DEMING – There is a lot of buzz around what’s happening at 1205 E Pine Street in Deming.

Communities around the country are seeing empty K-Mart buildings disintegrating where once busy commerce areas existed.

So, the City of Deming decided to purchase the K-Mart property to redevelop it and add value to the community.

The property is approximately 90K sq. ft. By the end of the year, approximately 36K sq. ft. of that property will become the new City Hall offices. Mayor Benny Jasso told Deming Radio News that, “We really wanted to make City Hall more inclusive, accessible, and useful to our constituents while also providing a secure place for community happenings.”

The other approximated 60K sq. ft. of the building will be utilized for business development. There has been increased interest from retail developers, as well as mixed-use space.

Deming officials said that they hope to make those announcements soon.

Deming City Administrator Aaron Sera said that, “The new city hall will include space for children to play while their parents or guardians are applying for a business license or conducting other city business.”

City officials said that they were expecting to have the new city offices open in the next few months.

Now that they are moving out of the down town area we have another empty building in the area. Why are they moving? What's wrong with City Hall? Will it be used for? Did we, citizens, need to spend all that money on this venture?

Why didn't they make that into a community center for our community have things for them somewhere they can go and spend time instead of being on the streets being open to the Drug epidemic we have here in luna county, as well as others. City hall has been there for many decades and has severed all of us very well, should jave been used for something better than what they are wasting tax payers money.

Coulda been a Harbor Freight. Or literary anything of use in this crap town. Deming has nothing. This town is dry. It’s just a place to sleep or eat on your way down I-10. But no let’s build a bigger version of what already sucks. Stupid

although this makes a lot of sense. It is too bad to see that Kmart had to go under. I live in Las Cruces and have hope that they were still active in Deming. I wish you well for an ambition of a growing economy. Keep up the good work.

Well at least they're doing something with that building, although they could have made it more recreational or educational for the younger generation

Aaron Sera and the city council have NO idea what the citizens want...and it's not this. The citizens are never being involved in these major TAX PAYER funded decisions and that has to change! We have public events venues, the current offices are fine and there's TONS of empty spaces for business's! We're 15k people not 100k.This is close to nearly being fraudulent tax spending. COMPLAIN at the NEXT CITY COUNCIL MEETING!!!!

We have been told the 60 percent will be retail from
day one and most likely will be, just as soon as a under the table deal is made between a few from the cities side and the future retail establishment.

Wow, with the infrastructure of this town decaying, and neglected for years. Our streets are falling apart. Doing slurry on the side streets is not getting the job done. Florida is still a river on both sides after a rain storm.

It is sad to see that taxpayer funds are being spent on fluff projects instead of trying to bring new industry and businesses into town. Constructions jobs are being sent out to Las Cruces while Deming contractors stand by dumbfounded that they are passed over. A Home Depot, or Lowes would have been a better choice for that building. It would have siphoned the business that Las Cruces gets by having a central hub here for the southern areas of the state.

I just moved back to Deming after being gone for the past 41 years. I have visited and seen that not much has changed. With this new project, it is business as usual. Ignore the true needs of the people to keep pet projects going, make a legacy for yourself, and stand by and watch as this great little town falls into total decay.

One would think that after the water and natural gas issues this past year, that the city government would try to rebuild the trust of the citizens of Deming. This new, grand, city hall is a joke. Makes sense to build offices that WE DON'T NEED. Sorry, (not really) Aaron, your "explation" on why we need new offices for the city is just weak. A play area? That is EXACTLY what we need in order to turn the economy around! I've also been told there is going to be a huge court yard area with a fountain. Just what our area needs, another massive drainage on our water supply.

There are real needs in this town that need to be addressed before wasting tax dollars on a frivolous building. Homeless. Beyond poor roads and sidewalks. The trash that is literally everywhere. All of the empty buildings down town. And the parking! If we want our downtown area to be successful, we need to do something about the parking situation. It is so unsafe
What about housing? The prices people want for rentals is outrageous. For the low price of $800, you could live in a crappy trailer that isn't fit for a person to live in! Yes, inflation, but we live in one of the poorest states in America. That's something we should be proud of. Can we talk about the police department? Can anyone say corruption? The police turn a blind eye on drug dealers, gangs, vandals, and theft. We can't forget our paragons of virtue that work for the city. The city gets rid of good, hard working, HONEST, people who want to make a positive change, and replaces them with people that the mayor, or the different directors like more. Nepotism much? There are so many people that are directors, or assistants, or supervisors, that have no clue of what they are doing, and have no BUSINESS doing it! They literally have no idea on how to do their jobs! The cemetery is another place that needs SERIOUS changes! Loved ones headstones are being vandalized. They are knocked over. I know people who have had their loved ones headstones come off it's base and have fallen on them! And what does the city do? Not a damn thing. The list is endless of issues that our city government needs to address, and they still don't. I sure hope people remember all the corruption, and fraudulent actions of our elected officals. As a community we need to make our voices heard and get rid of snakes running our town. So yeah, we totally need a new city hall. Smart move Benny

It's a joke, but let's take care of the local politicians, it's a mini version of Washington DC
