COLUMBUS – (The Deming Headlight) -The village of Columbus’ annual audit for the fiscal year ending last June found numerous items of concern 28 findings in all, eight of them characterized as material weaknesses.
The Deming Headlight reported that the findings suggest the village is vulnerable to waste, fraud or abuse in numerous areas, and some findings could lead to expensive fines and make it harder or more expensive for the village to access state and federal funds.
Independent auditor De’Aun Willoughby, CPA, based in Clovis, delivered her final report to village officials in December but it was not made public until it was released by the New Mexico Office of the State Auditor on March 8.
New Mexico code requires that the audit also be presented at a public meeting of the village’s elected body, but that won’t happen for at least another few weeks.
Accountants with the firm of Beasley, Mitchell and Co. warned Columbus Mayor Salas on Feb. 13th that the village’s operating cash was “dangerously low.”
And even if the village weathers its immediate cash flow problems, New Mexico State Auditor Joseph Maestas said there could be expensive consequences if village hall does not get its accounts in order.
