In the 1970s Socorro’s life would dramatically change when she would be courted and go on to marry her one and only husband of 32 years-Alberto Torres. They married in 1976 and moved to Chicago, Il. There all three of Socorro and Albert’s children would be born and Socorro’s sister would join and become part of the family.
In 1989, she moved with her family and retiring husband to the village of Columbus, NM. Before she herself would retire one day she’d have the opportunity to learn to drive and then proceeded to drive herself and her sister to work for a long time. After her sister retired Socorro would continue working at the Walmart bakery until retirement.
As her love language is food, she would be proud to know that she is known for all of her dishes, especially for her rice and her frijoles charros.
In her later years she derived great joy from being a grandmother to five, making them bean burritos with and without cheese and that arroz con leche, driving around in her Chevy Cruze, running errands, and in her house chores with her chickens and her dog and cat.
Socorro was tough love and life lessons, and she will be missed by everyone who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her parents; Jesus Rodriguez and Maria De Jesus Gutierrez of Guanajuato, Mexico, an assortment of siblings, and her husband, Alberto Torres of Columbus, NM.
She is survived by her sister and best friend, Trinidad Rodriguez; daughter Abigail Schoppen and her husband Martin Schoppen, grandchildren Sophie and Laura Schoppen of Las Cruces, NM, son Alberto Torres and grandson Matteo Torres of Columbus, NM, and daughter Gabriela Torres and grandchildren Antonio and Gabriel Morrow of Columbus, NM.
