Carmen Larue Spilsbury

Carmen Larue Spilsbury, 90, a resident of Silver City, NM entered eternal rest Monday, May 11, 2020 at Fort Bayard Medical Center. She was born March 15, 1930 in Colonia Chuichupa, Mexico to Leland Martineau and Irene Brown Martineau.

Carmen always had a love of learning and teaching, she taught school to children from grades 1 through 8 in a one room schoolhouse in Mexico for many years. She attended Brigham Young University in Provo, UT where she also married and started her family. She dedicated herself to many children’s education and aside from regular curriculum such as arithmetic and spelling she self-educated herself on such subjects such as Latin and Greek and Roman mythologies and Art History so she could teach those subjects to her students as well.

She was at one time an avid golfer and won many tournaments. She loved to dance, was on a bowling team and was an excellent seamstress, crocheted, knitted and made quilts. She enjoyed seeing how things worked and could take apart things like sewing machines, lamps, and irons and repaired them. Carmen was generous and helpful to many in need.

Carmen involved herself in helping manage charitable organizations and fund raisers for community projects. She was a strong and spirited woman and she will be missed.


She is survived by her son, Casey Spilsbury (Lynell) of Rio Rancho, NM; three daughters, Shelly Ford of Houston, TX; Jackie Spilsbury of El Paso, TX; Diane Johnson (Rex R. Jr.) of Silver City; thirteen grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; five brothers, Ray Martineau (Shirleen) of Salt Lake, UT; Reed Martineau (Gloria) of Salt Lake, UT; Bill Martineau of Vernon, UT; Kent Martineau (Cheryl) of Salt Lake, UT; Knolton Martineau of Alberta, Canada; one sister, Kathryn Merrill (Vern) of Douglas, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Hyrum Kelly Spilsbury (2004).

Visitation will be Thursday, May 14th from 2-4pm at Terrazas Funeral Chapels. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic limit of 5 people and masks are required.

A Graveside service will take place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery where she will be laid to rest at 11am on Friday, May 15th with Bishop Randall Roth officiating.
