August 11, 1938 – October 9, 2023
Raul Viramontes, a devoted husband, loving father, brother, and cherished grampa, passed away on October 9th, 2023, at the age of 85. Known as “Ruly” to all his friends and family, he leaves behind a legacy of love, family, laughter, and beloved memories.
Raul was born into a farming family on August 11, 1938 in La Union, NM, the fifth child to Pablo and Delfina Viramontes. He graduated from Gadsden High School in Anthony NM, then moved to Deming to continue a life of farming with his eldest brother, Arturo.
In 1960 he married the love of his life, Teresa (Nina) Gomez, and together they raised four sons: Paul, Kenny, Ronnie and Michael. The demands of raising this growing family motivated him to join Valley Implement Company as a White and International Harvester farm equipment and GMC Truck salesman. Raul’s skills and determination led to his becoming partner of Valley Implement along with Rex Chaney. His passion for supporting our local farming community led to his becoming an agent with Butte Mutual Insurance Company, insuring multiple types of crops throughout Luna County. He expanded his agriculture acumen becoming a broker/buyer of cotton for Rountree Cotton Company.
Seeking a new career adventure, Raul exited the agriculture sector and partnered with his wife, Nina, opening Sun Valley Mercantile, an antique and used furniture store. Raul later returned to his deep agriculture roots, opening Viramontes Equipment Sales, drawing a new and emerging clientele base from across our southern border while maintaining his relationships with the local farming community forged over the years.
As a father, Raul enjoyed spending his free time involved with his son’s summer and extracurricular activities. For years he coached his sons’ little league baseball teams, and remained an active and vocal Wildcat fan, following their sports competitions both at home and away.
A devoted man of faith, Raul was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. He served as an usher at weekly mass and as a volunteer at the annual Klobase Festival until the onset of health issues no longer afforded him the ability to actively participate in the activities he so loved. Raul fully focused his later years on family, enjoying time spent with his beloved wife, his adult children and grandchildren, and close friends.
Raul is survived by his wife Teresa (Nina); Sons Paul (Tracy), Kenny (Amanda), Ron (Steve) and Michael (Leslie); grandchildren Christian, Ilianna, and Dominic (Kenny); and Adriel and Isaac (Michael); and beloved brother Ruben. He is also survived by sisters Belia Vega and Carmela Lopez. He is preceded in death by his parents Delfina and Pablo; brother Arturo; sisters Dolores Salazar (Ray) and Margaret Alba (Carlos).
A rosary will take place Friday October 13th, 2023 at 6 o’clock in the evening at Baca’s Funeral Chapel to be led by his son Paul Viramontes. There will be a Funeral Mass Saturday, October 14, 2023, at 1 o’clock in the afternoon at Holy Family Catholic Church at 615 S Copper St., Deming, NM with Rev. Prakasham Babu Naripogula presiding.
