DEMING - In a recent development, 18-year-old Michael Devon Moody, previously identified as a runaway, has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for the murder of 14-year-old Aston Remondini of Deming.
The sentencing took place in the Sixth Judicial District Courthouse on Tuesday, December 5th, before Judge Jennifer DeLaney, where Moody pleaded guilty to charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and robbery, making him a co-defendant in the case.
The Deming Headlight reported on Friday that Moody's involvement in the heinous crime included a chilling plan to steal Remondini's gun and carry out the murder.
Court records reveal that on April 26th, when Moody was 16 and his accomplice Rafael Camacho who was 18, lured Remondini to a remote area off Keeler Farm Road North West of Deming under the pretext of shooting targets in the desert.
Moody confessed to law enforcement that their intention was to steal Remondini's gun and, ultimately, take his life. He admitted to shooting Remondini with a 9mm handgun before inflicting further harm by stabbing the youth with a hunting knife.
Rafael Camacho, also implicated in the murder, is still facing legal proceedings. At 18-years-old during the time of the crime, Camacho is scheduled for trial in May of 2024.
Despite Moody being a juvenile at the time of the gruesome incident, he is now considered an adult and will serve his 28-year sentence in an adult correctional facility in New Mexico. The community awaits further developments in the legal proceedings against Camacho as they seek justice for the tragic loss of Aston Remondini.
