John E. Jackson

John E. Jackson, 54, a resident of Santa Clara, NM entered eternal rest Saturday, July 25, 2020 at Gila Regional Medical Center.

He was born February 9, 1966 in Globe, AZ to Jay Jackson and Maggie Bartee Jackson. John love his family and spending time with his grandchildren most of all. He loved the water, spending days hitting big waves and cool buds on Maui. Johnny was known best for his musical lifestyle and used it as a tool to teach and heal. As John would say, “Live Aloha”. The Light, The Love, The Truth, Wisdom and Strength were the words he lived his life by. We love you DAD; you will forever have our hearts. Love you Grandpo! May you rest easy.

He was survived by his loving wife, Patricia Jackson of the family home; his father, Jay Jackson; his son Jace B. Jackson and companion Kellie Shortt of Show low, AZ; his daughters, Jessica R. Jackson of Santa Fe; Jade L. Jackson of Maui, HI; three grandchildren, Elyjah, Kaden, and Makena; two brothers, Jessie and James Jackson of Hurley. He was preceded in death by his mother, his sister, Janine Jackson.

Cremation will take place at Terrazas Crematory.

Jerry Duane Leatherman

Jerry Duane Leatherman, was born November 3, 1938 in Konawa, Oklahoma to Walter and Viola (Gray) Leatherman. He passed away July 24, 2020 in Las Cruces, NM., at the age of 81 years, 8 months and 21 days. Cremation has taken place at Terrazas Funeral Chapel with a graveside memorial service to be held August 1, 2020 at 10:00am.  

Jerry is survived by one sister, Nancy M. Hays (Donnie) of Deming, NM. Preceding him in death were his parents, Walter and Viola Leatherman, three brothers: Delmer Keith, Walter Marion and Gene Doyle, two sisters: A Baby Girl and Nellie Elizabeth Hays (Sam). Jerry is also preceded in death by three half-brothers: James, Harrold and Ralph, a half-sister, Mary Theresa, and one great nephew, Roy Dean Hartman.  

He is also survived by nine nieces and nephews: Cindi Thomas of Iowa, Mindy Timmons of Oklahoma, Sheila Hartman of Wyoming, Joe Hays of Carlsbad, NM, Curtis Hays of Deming, Craig Hays of Oklahoma, Carola Covarrubia of Las Cruces, NM, Cheryl Hartman of Deming and Kenneth Hays of Deming. He also had 26 great nieces and nephews and 12 great-great nieces and nephews. He considered all of his nieces and nephews as “his grandkids”. Lovingly, they referred to him as “uncle Gum” because he always had chewing gum to pass out to them. 

He graduated from Deming High School in 1956 and spent most of his years working in different establishments in Deming. His favorite was working in furniture stores where he could spend time decorating the homes of his costumers. He did spend time working in Colorado, and Wyoming but missed his family and moved back home to Deming.  

In lieu of flowers, the family ask you to contribute to the charity of your choice.

Gena Holmes Contor

Gena Holmes Contor passed as she lived, quietly, gracefully and with the love of her life by her side in the early morning of Thursday, July 23, 2020. 

Gena was born on July 15, 1968 to Hoyt and Naomi Holmes.  She grew up in Silver City and graduated from Silver High in 1986.  In 1988, she married her husband, Nick Contor.  Five years later in 1993, she gave birth to her son J. Wesley.  In 1998, they welcomed their baby girl, Victoria.  You would rarely, see Gena outside of work without Victoria, as they were the best of friends.  Gena’s main priority in life was always her family, especially her children.  She was a mom first, above everything.  She was usually the quiet but joyful presence in the room.  She enjoyed being with family and friends.  She especially enjoyed Sunday family dinners at Julie and Harrisons, and time with her friends at Funko and Stampin’ Up gatherings.  She handcrafted cards for every occasion for those she loved.  Gena’s favorite job was at Agape Christian Academy, where she worked as the office manager for several years.  She also enjoyed her more recent job working at Walmart, where she could visit daily with family and friends, new and old. 

