Deming Animal Guardians Honors the late Bob Barker

DEMING - The following is a message from the Deming Animal Guardians. Deming/Luna County's no-kill shelter.

"Deming Animal Guardians and DAGSHIP Rescue owe a huge debt of gratitude to the late Bob Barker's DJ&T Foundation, an animal charity he began to honor his wife (Dorothy Jo) and mother.

For a number of years DAG received spay/neuter funding from them. When the Rescue began one of our first grants was from the DJ&T Foundation to purchase our current "office building", a refurbished trailer.

Their grants also helped us to expand the number of kennels and add solar to reduce utility costs.

We are so honored to have had this association for many years. RIP, Mr. Barker."

Local Veterans to Receive PACT Act Information

DEMING - In August of 2022, President Biden signed into law the PACT act. A new law that expanded VA health care and benefits for Veterans exposed to burn pits, agent orange and other toxic substances.

The act added to the list of health conditions that are assumed or presumed are caused by exposure to substances.

U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez, along with representatives from the Veteran’s Services, will be in Deming Tuesday September 5th from three to 7 p.m. to talk to locals about the PACT act.

The public is invited to join the VA and Representative Vasquez for a presentation about the PACT Act that expanded health care benefits to veterans exposed to toxic substances while in service.

Special Guests will be Matthew McGahran, Assistant Director of New Mexico Veteran’s Health Care Services, Scott Lajiness, Albuquerque RO Management Analyst and Miguel Martinez, Veteran Service Officer with the Department of Veterans Services.

Again, the meeting will be Tuesday September 5th from 3 until 7pm at the Mimbres Valley Learning Center 2300 East Pine Street in Deming.

The meeting is open to the public.

September show at Deming Art Center

DEMING - “Black and White, It Don’t Lie,” is the title of the September exhibit at the Deming Art Center.

It is presented by the Mimbres Photography Alliance, which consists of four award-winning, experienced photographers.

The choice of Black and White for this exhibition reflects their respect for the very roots of photography, using light, shadow, tone, and texture to capture the world around them.

There will be a time to meet the photographers on Sunday, September 3rd from 1PM- 3PM.
The exhibit will be on display from September 2 to the 29th.

The Deming Art Center is located at 100 S. Gold, Deming, NM, and regular hours are Mon-Fri 10AM-4PM and Saturday from 10AM – 1PM.

City Reminds Citizens of Potential Increase in Mosquitos

DEMING – In this month’s city bill, city officials included a letter in both English and Spanish reminding locals about the potential increase in mosquito population.

With the increase of rain recently, the city reminder said that there are several health risks such as transmission of disease including West Nile Virus.

City officials said that again this year, as in past Deming has contracted a professional entomologist to implement comprehensive mosquito management programs.

The programs will be designed not only to control and reduce the mosquito population within the city but also to decrease the incidences of mosquito-born diseases.

Mosquitos breed in standing water, making any undrained water source a potential mosquito nursery.

The public is reminded to drain standing water from flowerpots, buckets, birdbaths, and other containers in yards.

To help avoid mosquitos, avoid being outdoors during dawn and dusk. These are the times when mosquitos are most active.

Dress by wearing long sleeves and pants when outside.
Use an effective insect repellent.

Ensure doors and window screens are in good working condition.

City officials said controlling mosquito population requires a concerted effort from everyone.

Country Club Roadway Closure

DEMING – The City of Deming, as part of the Pedestrian Safety Improvements Project occurring on Country Club Road, will have various intersections and roadway closures with detours for the next 6 to 8 weeks.

Beginning Monday, August 28, 2023, lane closures and delays are expected on Country Club Road between Birch Street to Dona Ana Street. Lane closures will occur throughout the day, which will include a mobile traffic control signal. After working hours, the roadway will be reopened for use.

Alternate routes will be available for affected residents, public school busing routes and emergency services. Property access for residents will be available, please follow all directions of traffic control for your safety and the safety of the construction crew.

Monday Morning Semi Crash Closes Interstate 10

DEMING - Emergency crews responded to an overturned semi-truck in Deming.

According to the New Mexico Department of Transportation, the crash happened at 4 a.m. Monday on Interstate 10 westbound at milepost 57 closing all lanes of the interstate.

Traffic was being turned around at the Gage exit at milepost 62.

I-10 westbound at milepost 57 reopened at around 1 p.m. Monday afternoon.

When accidents or work crews are present, motorists are always asked to reduce your speed, obey posted signs, and watch for emergency personnel, and equipment.

Munoz is the winner of the Great American Duck Races

DEMING – The 44th Annual Great American Duck Race in Deming concluded Sunday with only one winner for both the wet and dry tracks.

Congratulations go out to Osvaldo Munoz, age 50, of Deming, for not only winning the dry track competition – just like he did last year, but this year he picked up the winning title on the wet track as well! Now he claims the $1,500 prize money for winning both competitions with a total of $3,000.

Duck Race board member Randi Morrow told Deming Radio news that over 950 racers competed for the prize money during the two days of racing.

She said that they estimate that over 15,000 people attended the event this year, in what vendors and participants are calling one of the best duck races in memory.

Morrow said that there were over 140 vendors set up at the Deming Duck Mart – an increase of about 40 over recent years – and many vendors said it was their most successful year ever.

Morrow wanted to thank her other board members, volunteers, and all the sponsors that all worked hard to again make the Great American Duck Races the success they are today.
