Manuel B. Gonzalez

Manuel B. Gonzalez, 82, Deming resident passed away Sunday February 24, 2019 at his home surrounded by his family.

Manuel will lie in state at the family home, 1215 Apache Hills Drive, NW, for an all-night wake on Friday March 1, 2019 beginning at 4 o’clock. Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated at Saint Ann’s Catholic Church at 10 o’clock Saturday March 2, 2019. Concluding services and interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Fr. Manuel F. Ibarra will officiate.

Manuel was born June 24, 1936 to Hermelinda Borrego and Estanislao Gonzalez in El Coyote, Coahuila, Mexico. He moved to Deming in 1994 coming from Eloy, Arizona and worked most of his life in the agriculture industry. Manuel’s favorite pastime was his roosters, he was a jokester and every year he celebrated the tradition of “El dia de San Juan”.

He is survived by his wife, Guadalupe Gonzalez of the home; children, Alicia Sandoval and husband Isidro of Eloy, AZ, Bertha Salazar and husband Luis of Las Cruces, Manuel Gonzalez and wife Beatriz of Vado, Armando Gonzalez of Eloy, Javier Gonzalez, Adan Gonzalez and wife Sandra and Lupita Gonzalez all of Deming; sister, Julia Gonzalez of El Paso, TX; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his parents, Estanislao and Hermelinda Gonzalez; son, Jesus Gonzalez and granddaughter, Alicia Rivera.

Serving as pallbearers will be Adan, Javier, Armando and Manuel Gonzalez, Isidro Sandoval and Luis Salazar.

Ronald Lee Paulk

Ronald Lee Paulk was born in Deming on August 23, 1951 to Clifford H. Paulk Jr. and Ida Jo Haas Paulk. He died February 26, 2019 at Mimbres Memorial Hospital.

Visitation will be Friday March 1, 2019 from 3 to 6 at Baca’s Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be Saturday March 2, 2019 at 2 o’clock in the afternoon at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Brad Reeves officiating. Concluding services and interment will follow at Mt. View Cemetery.

Ron grew up on a farm in the Sunshine School area. He sometimes helped with chores but mostly tormented his three brothers. Ronnie was a very special, special needs person. He attended Deming Public Schools and later became involved in SWISH and Life Quest employment and day-hab workshops.

He was a very happy boy and had many friends and he invited them all to attend his yearly birthday parties. Ronnie loved Special Olympics and won many medals and ribbons in bowling competitions. He enjoyed football and was obsessed with the Cowboy's team. He collected many autographs when he visited their summer camp in California.

He is survived by his mother, Ida Jo Stewart, his brother, Bill Paulk (Jo Ann), his brother, Dick Paulk (Kathy), his sister-in-law, Terri Paulk, his step-sisters, Judy Palmar (John) Christi Ruebush and his step-brother, Pat Stewart. Also survived by six nephews and four nieces.

Ronald was preceded in death by his father, Clifford H. Paulk Jr. and his brother Clifford H. Paulk III. He was preceded in death by his four grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford H. Paulk Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. L. Haas.

Pallbearers will be Jed Paulk, Gene Paulk, Jake Paulk, Ryan Paulk, Jay Paulk and Tracey Hagar.

Elizabeth Ann Baca "Lizzy", 44, Deming resident joined the rest of the angels in heaven Wednesday February 20, 2019 at Banner University Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona.
 
Visitation will be Sunday February 24, 2019 from 3 until 6 o’clock in the afternoon at Baca’s Funeral Chapel.  Rosary will follow at 7 o’clock at Saint Ann’s Catholic Church led by Guillermina Macias.  Mass of the Christian Burial will take place Monday February 25, 2019 at 10 o’clock in the morning at Saint Ann’s Catholic Church. Concluding services and interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Father Manuel F. Ibarra, Pastor, will officiate.  A gathering of friends and family will follow at Saint Ann’s Parish Hall.
 
“Lizzy” as she was affectionately known was born December 21, 1974 to Velia Vasquez and Julian Baca in Deming.  She was a special child since birth and attended Life Quest Day Habilitation and enjoyed her community activities, being on the Special Olympic bowling team, dancing and holiday parties with her peers.  Last year she was crowned Queen at the First Annual Down Syndrome Celebration in Deming. She served as a volunteer at the Senior Center. Summertime was important to her because she would spend her time swimming at her “Uncle Sam’s Aquatic Center”.   Lizzy was an active member of Saint Ann’s where she was an altar server and a member of the League of Sacred Heart.  
 
She is survived by her step-mother, Martha Baca of the home who raised her after the death of her mother, Velia in 1996; sister, Clara Gonzalez and husband Jesus; brothers, Henry Baca and wife Ivy, Marty Baca and wife Janet all of Deming; caregiver, Mary Helen Ochoa.  Nieces and nephews survive her as well as many uncles, aunts and extended family of classmates. 
 
