Cornelio G. Madrid

Cornelio G. Madrid, 90, Deming resident entered eternal rest Monday March 19, 2018 with his loving family by his side. 
Visitation will be Friday March 23, 2018 at New Life Apostolic Church beginning at 9 o’clock in the morning where funeral services will begin at 11 o’clock. Concluding services and interment will follow at Mt. View Cemetery.  

Cornelio (Nelo) was born in Hachita on September 17, 1927 to Trinidad and Idalia Madrid.  The family eventually moved to Deming where Nelo attended Deming Public Schools.  He completed the 8th grade and worked odd jobs until the age of 17 yrs.  He enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served honorably during WW II in the South Pacific and Asia.  When he returned home he met the love of his life, Florence Uzueta.  They were married on October 7, 1950.  Their union was blessed with three children, Cornelio Jr., Frank and Sylvia.  Nelo relocated his family to California, East Los Angeles, where he raised his two children.   

Throughout Nelo's life he served unparalleled kindness, love, impartiality and hospitality.  He was an excellent father.  His love for God, family and friends will live on forever in our hearts.  His laughter will always be with us. 

Nelo is survived by one sibling Rachel Piñeda of El Paso, TX.; his two children, Frank Madrid, Sylvia Madrid-Henriquez and spouse Juan.  Preceded in death by parents, Trinidad and Idalia Madrid; son, Cornelio Madrid Jr.; wife, Florence Madrid; 3 brothers, Raymond, Trinidad and Nacho Madrid; sister, Dora Madrid Watson; great grandson, Isaiah Madrid. 

Dad you have run the race, you fought the good fight, now the crown awaits you . . . Ephesians 6:1-4 "Children obey your parents in the lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother" - which is the first commandment with a promise - "That it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth". " Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord".

Maria Dolores “Dodo” Camacho, 75, a resident of Deming, NM entered eternal rest on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at Good Samaritan Society – Las Cruces Village. Maria was born on May 5, 1942 in Gold Road, AZ.

She is survived by her loving husband, Raynaldo Camacho Jr.; one son, Victor Ray Camacho of Deming, NM; two daughters, Reyes Marie Camacho and her companion Tereza Hughes of Pima, AZ and Priscilla Camacho of Deming, NM; three brothers, Billy Garcia of Tucson, AZ; David Garcia of Germany and Patrick Garcia of El Paso, TX; three sisters, Teresa Stewart of Lordsburg, NM; Josephine Estrada of Alamogordo, NM and Christina Gomez of Silver City, NM; two grandchildren, Kassaday Camacho and Rita Antonia Camacho; one great granddaughter, Reina Marie Camacho-Nickerson.

She is preceded in death by her father, Victoriano P. Garcia and one brother, Robert Garcia. Visitation will be on Saturday, March 24, 2018 from 8:30-9:30am at Terrazas Funeral Chapels. Holy rosary will then begin at 9:30am with Susan Lundy officiating. Funeral mass will then follow at 10:45am at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father, Ron Machado officiating.

​Cremation will then take place at Terrazas Crematory. Serving as pallbearers are Patrick Garcia, Anthony Garcia, Frank Garcia, Paul Estrada, Tommy Gomez and J.P Camacho. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that you make a donation to your favorite charity in Maria’s name. Arrangements are with Terrazas Funeral Chapels & Crematory ​

Terrence K. Pekron

Terrence K. Pekron, age 76 and 11 months, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2018 with his family by his side.
 
Terry was born on April 15, 1941 to Alphonse and Clara (Block) Pekron in Chicago, Illinois. At age 4, his family moved to Waubay, South Dakota where his parents ran Pekron's Waubay Cafe later in life. Terry graduated from Waubay High School in 1958. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy six months later at the age of 17 and completed his basic training in San Diego after which he served first on the U.S.S. Wasp and later he had the privilege of serving as a member of the commissioning crew on the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk CVS-63. He was a member of the Kitty Hawk Veterans Association and a plankholder. After being honorably discharged in 1962 from the U.S. Navy, Terry returned to South Dakota and began his college career at Northern State College. In June, 1963, he married Barbara Cowie. In August, 1966, Terry graduated from Northern State College in Aberdeen, South Dakota with a degree in Social Studies Education. In May, 1964, their son, Scott, was born in Aberdeen, SD. Having enjoyed the southwest and its warmth
while in basic training in San Diego, Terry applied for and accepted a teaching job at Deming High School in 1966.
 
