Services will be livestreamed by the Citi-Life Church.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Deming Senior Center “Meals on Wheels Program” 800 S. Granite St. Deming, NM 88030 in Aurora’s honor.

Jorge Cruz Bautista

Jorge Cruz Bautista, 81, a resident of Columbus, NM entered eternal rest on Friday, May 21, 2021 at Mountain View Hospital in Las Cruces, NM.

Jorge was born on April 23, 1940 in Chiapas, Mexico to Trinidad Cruz Lazaro and Carmela Bautista Morales. Jorge is survived by his great friend, Esequiel Salas. Three brothers, Trinidad Cruz, Pompolio Cruz y Manuel Cruz. One sister, Maria Elena Cruz.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 from 9:30-10:30am at Holy Family Mission Church in Columbus. Holy rosary will then begin at 10:30 with Maria de los Angeles Silva officiating.

The funeral mass will then begin at 11am with Father, Jesus Martinez officiating.

Concluding services with an interment will be at Valley Heights cemetery.

Gabriel "Gabe" Ortiz

Gabriel "Gabe" Ortiz passed peacefully, surrounded by family. He leaves behind an indelible mark on the lives of so many. He was a strong patriarch to the entire Ortiz family. He served our country honorably and worked hard his entire life to provide a wonderful life for this family. He greeted family and friends alike, with a huge smile and open arms.

Gabe's greatest legacy is his love story and life he shared with his beloved, Jutta. Together they danced through life, figuratively and literally, perfectly in sync. They shared a joyful life of travel and adventure and were admired by all that they met along the way.

Gabe will be sorely missed but we find comfort knowing he will be waiting for us all with that beautiful smile.

He is survived by his loving wife Jutta Ortiz of the family home; one son, Andreas Ortiz and wife Amy of Fort Worth, TX; one daughter, Tanya Frantz and husband Danny of Pensacola, FL; three grandchildren; Saigan. (Jordan), Crista and Raquel; four great grandchildren, Emma, Adrian, Ava, and Wake; one brother, Eliseo Ortiz and wife Cornelia of Santa Clara; two sisters, Margarita Acevedo and husband Joaquin of Silver City; Alice Villalobos of Santa Clara; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Pablo and Rita Sandoval Ortiz; his great grandchild, Aiden; one brother, Trinidad Ortiz; and one sister, Lucy Ortiz.

Interment at Fort Bayard National Cemetery will be held at a later date.

Cremation has taken place at Terrazas Crematory.

Betty Rice Reed, 92, a resident of Silver City, NM entered eternal rest Friday, May 21, 2021 at her residence. She was born April 4, 1929 to Mr. and Mrs. Rolland S. Rice.

She is survived by her brother, Rolland (Lenora); her son, Hugh (Verna); her daughter, Joan (Jeremiah); grandsons, Stewart (Jeanie); Chris (Marlene); Trey (Karen); granddaughters, Dana Reed, Heather Holguin (Daryl), Crystal McAuley (Simon), and Caitlin Gunn (Christopher); great grandchildren, Chase Reed, Logan Reed, Lydia Tuten (Hunter), Julia Mehl, Drew Mehl, Ty Holman, Danny Holman, Sarah Holman, Ailee Reed. Deakon Reed, Hannah Miller, Fitz McAuley, Franklin McAuley, and Caden Gunn.

A private service will be held with family members.

​Cremation will take place at Terrazas Crematory. Arrangements are with Terrazas Funeral Chapels and Crematory.

Roman J. Vasquez, 44, of Silver City, NM entered eternal rest Saturday, May 15, 2021 at Lovelace Hospital in Albuquerque, NM surrounded by his family. He was born to Severiano Vasquez and Angelita “Angie” Jaramillo. He was a communicant of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. His favorite past time was listening to music and riding his black Mustang. He was a very caring and loving person.

He is survived by his mother, Angie Jaramillo; his children, Anjuli, Roman Jr., Analyssia Vasquez of Silver City; one grandchild, Josiah Verlander; one brother, Severiano and wife Linda and their children, Alexus, Zachery, Sammy, and Owen Vasquez of Tucson, AZ. He was preceded in death by his father, Severiano Vasquez and grandparents.

Visitation will be Thursday, May 20th from 9-10am. The holy rosary will commence at 10am at Terrazas Funeral Chapels with Father Martin Okonkwo reciting. Concluding service and interment will follow at St. Vincent Catholic cemetery. Pallbearers are Jacob Melendrez, Juanito Woods, Lycee Rose, Seve Vasquez, Santi Jasso, Martin C. Hernandez Jr., Frankie Legarda, and Daniel Martinez. Honorary pallbearers are Jena Jaramillo, Frankie Richarte, Zachary Vasquez, and Sammy Vasquez.

Irma Naomi Valverde

Irma Naomi Valverde, 81, a resident of Deming, NM entered eternal rest on Monday, May 17, 2021 at her residence surrounded by her family.

