He was born in Ames, Iowa on May 26, 1957 to Riley Schaeffer and Peg (Marguerite) Cummins. Although his family lived and travelled abroad, Brian spent much of his childhood in Bloomington, Indiana. In his early years, he lived and travelled in Greece, Israel and Switzerland. He attended various schools both in America and abroad. Brian graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Science, and in 1994, he graduated from New Mexico State University with a Master degree in Education.
During his teaching career, Brian touched the lives of countless children through his caring nature and high standards that he set for his students in Arizona and New Mexico. He served on several educational committees and especially enjoyed the Deming Public Schools science committee in which he developed the district’s science fair manual.
Brian loved God, his family, his friends and the Green Bay Packers- in that order! He enjoyed being in the mountains, the wilderness and fresh, open spaces. Whenever he could, Brian would take his family out for a day trip or camping alongside a river with a warm campfire. He also had a keen interest in technology. He wrote numerous e-books and created many online businesses.
Brian was always up for a new joke or friendly debate. He would generously share advise, help others, be a listening ear, or just be there when you needed him. He was always learning and especially loved history and politics. He thought “outside the box” and had a unique sense of humor and quick wit.
Although we sorely miss him now and he left us too soon, we have peace and joy knowing that we will see him again in Heaven.
Brian’s Celebration of Life services are this Saturday, January 7, at 10 am at the First Baptist Church in Deming, NM.
