DEMING – The Deming-Luna County Animal Shelter recently had to euthanize over 100 dogs with distemper and parvo.
In an article published Wednesday in the Deming Headlight written by reporter Annya Loya, she reports that the shelter closed its doors last month due to an overflow of rescued and abandoned animals, which ended in a massive infection of the viruses.
Shelter officials said that the public has resorted to throwing their pets over the shelter’s fence to get rid of them without facing shelter staff. One of the pets that was dropped off this way carried the distemper virus, which lead to the shelter’s mass euthanasia.
The majority of dogs at the shelter contracted the virus and eventually had to be put down. Only seven dogs survived the initial spread. and some of these might not make it, according to shelter staff.