With wife and their toddler son in tow, they settled in Deming where they have made home since. In December, 1967, their second son, Sean, was born and in 1968 while teaching, he obtained his Masters of Education from Western New Mexico University in Silver City, NM.

Terry retired from Deming Public Schools in 1992 after 26 years of service. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, traveling with them to historical sites in 49 of the 50 states and visiting with family in various parts of the country. Terry also enjoyed reading, hunting, music, and the southwest. Terry is survived by his wife Barbara of the home; son Sean and wife Gwynne, grandchildren Kensley, Kellen, Kerris, and Kemper of Woodland Park, Colorado; grandson Tristan Pekron of Deming; granddaughter Hali Duran and husband Gabriel,
great-grandson River Duran of Deming; sisters Betty Pheifer of Owatonna, Minnesota, and Judy (Bill) Ackerman of Mesa, Arizona; brother-in-law Keith Cowie and wife Kathy Quinn of Cheyenne, WY; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alphonse and Clara (Block) Pekron; son, Scott Pekron; and nephew, Tim Oakley.
 
The family would like to invite you to attend a celebration of his life at a come-and-go reception on Saturday, March 24, 2018 from 1:30pm-3:30pm at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Deming. The cause closest to his heart was the local cancer support and, in his memory, he would like any memorials made in memory of his son, Scott. Bobby M. DeKruijff, 77, Deming resident passed away Wednesday March 14, 2018 at his home.
 
Visitation will be Sunday March 18, 2018 beginning at 3 o’clock at Baca’s Funeral Chapel with a rosary to follow at 5 o’clock to be led by Maria Lozano.  Mass of the Christian Burial will take place Monday March 19, 2018 at Holy Family Catholic Church at 11 o’clock.  Concluding services and interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.  Father Ronald Machado will officiate.
 
Bobby was born March 14, 1941 to Johanna Maria de Lange and Gijsbertus Gerrit DeKruijff in Rotterdam, Netherlands.  He served in the Air Force as a Captain for the Netherlands and moved to Deming in 1995 coming from Germany.  Bobby was a communicant of the Catholic Church.
 
He is survived by his wife, Margarita DeKruijff of the home; 2 sons, Sergio and Ricky DeKruijff of Deming.

LANA K. HASSMAN

Lana K. Offutt Hassman, age 67, lifelong resident of Deming, NM, entered eternal life in Heaven, on Thursday, February 8, 2018, joining God and loved ones awaiting her. Lana was a genuine, loving, caring person. She was a beautiful mother, sister, daughter and a friend to all who knew and loved her.  
 
Lana was born on May 3, 1950 in Deming, NM to parents, Ira Joe Offutt and Louella Chandler Offutt. Lana graduated from Deming High School in 1968 and then acquired her BA Degree in Elementary Education, an MA Degree in English and a Specialty Degree in History from Western New Mexico University.  Lana’s career began in 1972, teaching third grade students for 18 years and then mid high and high school students for the remainder of her 36 years as a teacher. In Lana’s own words, “Every student I taught had a special, beautiful, brilliant knowledge within them.  I am and always will be thankful for the honor and privilege of associating with and teaching each student I was blessed with.”
 
Lana loved teaching, studying the word of God, swimming, movies, walking, dancing, and especially loved horseback riding in her youth with her grandfather, Harvey Chandler.  Lana was a Champion of Hope Partner member of Joel Osteen Ministries Lakewood Church for the past fifteen years. Lana and her daughter Kay Kay were the best of friends and shared great joy in life, no matter the occasion, grand or small.  Lana loved and cherished each and every one of her family members.  Faith, Hope, Love and Laughter were important values in life to Lana.
 
Lana was preceded in death by her parents, Ira Joe Offutt and Louella Chandler Offutt, her sister JoElla Treadwell, her nephew Shad Moore, and recently her loyal 18-year-old Chow dog, Cha Cha.
 
