She was born July 7, 1943, in La Union, NM to Carlos Rios and Paula Archuleta Rios. In her hometown of La Union, she was fondly known as “Guera” and “Bertie.” She attended Gadsden High School and worked at White Sands Missile Range before moving to Silver City in 1966. She attended and graduated from WNMU and became a member of the faculty in 1979. She was a distinguished member of the WNMU faculty for 25 years where she received many accolades and was recognized as Professor Emeritus of the Applied Technology Department.
She enjoyed teaching and helped many students throughout the years. She was well known for her sense of humor and kindness. She loved Mexican music especially Mariachis. She enjoyed texting prayers and jokes to all on her special contact list. She always made sure everyone was taken care of and could cook like no other. She was a strong woman of faith. She loved deeply and cherished all of her grandchildren giving them daily advice and sharing her wisdom. She was their biggest fan and could always be found cheering them on at all of their events. She was a good wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Roberto Benavidez; her three children, Rene (Alexis) Benavidez of Henderson, Nevada; Sandra (Mike) Montoya; and Rebecca Benavidez of Silver City; her grandchildren, Rhyker and D’artanian Benavidez, Alex Lopez, Daviana and Anthony Montoya, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Carlos A. and Edmundo Rios; one sister, Lydia Avalos; a special cousin Guillermo (Memo) Rios; and granddaughter Angelica Montoya.
Visitation will be Thursday, December 10th from 5-6pm at St. Francis Newman Center with the holy rosary being recited by Deacon Art Gutierrez to begin at 6pm.
The funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, December 11th also at St. Francis Newman Center with Father Bartholomew Ezenwelem officiating.
Concluding service and interment will follow at Memory Lane Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Alex Lopez, Anthony Montoya, David Rios, Roland Avalos, Marcos Estrada, Bobby Espinoza.
