Mabel A. Uzueta

Mabel A. Uzueta, 85, passed away Thursday October 24, 2019 at San Juan Regional Hospital in Farmington, NM.
 
Visitation will be Monday November 4, 2019 at 9 o’clock in the morning at Baca’s Funeral Chapel. Recitation of the holy rosary will follow at 10 o’clock with Deacon Bill Holguin officiating. Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 AM at Saint Ann’s Catholic Church with the rite of committal and inurnment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery where she will be reunited with her husband Richard P. Uzueta. Fr. Casmir Anozie will officiate.
 
Mabel was born April 16, 1934 to Gertrude Garcia and Eusebio Aragon in Monticello, NM. She married Richard Uzueta on September 3, 1954 in Deming and together raised five children.  She dedicated herself to her family, helped run the family bakery (Deming Pastry) and was a devoted member of the Apostolado at Saint Ann’s Catholic Church. She had a special love for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Always made the time to share her laughter, joy and love with her family.
 
She is survived by her children, Eva Mendez and her husband Joe of Los Angeles, CA, Tim Uzueta and his wife Cheryl of Reserve, Tricia Matthews and her husband Don of Deming; daughter-in-law, Sandra Uzueta of Deming; brother, Maurice Aragon of Silver City; sister, Mary Granado of Deming; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.  Preceded in death by her parents, Eusebio and Gertrude Aragon; husband, Richard P. Uzueta; sons, David and Rick Uzueta.
 
Honorary pallbearers are her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Miguel O. Aranda

MIGUEL O. ARANDA, 92, former resident of Deming passed away Tuesday October 8, 2019 at Banner University Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona.
     Visitation will be Friday evening, October 25, 2019 from 4 to 8 at Baca’s Funeral Chapel.  Funeral services will be Saturday October 26, 2019 beginning with a rosary at 10 o’clock at St. Ann Catholic Church.  Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 o’clock with Fr. Manuel F. Ibarra, Pastor officiating.  Concluding services and interment will follow at Mt. View Cemetery with military honors accorded.
     Miguel was born May 8, 1927 in Deming to Sixto and Josefa (Ordonez) Aranda.  He entered the U.S. Navy in 1944 which began a dedicated career in serving his country.  After his enlistment in the Navy Miguel reenlisted in the U. S. Army and eventually transferred to the United States Air Force from which he officially retired February 1, 1966.  His career took him into WWII, The Korean Conflict and The Vietnam War.  Staff Sergeant Miguel O. Aranda was very proud of his country and honored to serve.  He enjoyed his retirement and loved being with his family.  He lived in Deming until 2011 when he and his wife Annie moved to Tucson.  Locally Miguel was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church.
     He is survived by his children, Linda Jaime of Las Cruces, Patsy Aranda (Jennifer Beebe) of North Lake, TX, Mike Aranda, Richard Aranda, David Aranda (Cindy Molina), Joseph Aranda (Jennie) all of Tucson, AZ, Julian Aranda of Phoenix, AZ; 12 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.  Miguel was preceded in death by his wife Annie B. Aranda and daughter Debra Salas.
     Pallbearers will be Richard Aranda Jr., David Aranda Jr., Izaiah Aranda, Tommy Mora, Travis Self, and Rosie Rodriguez.

John William Griner

John William Griner, 58, Deming resident passed away Thursday October 3, 2019 at his home.

A Memorial Service will take place Friday October 11, 2019 at the American Legion.  A bike run will take place at 11 o’clock and concluding with a gathering of friends and family back at the American Legion. Cremation has been entrusted to Baca's Mimbres Crematory.

John was born May 7, 1961 to Gail Archibell and Earl Griner in Macon, Georgia.  John and his wife Betsy moved to Deming over a year and a half ago coming from Georgia.  John served his country honorably in the US Marine Corp and was a member of the American Legion locally. 

He is survived by his wife, Beatrice “Betsy” Bunce of the home; parents, Earl and Gail Griner of Roswell, GA; sons, Jackson Alexander Griner of Macon, GA; Ryan Atchison Bunce of Lakewood, CO; and sister, Shari Holskjaer and her husband Lars of London, England.

Hazel A. Town (Fessenden)

Hazel A. Town (Fessenden), age 71, joined her Lord and Savior in heaven on Tuesday October 8, 2019 under the loving care of her family and friends.
 
She was born October 24, 1947. She married her husband, of 53 years, on December 18, 1965.
 
Survived by her husband, Charles W. Town II; son, Charles W. Town III (Patricia Scouten); daughter, Sandra S. Grant (Kenneth); sister, Katherine Smith (Richard); granddaughter, Requel A. Gunter (Christopher Hatch); three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
 
She was preceded in death by her parents, Katherine E. and Floyd F. Fessenden. Being from Grand Rapids, she later found her adult life to be in Jackson, Michigan and the last fourteen years she spent most of her days in Columbus, New Mexico.  She loved her family and lifelong friends, including her new friends in Columbus.
 