Preceded in death by her parents, Julian Baca in 2017 and Velia Baca in 1996.
 
Pallbearers will be Matthew Baca, Albino Cardona, Ezequiel, Isaac and Adrian Schultz and Jesus Gonzalez.

PATRICIA JEAN JOHNSON, 70, resident of Deming passed away Tuesday February 5, 2019 at her home.

A memorial service will be this Friday, February 22, 2019 at 11 o’clock in the morning at Ft. Bayard National Cemetery.  Veterans honors will be accorded.  Cremation has taken place at Baca’s Mimbres Crematory.

Patricia was born June 8, 1948 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and retired from the United States Army.  Locally she was a member of the American Legion and the Loyal Order of Moose.

Angelina Belen Ortiz, 5, a resident of Deming, NM entered eternal rest on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at UNM in Albuquerque, NM. Angelina was born on April 10, 2013 in Silver City, NM to Ramon Ortiz and Claudia Grajeda.

She is survived by her father, Ramon Ortiz of Las Cruces, NM; her mother, Claudia Grajeda, and her companion Aaron Rodriguez of Deming, NM; one brother, Bohmani Ortiz of Las Cruces, NM; six sisters, Ashayan Rose Grajeda of Deming, NM; Natalie Ortiz of Las Cruces, NM; Vyanice Ortiz of Deming, NM; Yashira Ortiz of Las Cruces, NM; Yzzabella Ortiz of Las Cruces, NM and Analisa Ortiz of Las Cruces, NM; maternal grandparents, Mary Alvarado and Rosie Grajeda;  paternal grandparents, Jose and Guadalupe Ortiz;  great maternal grandparents, Belen and Ramon Grajeda; her god mother, Angela Lopez of Deming, NM; special guardian, Ashley Valenzuela and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Angelina was preceded in death by one brother, Ramon Angel Ortiz.

Visitation will be on Friday, February 22, 2019 from 2:00pm to 3:00pm at Terrazas Funeral Chapels. A Celebration of life service will then begin at 3:00pm. Pallbearers will be Aaron Rodriguez, Ismael Chacon, Timothy Young, Aaron Garcia, Julian Piñon, Joel Ortiz and Aaron Garcia Jr.

Cremation will then take place at Terrazas Crematory. Following the services the family would like to invite everyone to meet and fellowship at St. Ann Parish Hall. Arrangements are with Terrazas Funeral Chapels & Cremator.

Louis “Louie” Michael Quarrell

Louis “Louie” Michael Quarrell passed away on Thursday, February 7, 2019 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

A rosary service will be recited Wednesday February 13, 2019 at 9:30 in the morning at Saint Ann’s Catholic Church led by Christine B. Milo.  Mass of the Christian Burial to follow at 10 o’clock.  Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery with Fr. Manuel F. Ibarra, Pastor officiating. Cremation has been entrusted to Baca’s Mimbres Crematory. 

Louie was born on October 3, 1956 in Deming, New Mexico to Louis and Mary Gonzalez Quarrell. 

He played baseball in High School as a pitcher and first baseman.  Louie made All District 3AAA Honorable Mention as a first baseman, First-year Letterman and batted 376 in 1973. 


He worked at Deming Packing and Surplus City Hardware Store in Deming; Macs Meats in Las Cruces with his brother Bobby and at Brown & Root in Nebraska and in Texas.  He also worked for Artistic Iron Works in Las Vegas, Nevada and at the Hot Springs in Faywood, New Mexico.  For the last 15 years, he worked with his brother John at the House Doctor in home construction and remodeling. 


Louie lived in Arenas Valley, New Mexico. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing.  His hobbies were woodworking, pottery, art sketching and metal detecting.  He was also an excellent horse shoe and washer player. Louie enjoyed playing softball with his uncles and cousins and was a loyal and avid Pittsburgh Steelers Fan. He was a free spirit with a witty sense of humor who loved his family and spending Thanksgiving and Christmas together. One of his favorite things to do was picking piñones.

Louie was preceded in death by his grandparents, Chapo and Pola Quarrell and Jose and Bersabe Gonzalez, parents Louis and Mary Gonzalez Quarrell, sister Virginia Quarrell and brother Steve Quarrell. He is survived by his children Lori, Elena, Ed and Josh and their mother Ginni Schroeder and companion Gale Sera and many grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Mary Ramirez, Margo (Terry) Lamuraglia, Julia Saia, Lilly Quarrell, Michelle Burnside and brothers Bobby (Nancy) Quarrell and John (Barbara) Quarrell and many extended relatives and friends.

Honorary bearers named are Joshua Quarrell, Ed Yarbrough, Barney Joe Quarrell, Danny Quarrell, John Quarrell, Bobby Quarrell, Charlie Miranda, David Miranda, Bob Lopez, Ray Misquez and Marciso Cecil Torres.

