Early voting for November 7th election ends on Saturday

DEMING - Early voting for the November 7th election is almost over. Voters have until Saturday to cast their ballots in person or by mail.

Voters can choose from two early voting locations: the Mimbres Valley Learning Center at 2300 East Pine Street or the Luna County Clerk’s office at 700 South Silver Ave. Early voting at the Learning Center ends on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., while early voting at the Clerk’s office ends on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Voters can also mail their absentee ballots or deposit them in secure drop boxes located in front of the Historic Luna County Courthouse, the Deming Fire Department, and the Learning Center.

On the ballot are several local races and issues, including:

Deming’s Mayor
Two Deming City Councilor positions
The Columbus Village Mayor
Village of Columbus Trustee
Village of Columbus Municipal Judge
Deming Public Schools Board Members for District 3, 4 and 5
Two Deming Soil and Water Conservation Board Supervisor positions
The renewal of the existing Deming Public School’s two-mill levy bond

The two-mill levy bond has been on the books for over 30 years and must be renewed every few years or the funding decreases for the school system.

This is an important election that will affect the future of our community. We encourage all eligible voters to exercise their right and responsibility to vote.

DEMING – Kristy Martinez, age 42, of Las Cruces, NM, was arrested on a 6th Judicial District court warrant for failure to comply with conditions of release… Manuel Galaz, age 31, of Palomas, Mexico, was arrested for receiving or transferring a stolen motor vehicle, improper use of registration, no driver’s license, expired registration, and no insurance… Alfred Ventura, age 61, was arrested on a Luna County Magistrate court warrant for failure to appear… Jeffrey Patterson, age 64, was arrested for battery on a peace officer, resisting, evading or obstructing an officer… Tracy Bleacher, age 60, from Albuquerque, NM, was arrested for battery… Brianna Sosa, age 28, was arrested for disorderly conduct… Toni Yadon, age 34, was arrested on a Grant County Magistrate court warrant for failure to comply with conditions of release, shoplifting and on an Adult Probation and Parole warrant for parole violations… Jackie Paul, age 34, of Las Cruces, was arrested for two counts of disorderly conduct, and obstruction of movement of traffic… Anthony Lucero, age 45, was arrested on a Luna County Magistrate warrant for failure to appear… Carlos Lugo, age 20, was arrested on a Deming Municipal court warrant for failure to pay fines… Jessica Arledge, age 21, was arrested for battery against a household member, causing criminal damage to property of a household member… Andres Rodriguez, age 34, was arrested on a Deming Municipal Court warrant for failure to appear… Angel Zamora, age 20, was arrested for aggravated assault on a Peace Officer… Dominick Dominguez, age 20, was arrested on a 6th Judicial District court warrant for failure to appear, and interference with officers… Alfonso, age 21 was arrested for possession of a controlled substances – methamphetamines, possession of drug paraphernalia, no driver’s license, and a traffic offense.

In juvenile reports, a 14-year-old female was cited into court for fighting at Red Mountain Middle School.

In police reports:
A burglary was reported in the 400 block of South Silver Street after a wallet and camera with a value of $110 were reported taken.

A 1999 Chevy Silverado valued at $4,000 was taken from an RV park on East Pine Street.

A 62-year-old male from Columbus was a victim of fraud after he cashed a bad check for $250.

Deming Headlight wins General Excellence Award

DEMING - The New Mexico Press Association recognized the best of New Mexico’s newspaper writing, photography and advertising at the Better Newspaper Contest Banquet on Saturday in Albuquerque.

The Deming Headlight won the General Excellence award for its division, along with other newspapers such as Albuquerque Journal, Roswell Daily Record, and Taos News.

The NMPA 114th Annual Convention handed out the awards after judging the contest by the Arizona Newspaper Association.

The Deming Headlight staff also won awards in various categories.

Headlight Editor Algernon D’Ammassa received First Place for Editorials and for feature writing and Second Place for Environmental or Agricultural writing.

Sportswriter Billy Armendariz won First Place for Sports Columns and Best Sports Coverage.

Anna Loya earned Second Place for Columns.

Deming Wildcats to host Belen Eagles in State 5A Football Championships

DEMING - The Deming Wildcats football team will compete in the State 5A Football Championships this Friday. The Wildcats will host the defending champions, the Belen Eagles, at 7 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.

The Wildcats have a record of 7-3 this season, with 3 wins in their district. They have scored 222 points and allowed 137 points in their 10 games. They are led by junior quarterback Ryan Alfaro, who has thrown for 1,467 yards and 18 touchdowns, and leads the team in rushing with 1,021 yards and 14 touchdowns.

The Eagles have a record of 1 and 9 this season, they are led by senior quarterback Senior Hunter Garcia. Garcia ranks 42%, with 4 touchdown passes for the season. Last Year the Eagles went 2 and 9 overall 1 and 2 in District.

The winner will advance to the second round of the tournament.

Arrest Made in Recent Homicide Case

DEMING - In the early morning hours of October 23rd, a Deming woman found her husband, 37-year-old Jose Arroyo, shot to death in the front yard of a residence on East Jarvis Street in Deming.

Arroyo had failed to return home as expected after visiting the residence where an argument broke out. He had called his wife during the altercation, assuring her that he would be home soon. His wife reported hearing the argument in the background during their phone conversation.