She had many crafting  talents including sewing, knitting and wood working.  We must not forget about her love for her dogs.  She cared for many other animals with fostering and placing them in forever homes.  She loved traveling and fishing and just enjoying life.
 
A celebration of life will be at a later date. Cremation has been entrusted to Baca’s Mimbres Crematory.

Lester Blackham Jr.

Lester Blackham Jr., jokester, civil engineer, foodie, family man, businessman, fisherman, Elvis fan, John Wayne fan, Trekkie, church goer, missionary, volunteer, scholar, beloved, husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend, passed away September 30th, 2019.
 
Lester was born a blue-eyed, towheaded cutie to Frances Smyth Blackham (1907-1993) and Lester Blackham (1906-1994) on October 30th, 1940 in Kenilworth, Carbon County, Utah. As the youngest living, Les roamed the wilds of Utah, including Helper, Spring Glen and Fish Lake. He predeceased is parents and siblings Charles Leslie Blackham (1930-1989) and Paul Vincent Blackham (1951-1952), and is survived by siblings Verona Balle, Frances Cunningham, Fred Blackham, Frank Blackham and many extended family.

From a chance meeting at a dance, Les chased and caught his sweetheart, Elizabeth Ann. Married 54 years, Liz and Les did everything together, including raising eight children and helping to raise one grandchild; James Blackham, William Blackham, Thomas Blackham, Brenda Tenney, Rebecca Blackham, Nathan Blackham, Candice Dosela, Buddy Ray Blackham and Alexander Blackham. Lester Blackham is survived by his wife, eight children and their spouses, 26 grandchildren and brother-in-law, Robert Williams. Les adored his wife, children and grandchildren.

Les was a learned man and a man of faith. A seeker of the scriptures, Les had a deep faith in his Heavenly Father and in Jesus Christ as his savior. He diligently served the members of his church for most of his life. When he was 38 years old, while a father of seven children, Les earned his bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from University of California at Long Beach. As a civil engineer and later as a partner in a civil engineering firm, Les completed many noteworthy projects, even winning awards for his work; 1. Engineered a huge subdivision, Sierra Del Oro, in Riverside, CA, 2. Redesigned Missouri Boulevard, Las Cruces, NM, and won award for the project, 3. Engineered multiple subdivisions along Highway 70, Las Cruces, NM, 4. Partnered in BRG Engineering & Associates Inc. Civil Engineering firm, Las Cruces, NM. Les served multiple missions for his church, including a working in the Bishop’s Storehouse, and working as a Ward and Stake missionary. 

Lester Blackham Jr. leaves a legacy of laughter, faith, service, studiousness, a strong work ethic and family. He will be missed.

The funeral will be held October 12th, 2019 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1000 W Florida St, Deming, NM. The Viewing starts at 9am, the Family Only Viewing is at 10:30am, and the Funeral Service starts at 11am. At approximately 12noon, the Procession will drive to Mountain View Cemetery 3410 E Pine St, Deming, NM, where the grave will be dedicated.

Flossie Irene (Phillips) Pollock

FLOSSIE IRENE (PHILLIPS) POLLOCK, 82, resident of Deming passed away Friday September 27, 2019.  No services will be held and cremation will take place at Baca’s Mimbres Crematory.  Inurnment will be at Ft. Bayard National Cemetery with her husband Bill.

Flossie was born December 10, 1936 in Clark County, Illinois to Daniel Phillips and Edna (Thompson) Phillips.  She was the eldest of six children.  Harley Allen who died in infancy, Douglas of Texas, Lois Tharp (Ron) of Deming, Bruce preceded her in death, and Daniel Jr. (Pat) of Indiana.

Flossie loved children and had six.  Bill Jr. (Cindy) of Columbus, Wanda of Oklahoma, Daniel of El Paso, Diana of Deming, Andrea of Las Cruces, and Sharon (Sam) of Deming.  She raised 3 of her 18 grandchildren and was raising 3 of her 42 great grandchildren when the Lord called her home.

In their 55 years of marriage she and her husband Bill lived in many places but New Mexico was her home.  She and Bill were married April 26, 1954 and he preceded her in death on April 7, 2011.  Flossie loved to drive and enjoyed the years she drove “Fire Busses” transporting firefighters to fires like the one in Los Alamos in 2000.  She also drove city busses in Roswell for several years.  She drove the bus for the handicapped and enjoyed visiting with her passengers.  Waitressing was another job she enjoyed because she could visit with her regulars and many strangers just passing through.  She and Bill are off on another adventure but she will be missed by her family and many friends.