Gladys Yvonne Taylor, 85, Deming, New Mexico resident formerly of Brownwood, Texas passed away Saturday February 9, 2019 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
 
A memorial service will be held in Deming at Ninth Street Church of Christ Tuesday February 12, 2019 at 10 o’clock in the morning. Charles Prince will officiate. The services in Brownwood, Texas will be held Friday February 15, 2019 at 1 o’clock in the afternoon at Greenleaf Cemetery. Roland Bowen of the Austin Avenue Church of Christ will officiate.
 
Gladys was born January 3, 1934 to Gladys Pearce and Calbert Penn in Brownwood, TX. Until moving to Deming in 2003 she lived in Brownwood where she worked as a store clerk, accountant and manager in grocery stores. She was an active member of the Church of Christ there and in Deming her church was the Ninth Street Church of Christ.  
 
She is survived by a son, Sam (Julia) Reagan of Tularosa, NM; 2 daughters, Deborah (Kenneth) Stockton of  Deming and  Denise (Randy) Lindsey of Hillsboro, NM; 7 grandchildren, Chad Reagan, Craig Stockton, Ginger Jones, Clay Stockton, Brandi Lindsey, Brooke Scarsella and Rankin Lindsey; 13 great-grandchildren Koye, Avy Jo, Darin, Dezi, Zane, Hayden, Charlotte, Morgan, Taylor, Cutter, Teagan, Raelynn and Bristol and a sister, Emma Jean Neal of Seguin, TX; 2 sisters-in-law, Peggy Penn of Sweetwater, TX and Wilma Penn of Brownwood, TX. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
 
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Johnny & Calvert Penn Jr.
 
Serving as pallbearers will be Craig and Clay Stockton, Rankin Lindsey, Brandon Jones and Matt Scarsella.
 
The family expresses their gratitude to Dr. George Williams and his staff to the Bee Hive Assisted Living, the Jim Wood Care Center and Mesilla Valley Hospice.

Blanch Smith

Blanch Smith, age 90, passed away peacefully January 30, 2019, due to dementia and congestive heart failure. She was born May 6, 1928, in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Maude and John Vandervort. They then moved to California and she later found and married the love of her life, Orville Smith in January of 1956. Orville, a new Optometrist, set off to Deming, NM to start a practice and she later followed with son, David, in tow.

Blanch was a beloved grandmother who her grandchildren could always count on for the best sandwiches, fun games, and read the best stories. She also brought everyone together with wonderful home cooked meals.

Blanch was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters Peggy Bethel and Marion Larsen.
Blanch is survived by her husband of 63 years, by son, David (Joni) Smith of Craig, CO, daughter, Patty (Wayne) Ciccotelli of Deming, daughter, Sandy Smith of Deming; five grandchildren, Jedediah Smith, Jaclyn Ley, Megan Behrens, and Brandi & Cody Creager; three great-grandchildren, Cade Behrens, and Micah & Virtie Rose Ley. She also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.

A memorial service will be held Monday February 4, 2019 at 2 o’clock in the afternoon at Baca’s Funeral Chapel with Minister Darrell L. Witmer officiating. Cremation is entrusted to Baca’s Mimbres Crematory.

Carlos "Charlie" Ochoa Jr.

Carlos "Charlie" Ochoa Jr., 71, resident of Carlsbad and formerly of Deming passed away Tuesday January 29, 2019 in Carlsbad.



A graveside service will be held Wednesday morning, February 6, 2019, at 10 o'clock at Mountain View Cemetery in Deming. Veteran honors will be accorded by the Marines.


Charlie was born December 6, 1947 to Aurora Gonzalez and Carlos Ochoa Sr. in Lordsburg. He was a faithful, loyal and loving father, brother and friend. Charlie was a Vietnam Veteran having served in the United States Marine Corps for three years, receiving a Bronze Star for heroic achievements with continued service in the NM Army National Guard for 27 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife and soul mate, Christina S. Ochoa who died December 10, 2012.


He is survived by 10 sisters and 5 brothers and his children; Robelia "Robi" (Steve) Ruiz, Carlos (Christina) Ochoa III, Angelica (Jason) Anderson, Petrina (Isaac) Garcia, Elizabeth (Gabe) Rubio, Josiah (Desiree) Ochoa, Jesse Ochoa (Amanda Dawson); grandchildren: Erin, Sarah, Stephanie and Mateo Ruiz, Katia, Carlos IV, Anahi, Taya, Ezra, Elsea and Jesse Ochoa II. Orin, Reagan and Osmund Anderson, Isaiah and Christian Garcia, Arabella, Juliana and Elijah Rubio.


Pallbearers will be Carlos III, Ochoa and Jesse Ochoa, Issac and Isaiah Garcia, Jason Anderson. Honorary pallbearers are Steve and Mateo Ruiz, Carlos IV, Jesse II and Ezra Ochoa, Christian Garcia, Orin and Osmund Anderson and Elijah Rubio.
