Deming Police Seek Public’s Assistance in Poncho’s Gas Station Robbery

DEMING – Deming police are continuing their investigation into the armed robbery of Poncho’s I-10 Chevron gas station at 500 East Railroad Blvd at about 9:30 on July 5th.

During the investigation, it was found that the suspect appeared to be a Hispanic male, possibly in his early 20’s with a thin build and longer black hair. The suspect was wearing a red bandana over his face but was observed as possibly having a beard.

The suspect brandished a black semi -automatic handgun and demanded that the cashier hand over the money. Detectives are still actively investigating this case and the Deming Police Department re-issued a media release Monday requesting further help from the public.

All Deming Public School Children Must Attend First Day of School August 1st

DEMING – The first day of school for the Deming Public School District is Tuesday, August 1st.

Per state guidance, a student that was enrolled but who does not attend school on the first day is considered a no show and will be dropped from the school’s enrollment.

If your child is not present on the first day of school, the school will drop them from enrollment. Then the parents or guardians will be required to re-register the child for the 2023-24 school year. They will have to do this by using the online registration portal, before the student can attend school. This must be done regardless if the child was a student in the prior school year.

Deming Celebrates Salsa on Saturday

DEMING – Salsa in Deming is a big deal. Everyone has their favorite. To celebrate this, Deming MainStreet will once again be hosting the 2023 Salsa Festival Extravaganza this Saturday July 29th.

All events during Saturday’s Salsa Festival will be held at the Luna County Courthouse Park 700 South Silver Street in Deming.

The entertainment for the event will be live music by the Badlands starting at 6 p.m. and going on until 10 p.m.
Traditional events at the park will include the Chile cookoff contest, salsa tasting, watermelon and jalapeno eating contests, and vendors.

There will be a dance performance by the Southwest Fine Arts Studio at the pavilion at 1 p.m. The cornhole tournament and a tortilla toss competition will be held on Poplar Street located behind the courthouse starting at 10 a.m.

For the adults, Boogies Brewery and Distillery will be set up on the south side of the Courthouse Park Pavilion.

All events are free to the public and will be held at the Luna County Courthouse Park will be from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Deming Police Respond to Burglary in Progress Call

DEMING – Early Monday morning, Deming police were called to the 200 block of South Tin Street, regarding a burglary in progress.

Deming Police Chief Clint Hogan told Deming Radio News that the call came into the department at about 6:25 a.m. Monday morning. When officers arrived at the home, they heard a shower running and music playing.

A motorcycle that was found to be stolen from Nevada, was found in the backyard of the residence.

Police heard a female inside the residence alerting the other occupant that officers were outside.
Officers set up a perimeter and began to order the occupants outside. After no response, the Special Response Team (SRT) was activated and upon arrival, the subjects opened the back door and surrendered without incident.

Manuel Lopez, age 40, and Serena Daniels, age 21, were both taken into custody and charged with burglary and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

The two are currently being held at the Luna County Detention Center.

Back to School Driver Safety Reminders

DEMING – School days are just around the corner and KDEM-FM and KOTS-AM along with all the Bravo Mic radio stations and the New Mexico Department of Transportation wants to remind the traveling public and pedestrians to think about traffic laws when in or near a school zone.

Driver Safety Reminders:

Slow down! Speed limits in school zones tend to be 5-10 miles per hour below the posted speed limit.
Respect the crossing guard. Always stop for crossing guards holding a stop sign.
Use extreme caution to avoid striking pedestrians, no matter who has the right of way.
Be aware children can be unpredictable. Watch for children darting out from between parked cars or from school buses.
Yield to pedestrians walking on a crosswalk.
Do NOT stop on a marked crosswalk or impede a pedestrian’s pathway at a marked intersection.
Drivers must stop behind a school bus with flashing lights. Never pass a stopped school bus. The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children entering or exiting the bus.

Pedestrian Safety Reminders:

Look both ways before crossing.
Do not expect a driver to yield to you if you are crossing on an unmarked pathway.
Wear brightly colored or reflective clothing if walking at night.
Only walk on designated sidewalks or pathways.
Never jump into traffic or attempt to walk on the road.

Motorists are asked to watch out for children when school is underway. When crossing an intersection, it is advised to look in both directions. KDEM and KOTS radios along with all the Bravo Mic stations want to encourage everyone to observe school zones.

County Commission to deal with Financial Reports & 2023-24 Budget

DEMING – The Luna County Board of County Commissioners will meet in special session Wednesday July 26th at 3 p.m.

The three commissioners will meet in the Commission Chambers on the third floor of the Historic Luna County Courthouse.

According to the official agenda, the new business of the meeting will be certification of the 4th quarter financial report and the 2023-24 budget adoption.

The board will accept motions and roll call votes on both items.

The next citizens college will talk about Luna County’s Strategic Plan. The forum will be held on Thursday July 27th at 5:30 p.m. at the courthouse.

The public is invited to the Special Session and the citizens college.