Lana is survived by her beloved daughter, Kay Hassman, her sisters, Harvielee Moore (Samuel), Jeanie Coppedge (Bill), Linda Smrkovsky (Bobby), and her nieces and nephews, Brent Moore, Charlene Bickerdike (Jimmy), Jeanie Lynn Lawson (Jason), Rusty Smrkovsky, Crystal Coppedge (Bill Adcock), Ryan Smrkovsky (Angela), Jessica Ballard (Devin), and her great nieces and nephews Megan Guaderrama (Erik), Zach Moore (Vanessa Snyder), Jayme Lynn Lawson, Rowdy Smrkovsky, Chandler, Lillian, and Mallory Smrkovsky, Pecos and Porter Ballard, Basil Adcock, and her great-great nephews, Evan and Maddox Guaderrama, Blake and Bryce Moore.
 
On Lana’s behalf, her family thanks Euromed, Dr. M Basel Aswad, Yvonne Mouchette of TLC Medical Clinic, Mimbres Memorial Hospital, and Ambercare Hospice.
 
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Marshall Memorial Library (a children’s book), Deming Luna County Humane Society, or to the charity of your choice.
 
Memorial Service at Baca’s Funeral Chapels, 811 S. Gold, Deming, NM 88030 Saturday March 17, 2018 at 11 o’clock. Pastor Cesar Chavez will officiate. Cremation has been entrusted to Baca’s Mimbres Crematory.

Seferina C. Marrufo

Seferina C. Marrufo, 88, longtime Deming resident passed away Saturday morning March 10, 2018 surrounded by her family.  

Rosary will be recited Wednesday March 14, 2018 at 10:30 AM at Saint Ann’s Catholic Church led by Guillermina Macias. Mass of the Christian Burial will follow at 11 o’clock.  Concluding services and interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Father Manuel F. Ibarra will officiate. 

Seferina was born September 4, 1929 to Maria (Castro) and Jose Cano in Nonoava, Chihuahua, Mexico.  She was a communicant of Saint Ann’s Catholic Church and a member of the Sacred Heart League.  Her church was a very important part of her life, she was a very active member. Seferina loved her family and also enjoyed to crochet.  

She is survived by her 3 children, Joe Marrufo and wife Marisela of Tucson, AZ, Dora Madrid and husband Ernest and Carmen Bencomo and husband Rumaldo both of Deming; brother, Roberto Cano of Cuahtemoc, Chihuahua  MX; 3 sisters, Socorro Elena, Hortencia and Estela Cano all of the Cuahtemoc , Chihuahua MX; 7 grandchildren, Erika (Tommy) Cardenas, Katanya (Brian) Goodheart, Ernest Valdespino, Julie Valdespino (Daniel Gutierrez), Marisela Valdespino, Ariana (Jacob) Mendoza, Erik Bencomo (Lupita Duran); 12 great-grandchildren, Kealani Goodheart, Amaya, Nina and Cheyenne Valdespino, Gabriela Nieto, Sierra Valdespino, Jacob(Bobo), Kaleb and Jacqlynn Mendoza, Erikito, Angel and Edlynn Bencomo. 
 
Preceded in death by her husband, Jacinto Marrufo; parents, Jose and Maria Cano; brothers, Raul, Rafael, Ricardo, Ruben & Rodolfo Cano; twin babies Bencomo.  

Serving as pallbearers are Ernie Valdespino, Rumaldo Bencomo, Erik Bencomo, Jacob Mendoza, Jacob Mendoza (Bobo) and Tommy Cardenas.   Honorary pallbearers are Ernesto Madrid, Carlos Vasquez, Steven Nieto, Kaleb Mendoza, Erikito and Angel Bencomo, Daniel Gutierrez and Brian Goodheart.

MARY RUIZ MYRICK, 100, passed away Thursday March 8, 2018 at the New Mexico Veterans Center in Truth or Consequences.
 
Visitation was Tuesday evening, March 13, 2018 from 4 to 6 at Baca’s Funeral Chapel.  A prayer vigil will take place at 6 o’clock Wednesday March 14, 2018 also at Baca’s Funeral Chapel to be led by Suzanne Lundy.   Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday March 15, 2018 at 11 o’clock at Holy Family Catholic Church with Fr. Ron Machado officiating.  Cremation will follow and inurnment will take place Friday March 16, 2018 at 10 o’clock at Mountain View Cemetery. 
 
