DEMING – This week, Deming Public Schools is joining the nation in celebrating National School Bus Safety Week, a campaign that aims to raise awareness and appreciation for school bus safety and the people who make it possible.
National School Bus Safety Week is observed during the third full week of October every year. The theme for this year is “Be Safe - Know the Danger Zone,” which refers to the area around the school bus where children are most at risk of being hit by passing vehicles or the bus itself.
According to the National Association for Pupil Transportation, school buses are the safest mode of transportation for students, but the greatest risk is not riding the bus, but approaching or leaving it. In fact, 90% of all school bus related fatalities occur while loading or unloading the bus.
To prevent such tragedies, Deming Public Schools would like to remind students, parents, and drivers of some simple but important safety tips:
To show our gratitude and support, we invite families and community members to join us in celebrating National School Bus Safety Week. Whether you’re a student, parent, teacher, or city official, let’s all work together to make school bus safety a priority.

- Arrive early at the bus stop and stand at least five giant steps from the curb.
- Look both ways before crossing the street and never cross behind the bus.
- Don’t play near the street or run after the bus if you miss it.
- Wait for the bus driver’s signal before boarding or exiting the bus.
- Stay seated and buckled up while on the bus and keep your head and arms inside.
