Katy grew up in Deming and graduated from Deming High School in 1947. Then she attended New Mexico Teacher’s College (now Western New Mexico University) in Silver City. It was there that she met the love of her life, a lanky WWII Navy veteran, Russell (Rusty) Coleman Hofacket. Married in August of 1949, they lived in Miami Arizona for one year and moved back to town in 1950. There they had three children, Michael (Mike) Lewis, Rickmond Ed (who survived only a few weeks), and Paula Ree.
As a coach’s wife, she attended Wildcat sporting events all her life. Even after Rusty’s retirement, she had numerous events in which her grandchildren were active. Her love for the Wildcats and her community was infectious and spread through her family and friends. She also loved her job at the New Mexico State Highway department and retired after 24 years in 1990.
Katy was active in many civic and charitable organizations including the Deming-Luna County Mimbres Museum, Deming Hospice, the Hospital Auxiliary, and several City and County committees. She was a member of Xi Beta Gamma chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Golden Gossip, and the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed playing bridge, politics, volunteering, reading, traveling, and spending time with her large family and her numerous friends.
Upon completing her earthy journey, Katy joined in a heavenly celebration with her parents, her brother Jack Spratt Lewis and his wife Margie (Thompson), her sister Betty Ruth and husband Robert (Bob) Hornbeck, her son Rickmond, and her lifelong love and husband, Rusty.
She is survived by her daughter, Paula Weber and her husband Karl (Fritz) of Baldwin, MD and their children, Patricia (Patti) Weber and her husband Derrick Williams of Towson, MD, Russell (Rus) Weber and wife Amanda of Churchville, MD with their sons, Tristan and Gracyn; son, Mike Hofacket and wife Vicki (Buss) with their children Leandra Stewart and husband William (Will) and daughter Aerona and son Calum, Jarod Hofacket and his wife Lani (Stoltzfus) with their sons, Charlie, Sam and Jack, Brandon Hofacket and his wife Stephanie (Busch) with their daughter, Wren and son, Waylon Ender, Adriana Allen and her husband, Justin with their daughters, Meredeth and Brooklyn, sons, Coleman and J. Hollis.
In addition to her children, grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren, she is survived by many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, cousins, friends and acquaintances, and the exceptionally fine folks from At-Home Personal Care.
Services will be held at First United Methodist Church on Saturday October 21, 2017 at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, Reverend David Okerberg officiating. Concluding services and interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Katy would appreciate donations to Deming-Luna County Mimbres Museum.