Gena is survived by a family that will truly miss her presence.  Her husband, Nick Contor, son J Wesley Contor (Carol) and daughter Victoria Contor all of Bayard; her mother, Naomi Holmes; sisters, Norma Moore (Alan), Vickie Moore Alvarez (Peter) and Julie Contor Smith (Harrison); brothers, Hoyt Wesley Holmes (Jennifer), Scott Holmes (Kelly), Hoyt Wayne Holmes (Heidi), Wesley Holmes (Physllis) and William; nieces, Nena Benavidez (Gabe), Sarah Heredia (Josh) Tristan Oaxaca (Victor Jr.,) and Alyssa Holmes; nephews, Hayden and Daniel Smith; great nieces and nephews, Jacob, Jasmine, Emma, Jaidyn, Sebastian, Andre, Aztan, Avikx, Angel, and Aaliyah; mother in-law, Kathleen Herrera; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and extended family members.  She was preceded in death by her father, Hoyt Sr.; father in-law, Manuel Herrera.   

A Memorial Service will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 29th at 2pm at Terrazas Funeral Chapels and with Pastor Jesse Liles officiating. 

Restrictions for COVID-19 still stand at 25% attendance capacity and masks required. 

Cremation will take place at Terrazas Crematory.

Floyd Hoffman

Floyd Hoffman, a resident of Silver City, NM, died at home surrounded by loved ones on April 13, 2020 at the age of 95.

Floyd was born in Somerset, PA on June 13th, 1924 to Wilson Hoffman and Mayme Gardner. On December 14, 1942 he was sworn into the Navy where he served for 4 years active duty and 11 years in the reserves.

He graduated from Rolla School of Mines in Missouri in January, 1950 with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering and was recruited by Phelps Dodge for their operations in Morenci, Arizona.

Before leaving for his new career he married the love of his life Virginia Mitchell on January 21, 1950. Together they welcomed their 2 beloved children Floyd (Eddie) and Barbara on November 14, 1950 and February 23, 1953 respectively.

Floyd was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed gardening, reading, collecting antique books and glass bottles, camping and rockhounding. He was active in many clubs and organizations including: Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Shriners, American Legion, and Order of Eastern Star. He also enjoyed working with children and volunteered his time coaching softball, as a boy scout leader and with Job’s Daughters. He was a spiritual man and grew up in the Lutheran Church before later joining First United Methodist Church in Silver City in 1987. During his time with Phelps Dodge he had the opportunity to travel to many different countries and loved sharing stories and souvenirs with his grandchildren. After retiring from Phelps Dodge (for a second time) in 1996 he devoted his time and energy to his family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his life and he loved all the time he was able to spend with them. There was nothing he wouldn’t have given to any of his close family or friends, even if that meant he would do without. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him.

Floyd is survived by his daughter Barbara Hoffman Wood and his son Floyd (Eddie) Hoffman and wife Sid; his 4 grandchildren, Bradley Wood and wife Erin, Robbie Hoffman and wife Michele, Krista Wood, and Deidre Wilmeth and husband Josh; his 10 great grandchildren, Kameron, Cassidy, Emily, Logan, Ryan, Maci, Kambrie, Kaylee, Ethan and Connor; 1 great-great grandson Aaron and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings and wife of 64 years, Virginia Hoffman.

A Graveside service will be held Thursday, July 30th at 10am at Fort Bayard National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please donate to the National PKU Alliance online at npkua.org.

Cremation has taken place at Terrazas Crematory.

Obed B. Quezada, 35, a resident of Deming, NM entered eternal rest in El Paso, TX on Tuesday, July 21, 2020.

Obed was born on January 24, 1985 to Refugio Quezada and Dora Borunda in Deming, NM. He is survived by both of his parents; one son, Kaleb Roman of Elko, Nevada; three half-brothers, Adrian, Alfredo and Cesar Quezada; four half-sisters, Noemi, Corina, Teresa and Gabriela Quezada and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation will be on Monday, July 27, 2020 from 10am-1pm with the holy rosary beginning at 1pm with Guillermina Macias officiating.

