Floyd was born in Somerset, PA on June 13th, 1924 to Wilson Hoffman and Mayme Gardner. On December 14, 1942 he was sworn into the Navy where he served for 4 years active duty and 11 years in the reserves.
He graduated from Rolla School of Mines in Missouri in January, 1950 with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering and was recruited by Phelps Dodge for their operations in Morenci, Arizona.
Before leaving for his new career he married the love of his life Virginia Mitchell on January 21, 1950. Together they welcomed their 2 beloved children Floyd (Eddie) and Barbara on November 14, 1950 and February 23, 1953 respectively.
Floyd was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed gardening, reading, collecting antique books and glass bottles, camping and rockhounding. He was active in many clubs and organizations including: Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Shriners, American Legion, and Order of Eastern Star. He also enjoyed working with children and volunteered his time coaching softball, as a boy scout leader and with Job’s Daughters. He was a spiritual man and grew up in the Lutheran Church before later joining First United Methodist Church in Silver City in 1987. During his time with Phelps Dodge he had the opportunity to travel to many different countries and loved sharing stories and souvenirs with his grandchildren. After retiring from Phelps Dodge (for a second time) in 1996 he devoted his time and energy to his family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his life and he loved all the time he was able to spend with them. There was nothing he wouldn’t have given to any of his close family or friends, even if that meant he would do without. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him.
Floyd is survived by his daughter Barbara Hoffman Wood and his son Floyd (Eddie) Hoffman and wife Sid; his 4 grandchildren, Bradley Wood and wife Erin, Robbie Hoffman and wife Michele, Krista Wood, and Deidre Wilmeth and husband Josh; his 10 great grandchildren, Kameron, Cassidy, Emily, Logan, Ryan, Maci, Kambrie, Kaylee, Ethan and Connor; 1 great-great grandson Aaron and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings and wife of 64 years, Virginia Hoffman.
