Deming residents shocked by the price of their city natural gas bills

DEMING - The topic of the soaring price Deming residents are now paying for Natural gas was discussed during last week’s Deming City Council meeting.
The Headlight reported that during his administrator’s report, Aaron Sera said he had met with staff members of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham in hope of recruiting some state or federal aid with the recent spike in natural gas prices from the San Juan Basin.  However, Sera indicated no more assistance was forthcoming.
Nora Sackett, the governor’s press secretary said, “The governor’s office doesn’t play any role in that…We are obviously cognizant of the fact that costs are high for folks right now, which is another round of state tax rebates is in the governor’s executive budget proposal.”
Lawmakers returned the state Capitol last Tuesday, the same day as the council meeting, to approve a budget for the next fiscal year.
In the meantime, Sera held out hope that the city’s energy broker, Symmetry Energy Solutions, would sign on to a lower four-year rate that had been negotiated as a way to bring down the immediate per-unit price paid by city ratepayers, a rate that recently rose to $3.30 per unit.

I just received my gas bill today. Interestingly, my gas bill went from approximately $120.00 last month to $799.00 this month to a supposedly price increase of 350%. If you do the math, this turns out to be almost $10,000.00 per year.

A $680,000.00 gas hike, whether for one year or one month should not cost a total of 6000 residents receiving the service 1/3 of their annual income creating a revenue of over $1.5 million dollars per month.

I am simply outraged and disgusted by this type of increase, not solely for myself but for all of our community residents who are affected by this. How is it possible for apparently, Deming, NM to be the only community feigned by this disgraceful increase? How are our community members living on a fixed budget going to get by for food and the other basic necessities needed to live every month?

If we are getting this Natural Gas Service from the San Juan Basin from the company Symmetry Energy Solutions and they are not creating the supply that they should for a small city like Deming, NM, would it not be obligatory to search for Another SOLUTION??

I say:
"Shame To All Those Involved Who Have Caused This Problem!"
