
He was born Sept. 2, 1936 in Hatch, NM to Francisca and Simon Gomez, attended Cobre High and settled in Silver City after barber school. Ray cut hair and swapped stories for over 52 years at Ray’s Barbershop and was proud to provide the “first haircut” to multiple generations.
He had many joys such as hunting, fishing, gardening, but most of all he enjoyed his artwork. He started out by doing the artwork for his high school yearbook and continued drawing and painting, entering artwork in the Grant County fair and receiving several awards. Ramon was a devoted husband to his wife Peggy of 59 years, who together provided their 3 children with endless love.
He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy of the family home; two sons, Ray Gomez and wife Marlisa of Albuquerque; Mark Gomez and wife Catherine of Silver City; one daughter, Carla Bustillos and husband Andrew of Tijeras, NM; nine grandchildren, Christina Solberg and husband Jason, Mark Gomez, Adam Gomez, Monica Gomez, Lorenzo Gomez, Adriana Bustillos, Andrew Bustillos, Alesandra Bustillos, and Ashley Bustillos; two great-grandchildren, Teneal and Noel Solberg; his sister, Elsie Garcia of Silver City; also numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Felipe Gomez; two sisters, Bertha Nañez and Juanita Catañeda; brother in-law, Steve Garcia.
Visitation will be Wednesday, September 16th from 5:30-6pm at Terrazas Funeral Chapels. The holy rosary being recited by Deacon Bill Holguin to begin at 6pm.
The funeral liturgy will be celebrated on Thursday, September 17th at 10am at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Father Bartholomew Anozie officiating.
Concluding service and interment will follow at St. Vincent Catholic cemetery.
Pallbearers are Mark Gomez Sr., Mark Gomez Jr., Ray Gomez, Lorenzo Gomez, Andrew Bustillos Sr., Andrew Bustillos Jr., and Jason Solberg.