Funeral service will then take place at 2pm at St. Ann Catholic Church.

Concluding services with an interment will take place at Mountain View cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers are Kaleb Roman, James Mathew Pulis, Orlando Muñuz, Veronica Quezada, Miguel Cabral, Carlos Valdez and Hector Giron.

Arrangements are with Terrazas Funeral Chapel.

Salvador G. Moreno

Salvador G. Moreno, 96, a former resident of Hurley, NM entered eternal rest Monday, July 20, 2020 at Del Mar Gardens at Chesterfield, MO.

He was born May 25, 1924 in El Paso, TX to Eliseo Moreno and Encarnacion Garza Limas Moreno.

Salvador was a loving, kind and wonderful father, grandfather, and husband. He loved his family with all his heart and was devoted to God. He was a quiet person, especially after the death of his wife who he loved dearly. He lived in Hurley with his wife all his life until his stroke; when both of them had to be taken to St Louis, MO to be taken care of by their daughter. In St. Louis he had many loving and kind friends who doted on him. He became “Grandpa’ for his daughter’s friends’ and they were always buying him candy and treats and giving him hugs. He loved praying every day, watching soccer TV, playing dominos and going out with his daughter and friends and above all, hanging out with his grandson, Adam. They both made a team. The sunshine in his daughter’s life will never be as bright as when he was living. He will be in her heart and thoughts every day of her life and after.

He is survived by his daughter, Millie Bond (Gary) of St. Louis, MO; two grandsons, Adam Arellano of St. Louis; Orlando Arellano (Lei) of Placentia, CA; two great grandchildren, Zoe Isabel Arellano and Ander Arellano of Placentia, CA; two sisters, Nina Limas and Angelina Bonilla (Mario) of El Paso, TX; one brother, Jacinto Limas Jr., of El Paso, TX. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, Isabel; his son, Ruben Moreno; three brothers and two sisters.

COVID-19 restrictions still hold at 25% capacity and masks required.

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 28th from 5-6pm at Terrazas Funeral Chapels with the holy rosary being recited by Deacon Art Gutierrez to commence at 6pm.

The funeral liturgy will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 29th at 10am at Infant Jesus Shrine with Father Casmir Anozie officiating.

Concluding service and interment will follow at Hurley Cemetery where he will be laid to rest by his wife.

Pallbearers will be Gary Bond, Tomas Diaz, Artie Kirker, Genaro V. Kirker, Javier Kirker, and Xavier Kirker.

Julio Cesar Jaramillo

Julio Cesar Jaramillo, 28, a resident of Deming, NM entered eternal rest on Tuesday, July 14, 2020 in Deming.

Julio was born on January 7, 1992 Marshall, Minnesota to Rafael Palacios Jaramillo and Hermelinda Rodriguez. Julio enjoyed working out and going to events with his kids. He had a great sense of humor and always got along with everyone. He was great son, brother, husband, father and uncle. His kids were his world and he had a big heart. He will be truly missed by all of his family and friends.

He is survived by both of his parents; his wife Mariah N. Alcorta; two sons, Julio Robert Jaramillo Jr. of Deming and Daniel Cesar Jaramillo of Deming; one daughter, Sarah Nicole Jaramillo of Deming; four sisters, Veronica Reyes of Deming; Liliana Garcia of Fort Worth, TX; Talia Jaramillo of Deming and Lucero Jaramillo and her husband Jesus of Deming; his mother in law, Ann Marie Hernandez; his brother in laws, Oscar Pacheco, Gabriel Marquez and Ruben Olivas; his sister in law, Maryjane Pacheco and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Saturday, July 25, 2020 from 9-10am at Terrazas Funeral Chapel with the funeral service beginning at 10am with Pastor, Rene Andrade officiating.

Concluding services with an interment will be at Mountain View cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are 
Oscar Pacheco, Jaime Avila, Mark Avila, Manuel Garcia, Matthew Rodriguez and Mario Vasquez.

Lewis Grayson “Fuzz” Smyer

On July 18, 2020, Lewis Grayson “Fuzz” Smyer, a lifelong resident of Deming, New Mexico, passed away at the age of 63.

