DEMING - A Deming resident currently held at the Doña Ana County Detention Center will serve a 9-year prison sentence and is subject to deportation during or following his sentence after pleading guilty last September to smuggling firearms into Mexico.
The Deming Headlight* reported that Jesus Barron, age 35, of Deming, was charged with heading a smuggling ring involving his wife and four residents of Palomas, Mexico.
Barron pleaded guilty in September to a single count of conspiracy, six counts of making a false statement in the acquisition of a firearm and one count of smuggling goods from the United States.
In a plea agreement, Barron admitted to paying his former wife, Ana Barron, and four others to purchase firearms between January and June 2021, although the operation allegedly was active going back to 2018.
In June 2021, federal law enforcement caught on to the operation after Mexican authorities seized seven assault-style rifles from an SUV at a checkpoint.
The seized weapons, which had been purchased in Las Cruces, led ATF officers to others whom were suspected of making straw purchases for organized crime organizations in Mexico. The investigation later found purchases of a wide variety of weapons in Deming and Silver City as well as Las Cruces that were never recovered.
Other persons arrested in the case stated that after making the purchases they would run them to the Barrons’ home in Deming, identifying Jesus Barron as the one in charge of the operation.
