Victor Montes

The world just lost a wonderful man! Victor passed away at home Friday January 25, 2019 surrounded by his loving family.

Visitation will be Thursday January 31, 2019 at 10 o’clock in the morning at Baca’s Funeral Chapel in Deming with recitation of the rosary to follow at 11 o’clock. Concluding service and interment will take place at Mountain View Cemetery. Suzanne Lundy will officiate.

Victor was born February 23, 1954 to Elda Barajas and Edmundo Montes in El Paso, Texas. He worked at El Paso Natural Gas Company for 20 years. He then went to work for El Paso County where he was over county communications until his retirement. Victor and Billie loved to travel and got to see many places in the U.S. and Mexico.

Survived by his loving wife, Billie; son, Victor Jr. (Veronica); mother, Elda Montes; sister, Lindy Herrera (Vic); brothers, Edmundo (Sonny) Montes (Rowena), Rogie (Irma) Montes; 2 granddaughters, Alessandra & Isabella; mother-in-law, Dolores Eddleman; caregiver, Maribel Ghahemani; numerous nephews and nieces. Victor was preceded in death by his father, Edmundo Montes.
Pallbearers will be Victor Montes Jr., Rogie Montes, Sonny Montes, Victor Herrera, Nicky Herrera and Rudy Luna.

Lucy Preso June 9, 1937 – January 19, 2019

A longtime resident of Deming passed away January 19, 2019 at Willow Manor Assisted Living in Deming.

Born to Umberto Preso and Santina Pontesilli on June 9, 1937.  Lucy was the youngest of 6 children.  When her oldest sister, Mary Tharp, married and left home Lucy went to live with and be raised by Mary and her husband, Doug.

Lucy graduated from Deming schools in 1955.  She attended Western University in Silver City for her teaching degree.   She then moved to California and began her teaching career.  Upon her retirement from California schools she returned to Deming and took a 3rd grade teaching position at Smith School.

Lucy was an avid Bridge player as well as consumed with books.   She always incorporated her love for reading in her teaching and encouraged her students to read as much and often as possible.  

Lucy is survived by a brother Joe Preso of Oregon, and her niece, Connie Tharp and family, of California.  In lieu of flowers or gifts please send donations to Deming Humane Society in honor of Lucy’s love for animals. 

Thank you from the bottom of our heart goes to the Caregivers and Staff at Willow Manor Assisted Living for the love and support they gave Lucy during her time there. 

A graveside service will be held Friday, January 25, 2019 at 2 o’clock at Mountain View Cemetery. Deacon Dan Peña will officiate.  Cremation has been entrusted to Baca’s Mimbres Crematory.

Laura Ivon Castañeda Barrera

Laura Ivon Castañeda Barrera, of Deming, NM, went home to be with Jesus on January 12, 2019 surrounded by her family. She was 37.

Laura was born in Houston, TX, on September 7, 1981 to Jose de Jesus Castañeda and Juana Ibarra del Toro. She was a beloved wife to Luis Barrera (of Deming, NM); a loving sister to Jesus Castañeda, Jazmin Castañeda, and Victor Hugo Castañeda; and an adoring aunt to Nicole Castañeda, Laura Sophia Morales and Gabriela and Yeraldi Castañeda all of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua.

Laura and Luis married on April 1, 2006 in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. Laughter was always at the center of their twelve-year marriage and her laugh would always bring so much joy to the many people she encountered. She was also passionate about cooking for her family. Luis knew when she got in front of a stove something amazing was about to happen.

She loved God passionately. She sang to him from deep in her soul every time she took the stage as the Worship Leader at CitiLife Church. Laura was a committed member of the Praise and Worship team for eleven years. Nothing brought Laura greater joy than singing to her God and ministering to people through her voice.

A celebration of Laura’s life will be held on Saturday, January 19 at 10:30 a.m. at CitiLife Church, 1200 Pear St. SE, with Pastor César F. Chávez officiating. Arrangements are with Terrazas Funeral Chapels & Crematory.

JOHN PAUL PELAYO, 70, resident of Deming passed away at his home Tuesday January 15, 2019.

A memorial service will be this Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 2 o’clock in the afternoon at Baca’s Funeral Chapel with Justin Pelayo officiating.  As was his request, cremation has taken place.

John was born April 17, 1948 in Deming to Lee and Thelma Pelayo.  John’s career began as a Border Patrol agent stationed in Eagle Pass, Texas.  His father took ill and John moved back to Deming to return to the farm.  Soon after he had left his own mark on the farming community.  After years at farming he returned to school in Las Cruces to begin a new career as a Wastewater Treatment Plant operator for the City of Las Cruces and ultimately retired as the Special Projects Coordinator.  Soon after he returned home to Deming.

