DEMING – The Deming High School was put on lockdown Thursday morning after the administration received a safety concern from a student of a possible gun on campus.
The facts of the situation are as follows: During a routine safety drug sweep of the Deming High School campus, the school was placed in ‘shelter-in-place.’ Deming Public Schools routinely perform safety drug sweeps at our schools using a K-9 unit and, during any sweep the school will shelter-in-place to insure no one leaves the campus.
During today’s sweep, several students began to text one another about a gun on school grounds. Another student reported the safety concern to an adult in the building and the school was immediately placed in lockdown, along with surrounding buildings.
Local law enforcement was called to assist. No gun or weapons were found on campus.
The administration said that, Student safety is our first priority. Deming Public Schools (DPS) takes all allegations, threats, and reports of safety concerns very seriously and fully investigates them.
During an active investigation DPS will only share information that we can legally disclose and will share the information when it will not cause another safety concern for our students.
A news release from the Deming Public Schools urges parents and guardians to talk with your children about false reports, unsubstantiated allegations, and spreading rumors. Please urge them to use their best judgement when sharing District news. Misinformation and rumors create chaos and fear that disrupts everyone’s education and sense of safety for the entire community.
