Joyce G. Berlier, 79, Deming resident passed away peacefully Sunday July 28, 2019 after complications of a stroke at her home surrounded by her loving family.

No service will take place as were her wishes. Cremation has been entrusted to Baca’s Mimbres Crematory.

Joyce was born March 6, 1940 in Cowgill, Missouri to Ila J. Baker and William F. Elam. Joyce moved to Deming from Greeley, Colorado and was a member of the TOPS program. She volunteered at the Deming Senior Center where she enjoyed reading to others and was a loving foster parent.

She is survived by 2 sons, Charles F. Bullock and wife Roiann of Greeley, CO, Lance E. Berlier of Deming; 2 daughters, Dawna J. Clifton of Knoxville, TN, Ila M. San Miguel and husband Enoch of Deming; 2 brothers, Howard Elam and wife Sharon, Donnie Elam and wife Kathy both of Greeley; 8 grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her parents and 3 brothers, Lyndell, Bud and Judson Elam.

Entrusted to the care of Baca’s Funeral Chapels.

Jesus Acevedo Acosta

Jesus Acevedo Acosta, 84, Deming resident passed away Saturday July 27, 2019 at his home.

Visitation will be Thursday August 1, 2019 from 4-6 pm at Baca’s Funeral Chapel where the holy rosary will be recited at 6 pm led by Deacon Manny Madrid. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday August 2, 2019 at 10 am at Saint Ann’s Catholic Church. Father Manuel F. Ibarra will officiate. Interment will follow at the Garfield Cemetery with Deacon Manny Madrid officiating.

Jesus was born November 19, 1934, in Huejucar, Jalisco, Mexico to Ramon Acosta Luna and Maria Acevedo Robles. He married Barbara (Lita) Chavez on August 29, 1959 in Garfield and they made their home in Derry. Jesus worked for Price-Black Farms for 29 years. Later he and his wife moved to Deming in 2006 to be closer to family. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and being around his family. He was a communicant of Saint Ann’s Catholic Church.

Jesus was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara; brothers, Juan Acosta, Isidro Acosta and Jose Angel Acosta and one sister, Margarita Padilla.

Survivors include his sons, Martin Acosta and wife Andrea of Albuquerque, Lino Chavez of Deming; sister, Primitiva Barrio of Deming; two brothers, Silvestre Acosta and Enrique Acosta of Huejucar, Jalisco; sisters-in-law, Josie Herrera of Deming, Lori Morales of Silver City and brother-in-law, Santiago Chavez. His grandchildren, Ezra and Emily Acosta of Albuquerque and many nieces, nephews and God-children.

Serving as pallbearers will be Ezra Acosta, Fernando Barrio, Manny Ovalle, Juan Acosta Jr., Diego Herrera and Henry Acosta.

Honorary bearers are Ramon Barrio, Martin Barrio, Ivan Barrio, Javier Acosta, Robert Acosta and Santiago Chavez.

Martha Spivey Gosdin, 97, Deming resident passed away Saturday July 27, 2019 at La Posada Assisted Living Facility in Las Cruces.

A graveside service will be held Thursday August 1, 2019 at 12 o’clock in the afternoon at Mountain View Cemetery. Pastor Cesar Chavez will officiate.

Richard “Rick” L. Uzueta, 61, Deming resident passed away Friday, July 26, 2019 in the comfort of his home.

Visitation will be Thursday, August 1, 2019 at 10 o’clock in the morning at Baca’s Funeral Chapel. Recitation of the holy rosary will follow at 11 o’clock with Deacon Bill Holguin officiating. Memorial Mass will be celebrated that afternoon at 2 o’clock at St. Ann’s Catholic Church with the rite of committal and inurnment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Fr. Casmir Anozie will officiate.

Rick was born August 26, 1957 in Deming to Richard and Mabel (Aragon) Uzueta. He graduated from Deming High School and worked locally in the family bakery. He then went to work in retail which brought him to Willcox, Arizona where he met many great friends. For the past 16 years Rick was dedicated to his job with Rutherford Diversified Industries. In his spare time he enjoyed watching baseball and football, going to spring training, camping, and playing a round of golf when he could.

He is survived by his mother, Mabel Uzueta of Deming; daughter, Celeste Martinez and her husband Gary of Las Cruces; two grandsons, Diego and Santiago Martinez; Celeste’s mother, Rose Marie Uzueta of Deming; brother, Tim Uzueta (Cheryl) of Reserve, NM; two sisters, Eva Mendez (Joe) of Los Angeles, CA and Tricia Matthews (Don); sister-in-law, Sandra Uzueta; a brother by choice, Kevin Butler (Dolores) of Deming, and several nieces and nephews.

Rick was preceded in death by his father, Richard P. Uzueta and by one brother, David “Donut” Uzueta.

Honorary pallbearers are Kevin Butler II, Gus Morales, Julian and Richard Mendez, Aaron and Adam Uzueta.

