DEMING - City of Deming officials will be holding a Town Hall Meeting Wednesday June 21st from 5-6p.m. at the Andres Silva Center 119 East Pine Street. Topics discussed will be the two different west side revitalization developments. First, Allsup’s Convenience Store and secondly the City of Deming’s incubator project. City officials told Deming Radio News that a representative of Allsup’s will be available to talk to the public and answer questions. The city said that the public’s opinion is important, and citizen’s thoughts and input is crucial to ensure that they create a vibrant and sustainable community that meets the needs of local citizens. The public is invited to attend and share your voice. DEMING – County Clerk Berenda McWright told Deming Radio News that all persons conducting business in Luna County, but outside the incorporated boundaries of Deming and Columbus, that they must renew their business registration or apply for a new business registration on or before June 30th. Luna County ordinance #5 provides for a penalty of $25.00 per month and/or a 90-day jail sentence and/or $300.00 fine for each violation. Persons engaged solely in farming or ranching or whose annual gross sales does not exceed $500.00 are exempt from the ordinance. Call the County Clerk’s Office at 546-0491 for further information. DEMING – Luna County is working on the 2025-29 infrastructure Capital Improvement plan and is seeking input from the public. A local Infrastructure Capital Improvement Plan or ICIP, is a plan that establishes planning priorities for anticipated capital projects. The state coordinated ICIP process encourages entities to plan for the development of capital improvements so that they do not find themselves in emergency situations, but can plan for, fund and develop infrastructure at a pace that sustains their activities. All interested people are invited to submit their project ideas to provide supporting data and testimony, photos and other pertinent information at the work session that will be held on July 27th at 4 p.m. For additional information, call the County Clerk’s office at 575-546-04961. DEMING - A Deming resident currently held at the Doña Ana County Detention Center will serve a 9-year prison sentence and is subject to deportation during or following his sentence after pleading guilty last September to smuggling firearms into Mexico. The Deming Headlight* reported that Jesus Barron, age 35, of Deming, was charged with heading a smuggling ring involving his wife and four residents of Palomas, Mexico. Barron pleaded guilty in September to a single count of conspiracy, six counts of making a false statement in the acquisition of a firearm and one count of smuggling goods from the United States. In a plea agreement, Barron admitted to paying his former wife, Ana Barron, and four others to purchase firearms between January and June 2021, although the operation allegedly was active going back to 2018. In June 2021, federal law enforcement caught on to the operation after Mexican authorities seized seven assault-style rifles from an SUV at a checkpoint. The seized weapons, which had been purchased in Las Cruces, led ATF officers to others whom were suspected of making straw purchases for organized crime organizations in Mexico. The investigation later found purchases of a wide variety of weapons in Deming and Silver City as well as Las Cruces that were never recovered. Other persons arrested in the case stated that after making the purchases they would run them to the Barrons’ home in Deming, identifying Jesus Barron as the one in charge of the operation. *story taken from Deming Headlight (used with permission) DEMING – The Luna County Board of Commissioners will be holding a Special Meeting Thursday June 8th. Service awards will be awarded to Kristen Gallegos for 5 years service at the Assessor’s Office, Amy Perea for 5 years at the Detention Center and Leslie Nabours for 15 years at the County Clerk’s office. Special Recognition will be given to Teresa Seats for 11 years at the Starmax Entertainment complex. Laura Garcia will be retiring from the Sheriff’s Department after 25 years’ service and will be honored for her service to the community. The new business to be discussed and voted on includes budget procurements, certification of fixed assets, and designation of polling places for the 2024 and 2025 elections. The Commission will also announce the next “County College” event set for Thursday June 22nd at 5:30 pm also at the Courthouse. The topic to be discussed will be the road department. The county offices will be closed Monday June 19th in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day. In police reports: The Smoke Shop on the corner of Silver and Spruce Street was burglarized, according to the police report, $1,600 in tobacco and jewelry was stolen. A window on a residence in the 1300 block of Santa Catalina was broken, the damage estimate was listed as $500. A Deming City owned vehicle was damaged while parked in the 300 block of South Gold Street. City officials said that the fuel tank was damaged, and it will cost the city about $150 to repair it. DEMING – New Mexico’s Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced last week that W. Troy Weisler will be the next New Mexico State Police Chief. Weisler began his career with the State Police while stationed here in Deming as a patrol officer in 2002. He succeeds Tim Johnson who is retiring after 23 years on the force. Chief Weisler now commands a force of over 700 officers throughout New Mexico. Over his career, Chief Weisler has served the state as a State Police patrol officer, investigative officer, research and narcotics roles around the state. In police reports: $3,200 in jewelry was reported taken from a residence on South Diamond. A 1998 Dodge pickup was taken from a residence on South 8th. The vehicle’s value was listed as $2,500. On Thursday June 1st, at about 1 a.m., Deming Police received a 911 call about a 36-year-old Deming male being shot with a shotgun. The shooting occurred in the 2600 block of South Silver Street. Deming Police Chief Clint Hogan told Deming Radio news that the victim was flown to an El Paso trauma hospital and the current condition is unknown. The case will continue to be investigated by the police department, and they are asking for the public’s assistance in finding the person or persons involved in this shooting.
