DEMING – A parent of a Ruben S. Torres Elementary student has been arrested and charged with two counts of unlawfully carrying a deadly weapon on school premises.
Deming Police Chief Clint Hogan told Deming Radio News that on Thursday September 21st, Ruben S. Torres Elementary school officials observed Mr. Michael Moreno, age 45, wearing a fanny pack over a holstered weapon on school property.
At that time, School officials spoke with Moreno, and advised him not to carry the weapon on school grounds again.
Then the next day, Friday, September 22nd, as school was being let out, this time, Deming Police officers working as school resource officers, observed Mr. Moreno attempt to disguise the handgun again underneath the fanny pack.
This sent the school into precautionary lockdown.
Both times, Mr. Moreno never gained entry into the school.
Moreno was taken to the Deming Police Department and charged with two counts of unlawful carrying a deadly weapon on school premises. One count for Thursday’s incident, and one count for the incident on Friday.