Eddie Diaz

Eddie Diaz, 60, a resident of Deming, NM went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 26, 2019. Eddie was born on December 18, 1958, in Deming, NM to Ruben V. Diaz and Antonia Perez Diaz. He was a true servant of God and spread joy everywhere he went.

His unforgettable smile brought comfort and healing to all. Eddie never met a stranger and treated everyone like his brothers and sisters. He was a true farmer in every sense, planting seeds of love and hope in anyone he crossed paths with. He enjoyed raising crops for the Diaz Produce Stand and loved sharing stories even more.

His legacy will live on within each soul he has touched. He lived and walked this earth as Christ has commanded us to. To honor his memory, his family encourages an act of kindness in his name or a memorial contribution to the Deming Luna County Senior Citizens Center. He is survived by both of his parents; his loving wife of 36 years, Guillermina Diaz; one son, Eddie Diaz Jr.; three daughters, Maggie Diaz-Romero and her husband Rudy; Cecilia Diaz and Cristina Diaz; four brothers, Javier Diaz and his wife Diana; Armando Diaz and his wife Sonia; Samuel Diaz and Carlos Diaz and his wife Blanca; two sisters, Elia Holguin and her husband Arturo and Rosie Chancellor and her husband Ken; and two grandsons, Noah and Nickolas Romero. Visitation will be on Friday, August 2, 2019 from 6-7pm with the holy rosary beginning at 7pm at St. Ann Catholic Church with Irma Jaurequi officiating. Funeral mass will be on Saturday, August 3, 2019 at 9am at St. Ann Catholic Church with Father Richard Catanach officiating. Concluding services with an interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Cristina Diaz, Eddie Diaz Jr., Carlos Diaz, Mauricio Corral, Jorge Lerma and Jimmy Lessau. Honorary pallbearers are Rudy Romero, Estevan Carreon and the rest of his family and friends.

“Gracias, Señor y Salvador mío, por amarme a pesar de mis faltas y errores. Yo también te amo de todo corazón.” Bendiciones a todos los ahijados de Eddie.

Jackie Suzanne Metheny

Jackie Suzanne Metheny joined her late husband, Allen Dale Metheny, in heaven on 07/19/2019. She was 65 years old. She put up a valiant fight against lung and bone cancer right up to the end.

Jackie was born in Hamilton, New York to Charles and Joan (Vrooman) Turner on July 15, 1954. The oldest of seven children she lived life to the fullest. She loved to laugh and had a very giving soul (giving to a fault at times!). She loved helping those in need whenever possible and was a strong supporter of Deming Animal Sanctuary and volunteered at the Silver Whiskers Thrift Store. She loved that store and the ladies that worked there.

 In 1971 the family moved to Florida where she met and married Bill Harper and had two sons, Chris and Kevin. After they divorced, she met Allen Dale Metheny and they were married in December, 1987. They lived in West Virginia then moved to the Carolinas and bought a place up in the mountains.  Jackie loved "her" mountain and lived there until the passing of Allen in November, 2013. Shortly after his death she moved to Deming, NM to be close to her family.

Jackie was an avid reader and enjoyed a variety of authors. She was also very talented in the painting of ceramics and had many collections. She was a hockey fan and you could hear her rooting for her team in the back yard when watching a game on TV. She was also a NASCAR fan and loved watching old westerns.

Jackie is survived by her father, Charles Turner and step mother Patricia Turner; sisters, Trudy (Lonnie) Scott Nikiski, AK, Cathy (Curtis) Jandt,  Deming, NM, Lora (Don) Hocking,  Delmar, Maryland; brothers, Jeffrey (Maria) Turner, Deming, NM,  Richard (Sandra) Turner, Deming, NM and Douglas (Delia) Turner Deming, NM; sons, Christopher and Kevin Harper of Florida; daughter in law, Meribeth Metheny;  grandchildren, Jason Metheny, Joshua Metheny, Tisa Metheny, Rhiannon Countryman, Dale Metheny and four great grandchildren.

Per Jackie's request no services will be held. Cremation has been entrusted to Baca’s Mimbres Crematory.

Clark L. Reynolds, 64, a resident of Deming, NM entered eternal rest on Thursday, July 11, 2019 at his residence. Clark was born on September 9, 1954 in Hart, Michigan to Merle Reynolds and Dorothy Kruse. Clark had a passion for shooting pool. He loved teaching other people especially young people how to shoot pool. He will be truly missed by all his family and friend He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Sigman-Reynolds; two brothers, Bruce Reynolds of Deming, NM and Shaun Reynolds and his wife Liz of Deming, NM; one sister, Nadine Cisneros of Bayard, NM; Numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. A memorial service will be on Thursday, July 18, 2019 at 10am at Terrazas Funeral Chapels. Cremation will take place at Terrazas Crematory. Arrangements are with Terrazas Funeral Chapels.

Ruby (Nemec) Greenwell

Ruby (Nemec) Greenwell passed away on July 9, 2019.

