DEMING – Luna County is joining the New Mexico Coalition to End Homelessness again this year to count the current number of individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Luna County. Staff and volunteers conduct surveys in soup kitchens, day shelters and directly on the streets.
The goal is to get an accurate count of individuals and families experiencing homelessness and to learn about their specific needs to be able to help find programs and services for short- and long-term solutions.
Luna County will be doing street outreach, as well as being a drop off site for donations.
Lupita Hernandez, with Luna County Planning said in a press release that, “Knowing how many people experience homelessness helps secure funding for homeless service programs, including annual federal funding for long-term solutions like permanent supportive housing and transitional housing.” By learning more about the demographics of individuals and families experiencing homelessness, that information will help influence practices and policy, clearly identify those in need.
Donations being collected will be distributed to individuals while the count is being conducted. Suggested donations include socks, blankets, hats, gloves, scarves, gift cards, wet wipes, hygiene items and sleeping bags.
The Luna County count will be held from January 31st until February 3rd. Local drop-off locations include Deming Silver Linings, 212 S Copper, Spin Housing 416 S. Silver and the Luna County Courthouse 700 S Silver.