Grayson was raised in the Lewis Flats area of Luna County, originally settled by and named after his ancestors. He cherished the times spent exploring wilderness areas around New Mexico and had many an outdoor adventure. Grayson was an avid hunter. He enjoyed rodeoing throughout the western part of the United States. He had a passion for music encouraged by his mother, whom he always said was his best agent. Grayson engaged in many agricultural endeavors including ranching, farming and general management of Mimbres Valley Produce. He and his wife Karen operated SmyerCo, a produce brokerage company. His father instilled in him a great work ethic. He lived his life by the motto, “you can’t quit because you’re tired, you quit because the job is done.”

He is survived by his wife, Karen, his sons Tyson and Kelly Smyer and Ryan Paulk, and his grandson, Grayson Smyer. He is also survived by siblings Zack (Sarah) Smyer, Jane Anglin, Karen Hamer, Terry Maker, his uncle Frank (Fannie) Smyer, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Grayson was preceded in death by his parents Joseph H. and Iris Warnock Smyer, his beloved grandparents, and the mother of his children Margie Prince Smyer.

A celebration of Grayson’s life will be announced at a later date.

Aurelio Zamora, 71, longtime Deming resident passed away Sunday July 19, 2020 at his home.

Visitation will begin at 5 o’clock in the afternoon Wednesday July 22, 2020 at Baca’s Funeral Chapel with a rosary to follow at 6. Cremation will follow at Baca’s Mimbres Crematory.

Aurelio was born August 24, 1948 to Maria de Jesus Serrano and Ignacio Zamora in La Parrilla Nombre de Dios, Durango, Mexico. He currently was employed at Mizkan Foods where he was affectionately known as “Speedy”. He was given this nickname because he was always quick at everything he did. He was a communicant of the Catholic Church.

He is survived by his children, Alejandro Zamora, Enrique Muñoz both of Juarez, MX; daughter, Norma Rice and her husband Bradley of CO; 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Aurelio will be greatly missed for his kindness and the love he had for his family.

Betty O. Gomez, 68, passed away peacefully in her home on Friday, July 17, 2020 surrounded by her family in Bayard, NM. Betty was born on May 9, 1952 to Felipe V. and Ramona R. Ortiz in Santa Rita, NM. She married her beloved husband Robert Gomez in 1974.

Betty was a loving mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, Nina, and friend. She was amazing, caring, and loving person, who’s eyes were of life. She never hesitated to lend a hand to anyone who needed her. When Betty was around, there was never a dull moment. Everyone who met and knew her remembers all the laughs she would bring. Whether it be her stories or her posts on Facebook, Betty could bring the laughter out of anyone she talked to. She enjoyed talking to everyone she met.

Betty loved to listen and sing along to her music on the radio. She especially loved spending time with her family, especially her grandsons, Michael and Jayden. One of her favorite pastimes was watching her novelas on TV. She is survived by daughter Tanya Ortiz, her grandchildren, Michael and Jayden Gonzales; her mother and father, Felipe and Ramona Ortiz; five brothers, Daniel Ortiz and wife Rosie of Tucson, AZ; Felipe Ortiz Jr and wife Tina of Hollister, CA; Charlie Ortiz of Mimbres; Johnny Ortiz and wife Virginia of Anaheim, CA; Eloy Ortiz of Bayard; and sister, Barbara Rodriguez of Tucson, AZ; also numerous nieces, nephews, and godchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert Gomez.

Visitation will be Wednesday, July 22nd from 9-10am at Terrazas Funeral Chapels with the holy rosary being recited by Deacon Art Gutierrez to commence at 10am. The funeral liturgy will follow at 10:30am at Our Lady of Fatima Church with Father Martin Okonkwo officiating.

Concluding service and interment will follow at Hanover cemetery where she will be laid to rest by her husband.

Pallbearers will be Eloy Ortiz Jr., Charlie Ortiz, Felipe Ortiz Jr., Bobby Lucero, Michael Paul Gonzales, and Daniel Ortiz.