She was born April 4, 1929 in Granger,Texas to Stanley and Mary Nemec. The family moved to Deming when she was 4 years old. Her brothers John, Stanley, Leonard and herself attended school at Lewis Flats (now known as the Adobe Deli). After graduating Deming high school, she moved to California where she married and had 1 child, her daughter Vickie. She divorced in 1967 and remarried Homer F Greenwell. They moved back to Deming in 1972 to help take care of elder parents.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Homer, and brothers John, Stanley, and Leonard. She is survived by her daughter, Vickie Willey and husband Roy, grandchildren Teresa Taylor and husband Kevin, Sarah Cabrera and husband Victor, Kenneth Teague Jr., Jessica Cabrera, 9 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She had an extreme love for animals so in lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation for spay and neuter in her name to the Deming Animal Clinic, 2117 Columbus Road SE, Deming, NM 88030.

There will be a viewing Monday July 15th from 5-7pm at Baca’ Funeral Chapel. A graveside service will be Tuesday July 16th at 2 o’clock in the afternoon at Mt. View Cemetery.

Maria Dolores “Lolita” Ballinas

Maria Dolores “Lolita” Ballinas, 76, was welcomed by the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ into the Kingdom of Heaven on Monday July 8, 2019.
 
Visitation will be Thursday July 11, 2019 at 4 o’clock in the afternoon at Baca’s Funeral Chapel with a rosary service to follow at 6 o’clock led by Christine B. Milo.  Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday July 12, 2019 at 11 o’clock in the morning at Saint Ann’s Catholic Church.  Concluding services and interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.  Fr. Manuel F. Ibarra, Pastor will officiate.
 
“Lolita”, as she was affectionately known, was born April 15, 1943 to Manuela Espinoza and Alfonso Quintero in Nuevo Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico.  She lived in Deming for 57 years coming from Veracruz, Mexico.  She married Ricardo Ballinas on July 17, 1962 in Cuidad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico and together raised 6 children.  Lolita had a special love for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was known as “Mom Lola”.  She was very devoted to her faith, dedicated many hours of adoration and was part of the Apostolado at Saint Ann’s Catholic Church. Lolita was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and always encouraged her children to strive to be the best and supported her family in every way possible.
 
Lolita is survived by her husband of 57 years, Ricardo Ballinas of the home; children, Linda Ballinas of Deming, Ricardo Ballinas and wife Christina of Palmdale, CA, Josafat Ballinas and wife Alma of Deming, Lillian B. Newcombe and husband Jeff of Virginia and Allan Ballinas and wife Liz of Deming; daughter-in-law, Josie Ballinas of Deming; brothers, Roberto Quintero of Deming, Alfonso Quintero of Albuquerque, Jose Quintero of Phoenix, Lorenzo Quintero of Las Vegas, NV and Miguel Quintero of Oregon; sisters, Maria Quintero of Albuquerque, Sara and Gloria Quintero both of Phoenix, AZ; 24 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
 
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfonso and Manuela Quintero; sister, Ludivina Quintero and son, Adrian Ballinas who died April 26, 2017.
 
Pallbearers will be Alexis Ballinas, Ricky Ballinas, Ivan Ballinas, PA Garcia, Elijah Ballinas, Justin Ballinas, Esteban Ballinas, Mark Ballinas, Adrian Ballinas and Javier Quintero. Honorary bearers are her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Higinia Hernandez Martinez

Higinia Hernandez Martinez, 101, longtime resident of Deming (previously of Columbus, NM) passed away Wednesday, July 3, 2019 surrounded by loved ones.
 
Recitation of the Rosary will begin at 9:30 am Monday, July 8, 2019 at Saint Ann’s Catholic Church led by Lupe Hernandez. Memorial Mass will follow at 10 o’clock.  Concluding service and inurnment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery with Fr. Prakasham Babu officiating.
 
Higinia was born on January 1, 1918 to Jose and Bernarda Hernandez in Jerome, Arizona. She enjoyed sewing quilts by hand, crocheting, needle point and was a fanatic of wrestling and Princess Diana. She selflessly cared for multiple loved ones during their time of need, including her blind mother for 22 years and her daughters during their illnesses.  She was a woman of strong and unshakable faith.
 
Higinia is survived by her daughter, Estella (Ernesto) Casas; son, Armando (†Socorro) Martinez; step-daughter, Socorro (Angel) Gonzalez; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
 
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Bernarda; husband, Mateo Martinez; daughters, Paula (†Bill) Miller and Rosemary Porras; step-daughters, Rita Holguin, Lala DeLira, Agustina Guereque, Patsy Arenibas, Josie Parra and Carmen Maynes; step-sons, Ramon, Juan and Mateo (Pete); sisters, Camila, Paz, Elena and Inocensia (Chencha); brothers, Lupe, Enrique and Luis.
 
We also would like to include her caregivers who gave their time, love and dedication: Estella Casas, Glenda Sanchez, Sylvia Casas and Lorena Chavez.
 
She will be greatly missed for immense empathy towards others. Her memory will live on in the hearts and minds of family and friends.
