Deming — The City of Deming urges residents to apply for lifeguard positions so the Sam Baca Aquatic Center can open before Memorial Day weekend.

Without at least 15 applicants, the city cannot open the pool as scheduled. "We need at least 15 trained and certified lifeguards before opening the pool," said Mayor Benny Jasso. "We understand how important it is for our community to have access to a safe and enjoyable swimming area, and we're doing everything we can to ensure this happens."

The City of Deming is offering competitive salaries and training for qualified applicants. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone looking for summer employment or wanting to get involved in their local community.

The application deadline has been extended until May 5th; however, this also means that the opening date will be pushed back until Memorial Day weekend if they do not receive enough applications by then.

Residents can still enjoy the splash pad, which opens May 12th from 3-7 pm and beginning May 25th 7 am –7 pm.

For additional information or questions, please contact the City of Deming at 575-546-8848.

Public invited to join lunch and learn presentations from PhD student Kevin Willson

SILVER CITY – The Gila National Forest will host two “lunch and learn” events April 18 and 19, featuring Kevin Willson, who will discuss his research into ponderosa pine regeneration following high-severity fire. His study examines how wind, slope, and residual live trees affect recovery of ponderosa pine stands in fire scars.

Kevin Willson is a PhD student in the Hurteau Earth Systems Ecology Lab at the University of New Mexico. He is studying the effects of fire in ponderosa pine ecosystems. His research examines large, high severity burn patches on the Gila National Forest to explore how different factors influence ponderosa pine regeneration. He sampled multiple high severity burn patches in the Bonner, Divide, Glass, Shelly, and Torres fire footprints to better understand how prevailing wind direction, slope, and relative position of lives trees influence the density of forest regeneration. High severity patches exhibited greater regeneration density in areas positioned downwind and downslope of intact forest, as compared to locations in upwind or upslope positions. Accounting for wind, topography, and relative position of the live trees improved the accuracy of regeneration density estimates relative to using only distance from the unburned forest edge.

“This work highlights the effect of landscape features on restoration of forest cover after high severity fire and can help inform projections of future stand development in ponderosa pine ecosystems,” said Gila National Forest Supervisor, Camille Howes. “I am excited to host these presentations and learn more about this research.”

Kevin will present his highly relevant and timely research at noon on April 18, 2023, at the Gila National Forest Supervisor’s Office, located at 3005 E. Camino del Bosque in Silver City and at noon on April 19 at the Reserve District Office, located at 5 Smokey Bear Circle in Reserve. These in-person events are open to the public. Please provide your own lunch.

Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District continues Pinos Altos prescribed burn

Introduction of low-severity fire removes ladder fuels to reduce risk of high-severity fire

SILVER CITY – The Silver City Ranger is planning to continue ignitions on the Pinos Altos Prescribed Fire project that began last week. Tomorrow, one day of ignition is planned on 12 acres of National Forest System lands in the Bear Creek drainage north of Pinos Altos, New Mexico.

The project area is adjacent to the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail and trail guards will monitor trail traffic, allowing hikers through when conditions are safe. The trail remains open; however, visitors can expect short delays to accommodate firing activities. The Bear Creek Road will be temporarily closed at the forest boundary and the Continental Divide Trail parking area on Bear Creek Road will also be closed to allow firefighters access and to protect public safety.

“Fuel conditions are conducive to meeting fire-use objectives and fire managers will continue to monitor weather closely to ensure it meets the parameters of the burn plan,” said Silver City District Ranger Elizabeth Toney. “These small burn units help to protect the community of Pinos Altos by eliminating ladder fuels and undergrowth that could lead to high severity or crown fires in the Bear Creek area. The introduction of low-intensity fire to ponderosa stands builds upon ongoing work by our partners with the State of New Mexico and the bureau of Land Management.”
Due to the project location, smoke impacts may be expected by residents in Bear Creek drainage, in Pinos Altos, and along Highway 15, but these impacts should be minimal and limited to one to two days in duration.
