
He passed away on Friday, February 28, 2020. He was surrounded by his loving family and died while we were praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet.
He joined the National Guard when he was 17 yrs. old and was activated to go to the Korean War; but it was decided to keep them in Fort Bliss because of the many casualties; so, they kept them to train officers in the artillery. He worked for the mines starting for Kennecott Copper Mining Co. and then Phelps Dodge. He worked at the smelter in Hurley as a Craneman and later moved to work at the Acid Plant. He would take care of the soda machines at the smelter and acid plant to sponsor Lulac scholarships. He was a treasurer for the Local 890 Steelworkers union. He loved to fish as it cost him his right arm in a boating accident 32 years ago at a Bass tournament, yet he bought a boat and continued to fish. He was an avid music lover, Dodger fan, loved his Yorkie “Kookie”. He adored all his grandchildren. He was a player and coach for the fast pitch baseball teams in Hurley. He was a lector at Infant Jesus Shrine and helped with the bereavement dinners, and taking communion to the homebound. He was a cursillista and a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.
In 1955, he married Mary Lou Garcia and they had three sons, Joe (Merlinda), Gilbert (Catalina), and Arthur (Rosemary); five grandchildren, Arlene, Arthur John Jr., Jennifer, Javier, and LeAnn; eleven great grandchildren; his sister, Mary Eva Gomez of Pico Rivera, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Bill Gutierrez.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 5th from 5-6pm at Terrazas Funeral Chapels with the holy rosary being recited by his son Deacon Art Gutierrez to begin at 6pm. The funeral liturgy will be celebrated on Friday, Marth 6th at 9:30am at Hurley Infant Shrine with Father Casmir Anozie officiating. Concluding service and interment will follow at Fort Bayard National cemetery. Pallbearers will be Javier Gutierrez, Arthur John Gutierrez Jr., Noah Spurgeon, Jeremy Spurgeon, Jennifer Botts, Gabriel Bustillos, and Eugene Muñoz Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Tommy Ryan, nephew, John Lawrence Gutierrez, Danny Gomez, Sammy Duran, Manuel (Meme) Martinez, Tony Guy Beltran, Sean Bustillos, Gabriel Ramos, Manuel Dominguez, Eddy Garcia and all his Compas and Comadres.