When Arroyo did not show up, his worried wife went to the East Jarvis residence where she made the grim discovery.

Deming Police Chief Clint Hogan confirmed to Deming Radio News that a gunman shot Arroyo multiple times with a handgun.

Hogan told Deming Radio News that police arrested the suspect in Thatcher, AZ on October 26th, for aggravated assault on a household member. He is currently being held in Safford Arizona at the Graham County Detention Center.

Deming Investigators went to Safford to interrogate 33-year-old Edgar Ozuna, of Safford where he confessed to the murder.

A judge issued an arrest warrant for the homicide by the 6th Judicial District Court in Luna County. Ozuna is currently awaiting extradition back to Deming to stand trial for the homicide.

City of Deming Police Department Welcomes New Officer

DEMING - The City of Deming Police Department is excited to welcome its newest member, Officer Timothy Sanchez. Born and raised in Deming, Officer Sanchez’s deep love for the community and dedication to maintaining its safety are commendable.

Officer Sanchez will soon be heading to the academy for training, further equipping him to serve and protect the city he calls home. Prior to joining the police force, Sanchez served the city as a lifeguard, demonstrating his commitment to public service from an early age.

Police Chief Clint Hogan expressed his enthusiasm about the new addition to the team in an interview with Deming Radio News. The entire department is looking forward to seeing Officer Sanchez’s contributions to the community.

Illegal Butchering of Pregnant Cow Sparks Investigation in Luna County

DEMING - A shocking act of animal cruelty has been reported near Black Mountain, northwest of Deming. A cow, which was with calf, was illegally killed and butchered. Tragically, the unborn calf also lost its life in this heinous crime.

The incident was reported to the Luna County Sheriff’s Department on October 19th. The financial loss from the death of the cow and her calf is estimated to be around $2,500. However, the emotional toll on the local farming community is immeasurable.

Authorities are now seeking information from the public to help solve this crime. Anyone with information related to this incident is encouraged to call Crimestoppers at 575-546-7800. Tipsters can remain anonymous and can also submit information online at p3tips.com.

Unemployment Rates in New Mexico Show Mixed Trends in September

DEMING - The latest unemployment figures for September 2023 have been released by New Mexico Workforce Solutions, revealing a mixed bag of results across the state.

Luna County reported an unemployment rate of 6.5%, a decrease from the 7.6% recorded last month. However, this figure is on par with the unemployment rate from September 2022, indicating no year-on-year improvement.

In contrast, other areas in the region have reported lower unemployment rates for September. Las Cruces reported a rate of 3.8%, while Grant County and Hidalgo County reported rates of 3.0% and 3.1% respectively.

The county with the lowest unemployment rate for September was Los Alamos County at 2.0%, while Luna County had the highest rate at 6.5%.

On a broader scale, New Mexico’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained steady at 3.7 percent, unchanged from August but slightly up from the 3.5 percent recorded in the previous year.

Nationally, the unemployment rate for September was 3.8 percent, also unchanged from August and up from 3.5 percent in September 2022.

Despite these figures, total nonagricultural payroll employment grew by 15,300 jobs, or 1.8 percent, between September 2022 and September 2023, indicating some positive economic activity in the state.

Innovative Prison Program and Community Initiatives by Deming Animal Guardians

DEMING - Deming Animal Guardians (DAG), a local animal welfare organization, has launched an innovative program in collaboration with the Southwest NM Correctional Facility.

The program, which began last Friday, involves inmates training dogs provided by DAG. The first batch of four dogs will start their 8-week training course this Wednesday. DAG is responsible for all supplies and has hired a professional trainer for the program. The community can look forward to “graduation” photos in a couple of months.

In addition to this, DAG has been granted permission by Peppers Supermarket to place a bulletin board near their exit. This board will be used to raise awareness about DAG, their services, and animals available for adoption. The lower portion of the bulletin board will be available for other local non-profit organizations to promote their charities.

Despite being short on funds, DAG is encouraging the community to support them by nominating them as a worthwhile charity for funding on the Unwanted Animals website. Community members can share their experiences with DAG, such as pet adoptions, pet food bank services, rescues, pet food giveaways combined with humane education, and the prison program.

DAG has also been working closely with Watermelon Ranch in Albuquerque. The Ranch has been instrumental in accepting kittens from DAG for adoption in the Albuquerque area. On Saturday, DAG’s director Chrystal drove 12 cats to Watermelon Ranch in Rio Rancho. So far this year, 71 of the 122 cats rescued by DAGSHIP & CAR have been transferred, with 41 going to Watermelon Ranch.

With these initiatives, DAG continues its mission to improve animal welfare and engage the community in Deming.

New City Hall in Deming Opens its Doors to the Community

DEMING - The City of Deming proudly announces the completion of its new City Hall. An open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony are scheduled for Monday, October 30th, inviting all community members to join in the celebration.

Deming Radio News spoke with Mayor Benny Jasso about the new offices and the open house.

The open house will take place from 11am until 3pm, with the official ribbon-cutting ceremony slated for 12:30pm. The new City Hall is located at 1275 East Pine Street in Deming. In addition to touring the new facility, attendees will be treated to a complimentary lunch.

The completion of the new City Hall marks a significant milestone for the City of Deming. All community members are encouraged to attend the open house and join in celebrating this momentous occasion. Again, the event is set for Monday October 30th starting at 11am.