Mary was born October 2, 1917 in Sasabe, Arizona to Ramon and Teresa (Ochoa) Ruiz.  She has been a resident of Deming since 2000 having previously lived in Angleton, Texas.  She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
 
She is survived by her children, Alejandro Mendoza of Chesapeake, MD, Lorenzo Mendoza of Angleton, TX,  Amalia Patterson (Tony) of Washington, PA, Octavio Mendoza (Leonora Nenita) of Deming, Benjamin Mendoza (Mary) of Tucson, AZ, Theresa Pearl Shefstad (Darrel) of Marysville, WA, Jerry Myrick of Washington, DC, Jesse Glenn Myrick (Kimberly) Tucson, AZ, John Myrick (Teresa) of Kingsville, TX, Benjamin Mendoza III (Constance) of Angleton, TX, Raymond Myrick of Angleton, TX, 17 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren.
 
Pallbearers will be John, Jesse, Ben, and Raymond Myrick, and Larry and Octavio Mendoza.

Ernesto Renteria Porras Sr., 75, a resident of Deming, NM entered eternal rest on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at his residence. Ernesto was born on May 16, 1942 in Ascension, Chihuahua, Mexico to Jesus Porras and Maria Renteria. He is survived by three sons, Ernesto Porras Jr. of Phoenix, AZ; Luis Carlos Porras and his wife Vanessa of Phoenix, AZ and Juan Porras and his wife Claudia of Phoenix, AZ; three daughters, Guadalupe Lopez of Phoenix, AZ; Cecilia Porras of Phoenix, AZ and Michelle Porras of Dallas, TX; two brothers, Miguel Porras of Las Cruces, NM and Hector Porras of Juarez, Mex.; four sisters, Elisa Porras of Deming, NM; Elpidia Porras of Deming, NM; Bertha Porras of Alamogordo, NM and Guadalupe Porras of Alamogordo, NM; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by both of his parents. Visitation will be on Monday, March 12, 2018 from 10-11am with the funeral service beginning at 11am with Father, Ron Machado officiating at Terrazas Funeral Chapels. Cremation will then take place at Terrazas Crematory. Soraima Garcia, 32, a resident of Deming, NM entered eternal rest on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at her residence with her family by her side. Soraima was born on February 13, 1986 in Deming, NM to Efren Carreon Sr. and Socorro (Garcia) Anchondo.

She is survived by her mother; three sons, Arnoldo Marquez of Deming, NM; Jonathan Omar Perez of Tulsa, OK and Jose Arturo Perez of Deming, NM; one daughter, Danytza Yamile Perez of Deming, NM; two brothers, Eric Carreon and his wife Laura Ramos of Farmington, NM and Esteban Carreon of Las Cruces, NM; one sister, Mayra L. Del Hierro and her husband Victor M. of Phoenix, AZ; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her father and one brother, Efren Carreon Jr. 

Visitation will be on Monday, March 12, 2018 from 5-6pm with the holy rosary beginning at 6pm with Carmen Terrazas officiating at Terrazas Funeral Chapels. Funeral mass will be on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at 12 noon at St. Ann Catholic Church with Father, Manuel Ibarra officiating. Concluding services with an interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery. 

​Serving as pallbearers are Eric Carreon, Arnoldo Marquez, Octavio Carreon, Victor Manuel Del Hierro, Fernando Garcia, Ruben Ramirez, Frankie Lucero Jr. And Omar Carreon. Arrangements are with Terrazas Funeral Chapels ​

Jackie R (Wheeler) Matthews

Jackie R (Wheeler) Matthews 74, passed away Thursday, March 1, 2018 after a short illness. 

Jackie and her mother Marie arrived in Deming in 1947.  Jackie attended Deming schools and was the first class to graduate from the “new” now old Deming High School.   Jackie earned a Bachelor of Education from Phillips University, in Enid Oklahoma in1966, Master of Music Education, Wichita State University, 1973.

Jackie loved music, and directed choral music programs in Kansas, Colorado and Texas. She was active in multiple community musical programs.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Marie E Cook of Deming.  She is survived by her husband, Dr. Charles F Matthews of El Paso, Texas.

Per Jackie’s wishes no services will be held.  Jackie loved cats and all animals and asked that In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Luna County’s no kill shelter:
