Guadalupe Ochoa Acosta

​Guadalupe Ochoa Acosta, 90, passed away Monday November 28, 2016 at her home. 
 
Visitation will be today, Thursday December 1, 2016, from 2 o'clock until 5 at Baca’s Funeral Chapel and the prayer vigil at 6 PM at Saint Ann’s Catholic Church.  Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10 o’clock Friday morning at Saint Ann’s Catholic Church with Fr. Manuel F. Ibarra officiating. Concluding services and interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her husband.
 
Guadalupe was born February 21, 1926 to Maria Guadalupe and Simon Ochoa in Smeltertown, New Mexico.  She married Alfredo Acosta November 27, 1949 in La Mesa and had been a Deming resident since 1951 coming from Anthony where they established farming in the Lewis Flats area.  She was a homemaker and was respected for her asadero cheese.  “Lupe” as she was affectionately known was a communicant of Saint Ann’s Catholic Church. 
 
She is survived by 2 sons, Alfredo Jr. and Manuel Acosta both of Deming; 3 daughters, Mary Salazar of Albuquerque, Martha and Sylvia Valtierra both of Deming; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
 
Preceded in death by parents, Simon and Maria Guadalupe Ochoa; husband, Alfredo Acosta and a brother.  
 
Serving as pallbearers are Mikie Valtierra, Armando Acosta, Manuel Acosta Jr., T.J. Valtierra and Alfredo Acosta III.
 
Honorary pallbearers will be Naomi Salazar, Monica Caldillo, Cristina Acosta, Sonia Salazar, Claudia Vasquez, Karima Acosta, Teresa Montellano and Patricia Bolanos.

Pauline Anne "Polly" Gunter

​PAULINE ANNE "POLLY" GUNTER, 75, Deming resident passed away Friday November 25, 2016 at her home.
 
Visitation will begin Wednesday afternoon November 30, 2016 at 2 o'clock at the First United Methodist Church with the funeral service to follow at 2:30 with Rev. Ernie Vineyard officiating. Concluding services and interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
 
Polly was born May 16, 1941 in Deming to Charlotte Elizabeth Clark and Lewis Rip Russell. She was a hard working ranch wife who loved to cook, bake, work in the yard and crochet. Polly loved her turtles and looked forward to her trips to Laughlin, Nevada with her brother and sisters. She had been happily married for 51 years when her husband Roy passed away on August 3, 2015.
 
Survivors include her son, Thomas Gunter and wife Shawna of Deming; 2 daughters, Dianna Peterson and husband Wesley, Sandi Gunter all of Deming; brother, Jimmy Russell of Deming; 2 sisters, Kay Hull, Frances Russell both of Deming and 8 grandchildren.
 
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Charlotte Russell and her husband Roy.
 
Pallbearers will be Wesley Peterson, Dustin Gunter, Dylan Gunter, Joe Pinon, James Deed Russell and Gearen Hale.
 
The family request that memorial contributions be made to Luna County Cancer Support or Luna County 4-H Club.

Clara Schultz

​Clara Schultz, 86, of Deming, died peacefully at home on Thursday, November 24, 2016, surrounded by her family.
 
Clara was born on February 13, 1930, in Eldorado, Oklahoma, to Edith and Buford Humphers. The family moved to Amarillo, Texas when Clara was three years old. She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1948. After she graduated, the family moved to Deming where they owned the Monterey Court.
 
Clara married Walter Schultz on July 17, 1949, in Amarillo, Texas, at the Line Avenue Baptist Church. They moved to Deming where they have lived for the past 67 years. Clara was a member of the First Baptist Church of Deming. Her church was a very important part of her life and she, Walter, and their four children were very active members. Her first job was secretary of the church. Over the years she held several different jobs, including time at Mountain Bell, as Deputy County Clerk, and as the bookkeeper for Walter Schultz Heating and Cooling.
 
She enjoyed playing the piano, cooking, quilting and crafting, and spending time with her family, her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and her many friends.
 
Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Walter; son Larry Schultz and wife Carol of Deming; daughter Lynnette Harris and husband Robert of Washington, DC; daughter Nancy Patterson and husband Richard of Deming; daughter Cindy Solis and husband Aries of Las Cruces; nine grandchildren – Michael, Melissa, and Matthew Schultz; Christopher, Laura and Jack Harris (Kira); Amanda Connor (Derek); Kelsey and Zach Baker (Erin); and two great grandchildren – James and Ava Connor.
 
Services will be held at Deming First Baptist Church, 206 West Pine, on Wednesday, November, 30, at 10 am. Concluding Services and Interment will follow at Mt. View Cemetery.
 
The family would like to say a very special thank you to John Lavertu, Dan Moore, Bertha Calderon and Art Gutierrez of Amerbercare and to Dr. Clark, Karen DeGenevieve and Mike of New Mexico Cancer Center.

Ruben Martinez Ramirez

​Ruben Martinez Ramirez, 71, Deming resident passed away Saturday, November 5, 2016 at Sunshine Haven Nursing Home in Lordsburg.
 
Visitation will be Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at 2 o’clock in the afternoon at Baca’s Funeral Chapel with a rosary to follow at 5 o’clock.  Concluding services and interment will take place in Guanajuato, Mexico. 
 
Ruben was born October 1, 1945 to Lucia Ramirez and Ignacio Martinez in Irapuato, Guanajuato, Mexico.  He moved to Deming in 1974 coming from Mexico.  He was a communicant of the Catholic Church. 
 
He is survived by son, Christopher Martinez, 2 daughters, Ambar Denisse and Victoria Lucia Martinez, brother, Sabino Martinez and 4 sisters, Teresa, Obdulia, Anita Martinez and Juana Vazquez.  He was preceded in death by parents and son, Jose Andres Martinez in 2009.

John Edwards Maynes

The man. The myth. The Legend. John Edward Maynes, 65, went to be with our Lord on October 30, 2016.

John was born on January 14, 1951 in Santa Clara, CA to Arthur Maynes and Lupe Villa. He is survived by his loving wife Nancy of Tucson, AZ; Mother Lupe Saenz of Deming, NM; Two daughters,  Heather and husband Alex Tapia of Tucson, AZ; Daughter Cynthia Maynes of Yucaipa, CA; Five sons, John Maynes Jr and wife Marcy of Yucaipa, CA; Richard Maynes of Riverside, CA; Cameron Maynes and wife Kristen of Bullhead city, AZ; Arthur Maynes of Tucson, AZ; Matthew Maynes and wife Lauren of Tucson, AZ; Four brothers, Frank maynes and wife Nannette of Tucson, AZ; Alfred Maynes and wife Joanne of Tucson, AZ; Jim Maynes and wife Vivian of Los Angeles, CA; Tony Maynes and wife Martha of Phoenix, AZ; And numerous nieces and nephews. He is returning to his father, Arturo; two brothers, Mike and Gilbert; one sister, Sylvia; wife, Diana; Great friend, Richard aka "Pichardo" Gonzales.

When most Americans were trying to dodge the Vietnam War, Johnny was enlisting as a Marine Corps Scout Sniper where he earned many Awards and Medals. Johnny was a man of honor, a beloved father, brother, son, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He served his country with honor and made his family proud. His son, Richard followed his footsteps and joined the military to be just like his hero. Johnny enjoyed nothing more than celebrating life each and every day with his family. There are countless stories and memories of Johnny that will live on in our hearts forever.  You could say he was the most interesting man in the world! What we will miss most about him are his famous quotes that always made you laugh. "I accept this award!" "Hi I'm Johnny Maynes" and never call him grandpa in front of chicks! His memory will live on forever and as Johnny would say, " Stay thirsty my friends."

Cheers to a life well lived! 
Visitation will be on Thursday, November 10, 2016 from 4-6pm at Terrazas Funeral Chapels with the holy rosary beginning at 6pm with Eugene Munoz officiating.

Funeral mass will be on Friday, November 11, 2016 at 10am at St. Ann Catholic Church with Father, Arthur Francis MacDonald officiating and Deacon, Bill Holguin. Concluding services with an interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery with full military honors.

Serving as pallbearers are John Maynes Jr., Matthew Maynes, Richard Maynes, Cameron Maynes, Arthur Maynes, Frank Maynes, Alex Tapia and James Jim Maynes.

Honorary pallbearers are Eugene Munoz, Alfred Maynes and Tony Maynes.

Beatrice S. Everett, 59, a resident of Deming, NM entered eternal rest on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at Mimbres Memorial Hospital.

Beatrice was born on December 8, 1956 to Faustino Edralin and Rosalba Labrada in Calexico, CA. She is survived by her biological mother, Rosalba Labrada; her mother that actually raised her,  Marea Edralin; her husband, Jeff Everett of Deming, NM; one son, William Cunningham of Deming, NM; one daughter, Summer Enslow  and her five grandchildren of California; three brothers, Thomas Edralin of California; Richard Edralin and his wife Esperanza of California and Bobby Edralin of Hawaii; five sisters, Ana Vandergroen of Rhode Island; Esperanza Edralin of California; Darlene Olivarez of California; Vickie Edralin of California and Mariana Edralin of California; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Today, Friday, November 4, 2016 from 3-4pm at Terrazas Funeral Chapels.

Funeral service will then begin at 4pm with Luis Barrera of CitiLife Church officiating.

Cremation will then take place at Terrazas Crematory.

Lieutenant Richard Allen Cowles

​LIEUTENANT RICHARD ALLEN COWLES, 51, Deming resident passed away Saturday October 22, 2016. A son, brother, father, uncle and friend to many.
 
The Memorial service will be held  Friday morning October 28, 2016 at 10 o'clock at Luna County Courthouse Park, 700 S. Silver Ave. with Pastor Cesar Chavez of the River of Life Citi-Church officiating.
 
Richard was born January 14, 1965 in Cleveland, Ohio, to Jeanette Wohlgemuth and Leonard Cowles. Richard was a Deming resident since May 1977, having coming from Cleveland. Richard graduated from Deming High School as a scholar and athlete. He was an avid softball player, bowler and outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and, especially, time spent with his daughter, Arianna.  He attended the River of Life Citi-Church. Richard joined the law enforcement profession in 1998. In his 18 years, he rose through the ranks from a deputy, then sergeant and, finally, to Lieutenant at the Luna County Sheriff's Department. He also served as jail administrator and dispatch director. During his time with the Sheriff's department he was a part of the SWAT/Sniper team. Richard was the driving force behind the Shop with a Cop Program, carrying on in the footsteps of his mother, Jenny, after she started the program over 25 years ago.  Lieutenant Cowles took the time to know the community in which he took tremendous pride. 
 
Survivors include: his daughter, Arianna Cowles-Reyes of Deming; mother, Jenny and father, Len  Cowles of Deming; and his two brothers, Lenny Cowles and his wife Nanci of Phoenix, Arizona and  Curt Cowles (Shannon Emblin) of Scottsdale, Arizona; nephews, Ryan Cowles, Orlando Salaiz, Aaron Salaiz; nieces, Hailee and Kennedi Cowles. Richard considered his closest friends his brothers and sisters.
 
In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made in his honor to Luna County Shop with a Cop by contacting the Luna County Sheriff's Department.