He is survived by his mother, Thelma Pelayo; his sister Lona and his brother Ron; children, Justin (Traci), Cole (Eric Hartman), Patrick, Harley (Derek Cirko), Bethany (Robert Bak); grandchildren, Noah, Audrey, Jacob and Emily.

Not only did he sew the seeds to many crops, he sewed the seeds to a family legacy to come.

Thomas A. “Tom” Stanley, 53, a resident of Deming, NM entered eternal rest on Monday, January 14, 2019 at Mimbres Memorial Hospital. Tom was born on May 20, 1965 in Edwards Air Force base, California to Charles Frank Stanley and Karen Barekman.

Tom is survived by his mother; his loving wife of 24yrs, Monica Stanley; one son, Joshua Stanley and his fiancé Shanleigh of Minnesota; two daughters, Amanda Biddle and her husband Brian of Michigan and Faith Stanley of Deming; one brother, Tim Stanley and his wife Katie of Georgia; two sisters, Donna Mowrer and her husband Jesse of New Mexico and Charleen Hynes and her husband Paul of Florida; and two grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his father.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 from 5-6pm at Terrazas Funeral Chapels. Cremation will then take place at Terrazas Crematory. Arrangements are with Terrazas Funeral Chapels & Crematory

Elvira R. Sanchez, 86, longtime Deming resident passed away peacefully Friday January 11, 2019 at her home surrounded by her family.

Rosary will be recited Thursday January 17, 2019 at 6 o’clock in the evening at Baca’s Funeral Chapel led by Christine B. Milo. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday January 18, 2019 at 10 o’clock in the morning at Saint Ann’s Catholic Church with Father Jude Okonkwo officiating. Concluding services and interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

Elvira was born November 10, 1932 to Dolores Aguilera and Faustino Rodriguez in Columbus. She was a homemaker and a communicant of Saint Ann’s Catholic Church. Elvira will be remembered for her love to cook, having worked for local restaurants all of her life, enjoyed gardening, the outdoors and was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs. She loved being with her family, was a great sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her children, Arturo Valtierra and wife, Martha, David Valtierra and wife Sylvia, Barbara Olivas and husband Ricardo Romo, Alex Sanchez all of Deming; siblings, Andres Rodriguez, Manny Rodriguez and Mary Ruiz; 10 grandchildren, Michael, Monica and TJ Valtierra, Jesus “Chu-Chee” Sanchez, Eric, Rachel and Julian Olivas, Alex Sanchez Jr., Claudia Vasquez Chavez and Elise Sanchez; 18 great-grandchildren.

Elvira was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Juan Valtierra and Jesus Sanchez.

Serving as pallbearers will be Julian Olivas, Alex Sanchez Jr., Michael Valtierra, T.J. Valtierra, Eric Olivas and Jesus “Chu-Chee” Sanchez.

Victor Javier Mendez Carrazco

Victor Javier Mendez Carrazco, 45, Deming resident passed away Thursday January 3, 2019 at his home.

Visitation was Saturday January 5, 2019 at 4 o’clock at Baca’s Funeral Chapel with a rosary that followed at 6 PM led by Irma Jaurequi. Cremation was entrusted to Baca’s Mimbres Crematory.

Victor was born June 22, 1973 to Candida Mendez and Mario Ruiz Sr. in Casa Grande, Arizona. He lived most of his life in Deming coming from Arizona and Utah. Victor was very intelligent, he loved computers, was the go-to person for just about anything, known for his mechanic talents and activeness. He will be remembered for his caring ways, he shared almost anything with everyone, he had a huge heart and was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He is survived by his mother, Candida Ruiz of the home, 4 sons, Mark Anthony Valenzuela of Deming, Victor Javier Carrazco Jr. of Hawaii, Anthony and Angel Carrazco of Utah; 4 daughters, Merissa Knopic and husband George of Las Cruces, Victoria Smith and husband Vince of Utah, Yuniba Marie and Iyanni Candida Carrazco both of Deming; 3 brothers, Abel Carrazco of Deming, Rafael Carrazco of Utah and Mario Ruiz Jr. of Deming; 3 sisters, Maria Isabel Hernandez of Arizona, Angelica Ruiz and Marie Idalia Ruiz both of Deming; 5 grandchildren.

Victor was preceded in death by his father, Mario Ruiz in 2006 and wife, Andrea Hayes Carrazco in 2015.