Irma was born on April 16, 1940 in Janos, Chihuahua, Mexico to Manuel R. and Natalia E. Galindo. Graduated from Deming Highschool in 1960 Irma worked for Mountain Bell Telephone Company for 21 years. She retired and became a homemaker and helped her beloved husband maintain their apartment business for many years. Irma loved going shopping, cooking, gardening and was a Dallas Cowboys fan. She will be remembered as a very loving and caring person who welcomed anybody with open arms. She is survived by her sons, David Valverde (Fermina) and Michael Valverde (Yvonne); one sister, Ernestina and her husband Skip Kimball; four grandchildren, Christina (Jazz) Gonzales, Eric Valverde, Christopher Valverde and Bianca Valverde; five great grandchildren, Therese, Michael, Mason, Eliza and Diego; several nieces and nephews who referred to her lovingly as Nina. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Valverde; her parents and two brothers, Raul Galindo and Jaime Galindo.

Funeral mass will be on Monday, May 24, 2021 at 11:30am at St. Ann Catholic Church with Father, Jesus Martinez officiating.

Concluding services, with an interment will be at Mountain View cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Manuel Mesa, Daniel Mesa, Christopher Valverde, Eric Valverde, Jazz Gonzales and George Rodriguez.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Ambercare Hospice especially Deeandra and Edna and her caregiver Elly Acosta.

Daniel “Dan” R. White

Daniel “Dan” R. White, 90, a resident of Pinos Altos, NM entered eternal rest Thursday, May 13, 2021 at Fort Bayard Medical Center. 

He was born October 9, 1930 in Roswell, NM to Leslie White and Irene Reder White, and shortly after moved to Pinos Altos, NM.  He attended and graduated from the 8th grade from the School House in Pinos Altos in 1944 and went on to attend Silver High School and graduated in 1948. After high school he worked for the Forest Service as a lookout on the tower at Signal Peak for a season and then joined the U.S. Air Force.  He was stationed in London, England during the Korean War.  While stationed in England he met Lillian Hopla, the love of his life, they were married in England on August 23, 1952.  After he was Honorably discharged from the Air Force, he and Lillian moved to his childhood home in Pinos Altos after taking a job at Kennecott Copper in Hurley where he retired from the Engineering Department after a 30-year career.  He then went to work as a consultant in engineering for Phelps Dodge for 10 years.  He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and he loved riding his horses in the peace, quiet, and beauty of the mountains of the Gila National Forest.

He is survived by his loving wife Lillian of the family home; his son, Brian and wife Elizabeth of Placitas, NM; two daughters, Jennifer White of Silver City; Rachel White and husband Mike Head of Pinos Altos; six grandchildren, Amy, Tyler, Sarah, Magen, Sharilyn and Ryan; nine great-grandchildren, Dax, Alex, Antonio, Adrian, Corbin, Owen, Hannah, Zoey, and Ayden.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Roger and Vincent White; one brother, John “Jack” White; two sisters, Anne Strohl and Margaret Adams.

Visitation will be Friday, May 21st from 5-6pm at Terrazas Funeral Chapels  with the holy rosary at 6pm.  On Saturday, May 22nd the funeral mass will commence at 10am at St. Francis Newman Center with Father Bartholomew Ezenwelem officiating.  Concluding service and interment will follow at Pinos Altos Cemetery.  Pallbearers are Tyler Otwell, Ryan White and the Marine Corp League.

Irene A. Valenzuela, 85, entered eternal rest Saturday May 15, 2021 at her home in Deming.

Family and friends will gather Thursday May 20, 2021 at 1 o’clock at Baca’s Funeral Chapel with a rosary to be recited at 1:30 led by Christine B. Milo. Inurnment will follow at Pinos Altos Cemetery. Fr. Oliver Obele will officiate.

Irene was born December 29, 1935 to Clara Davila and Francisco Arzaga in Mogollon, New Mexico. She was a homemaker and made fresh homemade tortillas for her family. One of her greatest passion was listening to music. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by 3 daughters, Frances Lucero, Sharon Montes (Kelly) and Melissa Tovar (Robert); 5 sons; grandchildren, Francine Lucero, Irene Romero, Monica Lucero, Justin and Vanessa Montes, Monika Torres, Maya & Elyias Tovar; great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Faith, Daniel, Robert, Andrew, Zoey and Abbey; brothers, Gabriel Arzaga (Alicia), Alvino Arzaga (Mary) and Ramon Arzaga; sisters, Alicia Cardoza (Albert) and Olga Fletcher.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Genaro Valenzuela; 2 daughters; brother, Frank and Joe Arzaga; sister, Ramona Morales.

Carolyn June Castro

Carolyn June Castro 80, Deming resident entered eternal rest Monday, May 17, 2021 at her home surrounded by her loving husband.

No service will take place as were her wishes. Cremation has been entrusted to Baca’s Mimbres Crematory.

Carolyn was born September 27, 1940 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She married George T. Castro in Tampa, Florida on January 13, 1978 by Sandra P. Garrison. Together they travelled many places. She worked as RN and had her own clinic in Gallup, NM for a period of ten years specializing in children. Later they both traveled to Washington State, Alaska and Hawaii.

They made there home in Deming after retiring. Carolyn had a love to paint on her spare time.

She is survived by her loving husband, George T. Castro of the home; 3 children, Paul, Mark and Kim Prator; many grandchildren, extended family members and friends. She will be greatly missed.
