It is with a sorrowful heart that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Juanita M. Maldonado on April 17, 2020 in Las Cruces, NM. Juanita was born on October 20, 1926 in Gila, NM to Santos and Jose Medrano. Juanita enjoyed growing up in the country and spending time with her family. Her greatest love was when she met her husband, Guillermo G. Maldonado whom she was married to for sixty-nine years; and the birth of her four children. In her early years, Juanita loved to sew and cook, but what her family remembers most was her enjoyment for music—especially when she would listen to Bill Acosta on KSIL and her favorite Al Hurricane hits. Those who knew Juanita recall her kind and warm personality, which many people were drawn to during her years as an employee at Rascos and as a cafeteria cook at Sixth Street Elementary School in the Silver Consolidated School District. Throughout her life, Juanita was devoted to the St. Vincent Catholic Church in Silver City. She shared the love of baseball with her family, which stemmed from watching her grandchildren who played the sport. In her most recent years, some of Juanita’s favorite past times were either watching Family Feud or an Arizona Diamondbacks game on TV, mastering a daily word search, and enjoying a green chile cheeseburger and chicken nuggets from McDonald’s.

Juanita was preceded in death by her husband, Guillermo G. Maldonado, her son, Guillermo M. Maldonado, and Grandson Jonathan Maldonado. She is survived by her three daughters Velia Luna (Stan) of Albuquerque, NM; Gloria Abeyta (Pete) of Silver City, NM; and Bertha Saenz (Jesus) of Deming, NM; daughter-in-law, Nancy Maldonado of Arenas Valley, NM. Her two sisters, Helen Monje of Gila, NM and Natalia Trujillo (Benny) of Las Cruces, NM. Her grandchildren Edith Abeyta, Jason Abeyta, Tobias Luna, Guillermo M. Maldonado III, Camille Maldonado, Charolette Saenz, and Dominic Saenz. Great Grandchildren include Amberley Luna, Nathan Chavez, Jeremy Abeyta, Adrian Abeyta, Enoch Rivera, and Lucas Rivera.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic, the funeral services are reserved for the immediate family. We will celebrate Juanita’s life on Wednesday, April 29, 2020 with the viewing beginning at 10:00am and a rosary being recited by Deacon Bill Holguin at 11:00am at Terrazas Funeral Chapel, followed by a mass at 1:00pm to celebrate her life at San Ysidro Catholic Church in Gila, NM. Juanita will be laid to rest at the Maldonado Family Cemetery in Gila, NM. Pallbearers will be Pete Jason Abeyta, Tobias Luna, Guillermo Maldonado III, Dominic Saenz, Nathan Chavez, and Jeremy Abeyta. Honorary pallbearers will be the rest of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The family requests your prayers from afar and will invite family and friends to celebrate Juanita’s life, together, at a later
