National Work Zone Awareness Week Raps Up Friday

“You Play a Role in Work Zone Safety. Work With Us.”

DEMING* – The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) came together to celebrate National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) April 17-21. This event was held to remind drivers to pay attention as they approach, drive through or past work zones so both motorists and roadway workers remain safe.

The goal is to remind everyone to pay attention as they approach and drive through work zones so both motorists and roadway workers remain safe. This year’s National Work Zone Awareness Week theme was “You Play a Role in Work Zone Safety. Work With Us.”

In the El Paso District in 2022, there were 944 traffic crashes in work zones, resulting in 4 fatalities and 14 serious injuries. In El Paso, there were 710 traffic crashes in work zones, resulting in no fatalities and 12 serious injuries.  “Work zones present a different and sometimes challenging environment for drivers to navigate,” said TxDOT El Paso District Engineer Tomas Treviño. “Drivers may encounter uneven pavement, narrow lanes, concrete barriers, slow-moving heavy equipment and vehicles that make sudden stops.”

The vast majority of those killed in work zone crashes, 85%, were drivers or their passengers. Residents and the public are reminded to drive and work safely to help save lives.
“We remind you to watch out for road crews,” said NMDOT Interim District Engineer Aaron Chavarria. “The only protective gear they wear are reflective clothing, hard hats, and safety boots. Always follow detours and be mindful of construction area road signs. Road workers want to get home safe too. In the last three weeks alone, we have had five employees hit in a work zone.”

Tips for driving safely in a work zone:
  • Slow down. Speeding is one of the major causes of work zone crashes.
  • Don’t tailgate. Keep a safe distance between you, the car ahead of you, the construction workers, and their equipment.
  • Pay attention to signage
  • Stay alert and minimize distractions. No phones, loud music, makeup, or food.
  • Be patient and stay calm.

The NMDOT and TxDOT is committed to the safety of the traveling public and appreciates your cooperation during roadway construction zones. For updated information visit: New Mexico Department of Transportation at www.nmroads.com or call 511 or 1-800-432-4269.

DEMING – The  Deming High School was put on lockdown Thursday morning after the administration received a safety concern from a student of a possible gun on campus.

The facts of the situation are as follows: During a routine safety drug sweep of the Deming High School campus, the school was placed in ‘shelter-in-place.’ Deming Public Schools routinely perform safety drug sweeps at our schools using a K-9 unit and, during any sweep the school will shelter-in-place to insure no one leaves the campus.

During today’s sweep, several students began to text one another about a gun on school grounds. Another student reported the safety concern to an adult in the building and the school was immediately placed in lockdown, along with surrounding buildings.

Local law enforcement was called to assist. No gun or weapons were found on campus.

The administration said that, Student safety is our first priority. Deming Public Schools (DPS) takes all allegations, threats, and reports of safety concerns very seriously and fully investigates them.
During an active investigation DPS will only share information that we can legally disclose and will share the information when it will not cause another safety concern for our students.

A news release from the Deming Public Schools urges parents and guardians to talk with your children about false reports, unsubstantiated allegations, and spreading rumors. Please urge them to use their best judgement when sharing District news. Misinformation and rumors create chaos and fear that disrupts everyone’s education and sense of safety for the entire community.

Deming Officer and School Resource officer Quezada addressed those in attendance Saturday afternoon.

DEMING – The City of Deming held a public safety block party in the 300 block of South Silver Street last Saturday.

There were displays from various law enforcement, as well as the city fire and ambulance.

City officials said that they hope to have similar events in the future.  Public Safety Day was an important opportunity to recognize and celebrate the brave first responders who put their lives on the line daily to keep our communities safe. This educational and fun event featured various interactive activities for all ages. From “Detective for a Day” to fire safety awareness, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

The “Detective for a Day” activity allowed participants to experience what it feels like to be a detective by going through a pretend crime scene and analyzing evidence. Participants also explored a faux 911 dispatch center and learned more about public safety operations while understanding when and why we call 911.
Through these activities, children and adults alike can gain valuable knowledge about safety skills they can use in their everyday lives.

Other activities included fire safety awareness, car seat installation demonstrations, and local law enforcement officers' drug prevention and internet safety presentations. In addition, the event provided hot dogs and drinks.
Mayor Benny Jasso said, “We wanted the community to come out and have fun while learning about important public safety topics." "This was an excellent chance for families to get together and engage in interactive activities that will help them stay safe in day-to-day life."

It was a great weather day, and events were well attended.  Deming Radio News was provided with a few photos of the event.
