Five graduating seniors attending schools Deming, will be selected and awarded $1,000 each to use for tuition, housing, or books and materials needed for their program of study.

Students pursuing a 4-year, 2-year, or certificate program at an accredited university or college are eligible.

The deadline to apply is today, (April 1, 2024,) before midnight!

The renewable energy company will be awarding $1,000, one-time scholarships to up to 135 graduating high school seniors across the United States who have an interest in renewable energy or STEM-related careers.

WNMU Board of Regents Meet, Vote to Maintain Current Tuition Rate

SILVER CITY, NM – The Western New Mexico University Board of Regents met on Thursday, March 28 on campus in Silver City. Present at the meeting were Regent President Dr. Mary Hotvedt, Vice President Dr. Lyndon Haviland, Student Regent and Secretary Treasurer Trent Jones and Regent Dal Moellenberg.

WNMU President Dr. Joseph Shepard ceded some of his time to Faculty Senate President Scott Smith, who reported that currently 70% of university classes are taught online, while 20% are taught face-to-face, and 10% are taught in a hybrid format. The faculty are forming a committee to assess whether the number and kind of face-to-face classes are appropriately meeting student needs.

Staff Senate President Adele Springer and Associated Students of WNMU President Elizabeth Gonzales also reported on recent activities in their areas.

In his report to the board, President Shepard noted that the university is up 24% in applications over the same time last year.

The regents heard an update on the policy and procedure review process from Director of Professional Development Bobbi Dodson. Dodson indicated that the review committee is examining approximately 130 documents from across the university and is assessing them for consistency and for their alignment with HLC requirements. She said that the committee’s work should be completed by June 2024.

Under old business, the board heard a summary of the 2022-2023 financial year audit report from auditor Scott Peck and Vice President of Business Affairs Kelley Riddle. The auditors examined a sample of the university’s financial transactions, and while there were some minor findings, the audit was largely sound. The board voted unanimously to accept the audit report.

Under new business, the board voted unanimously to accept a recommendation from the Associated Students of WNMU to adjust student fees, resulting in an overall reduction of the amount students will pay in fees each semester.

The board also voted unanimously to accept a recommendation from President Shepard and Vice President Riddle to keep tuition at its present rate for the coming academic year. Shepard noted the WNMU is likely the only university in the state to have an overall reduction in combined tuition and fees this year.

Also under new business, the board voted unanimously to accept a proclamation naming the new WNMU Deming center the John Arthur and Janette Smith Educational Center.

The Board of Regents will next meet on April 29, 2024.

DEMING - The public is invited to attend an educational program from the Luna County Manager’s Office called the Luna County Citizen’s College.

On the 4th week of each month, Luna County will host a forum where Luna County staff will give a brief presentation on an aspect or office run by Luna County.

The presentation will include an explanation of applicable statutes, rules, regulations and ordinances as well as a description of the day-to-to operations of that office.

Citizens will also be afforded an open forum to ask questions regarding the topic and to make general comments about county operations.

The next session will be held in the Luna County Commission Chambers on Thursday March 28th, starting at 5:30 p.m.

The topic will be the understanding the Luna County Parents as Teachers program.

$23.3 Million roadway rehabilitation project on I-10 West of Lordsburg

LORDSBURG - The New Mexico Department of Transportation District One office in cooperation with Mountain States Constructors, Inc. (Contractor) is excited to announce the $23.3M upcoming roadway rehabilitation project on Interstate 10 from milepost 0 (Arizona Stateline) to milepost 15 (Gary) in Hidalgo County.

Beginning Monday, April 1, 2024, and lasting approximately 200 working days drivers can expect various daytime lane closures on both the eastbound and westbound lanes as needed for milling and paving operations. The contractor’s hours of operation will be from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Overnight lanes closures may be in place for the replacement of the guardrail and concrete wall barrier.

Deming Woman Wanted for Arson Surrenders

DEMING - On Thursday March 21st at about 10:30am, Brittni Jasso turned herself into the Luna County Magistrate Court for the Felony Arson and Criminal Damage to property warrant that was issued for her arrest.

The warrant was from the arson committed at 1408 West Hickory Street in Deming on Wednesday March 20th.

Jasso was seen by the Magistrate Court Judge who released her on her own recognizance.

Jasso is no longer wanted by law enforcement.

Interim Police Chief Jose Montoya wished to thank the public for the assistance and efforts given the department in this case.

On March 20th, the Deming Police Department responded to a distress call reporting a structure fire at 1408 W. Hickory St. Upon arrival, officers were met with a harrowing sight as flames engulfed a residence.

Fortunately, the homeowner and his canine companion were found safe.

The Deming Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division (CID), in collaboration with the New Mexico State Fire Marshal, promptly initiated an investigation into the incident. Their findings pointed to arson as the cause of the blaze.

Deming City Council to Hold Special Session This morning to Discuss Appointment of Police Chief

DEMING - The Deming City Council has announced a special session scheduled for Monday, March 25th, at 9 am, to convene at the Andres Silva Conference Center located at 119 East Pine. In addition to the in-person gathering, the meeting will be accessible online via GoToMeeting. Access details are provided on the City's official website, cityofdeming.org.

According to the City's Legal Notice, the primary agenda item for the session is to enter into a closed or executive session to deliberate on the appointment of the Chief of Police for the City. Presently, the role is being temporarily filled by Interim Police Chief Jose Montoya.

The official agenda, inclusive of the closed session regarding the Chief of Police appointment, is accessible on the City's website for public review.

High winds expected with blowing dust

Travel Advisory for Southwest New Mexico

DEMING - The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) will be monitoring roadway conditions with law enforcement as high wind advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) on March 22, 2024, impacts attached from NWS with Press Release. On Sunday, March 24, 2024, the NWS is forecasting very strong winds from 35 to 45 mph with gusts from 55 to 70 mph. The I-10 corridor could see low visibilities from blowing dust, travel could be difficult for high profile vehicles.

The NMDOT would like to remind the traveling public, blowing dust can escalate to blinding dust storms as they move quickly through remote areas. If you must travel, we recommend you monitor local forecast conditions prior to starting your trip and visit our web site as roadway conditions may change quickly throughout New Mexico.

Roadway advisories will be posted on www.nmroads.com, or by calling 511. If you are approaching a dust storm or caught in a dust storm, please follow the guidelines below to help you stay safe.

Avoid driving into or through a dust storm.
Do not wait until poor visibility makes it difficult to safely pull off the roadway — do it as soon as possible. Completely exit the highway if you can.
If you encounter a dust storm, check traffic immediately around your vehicle (front, back and to the side) and begin slowing down.
Do not stop in the roadway; pull completely out of the travel lanes and as far onto the right shoulder as possible.
Stop the vehicle in a position ensuring it is a safe distance from the main roadway and away from where other vehicles may travel.
Turn off all vehicle lights, including your emergency flashers.
Set your emergency brake and take your foot off the brake.
Stay in the vehicle with your seat belts buckled and wait for the storm to pass.
Drivers of high-profile vehicles should be especially aware of changing weather conditions and travel at reduced speeds.
