DEMING* - On March 10th, Captain Jose Montoya took on the David Goggins’ 4x4x48 Challenge, a grueling 48-hour test of physical and mental endurance. The challenge consists of running four miles every four hours for two days straight. With no plans to have a team present, Montoya was surprised when his wife Erica and friend Nick Perez, a retired Deming Police Department Officer, offered to accompany him on each run.
Montoya, an experienced boxing coach and former boxer himself, was up for the challenge. "I knew what pushing myself physically and mentally was like, but this challenge seemed intriguing and tough," said Montoya. "I wanted to see if I had what it takes to do something like this."
What followed were two days of intense physical activity. Despite the exhaustion that came with running four miles every four hours for two days straight, Montoya stayed motivated through sheer determination and motivation with the help of his support team. “As I got into the mid-point of the challenge, I realized that I would not have been able to do it without Erica and Nick pushing me along," said Montoya. "They were my motivation to keep going when I was hurting and tired; they made sure I was eating and hydrating, and they kept me going when I was mentally exhausted."
Montoya began his first run at 8:00 pm on March 10th and completed his last on March 12th at 5:00 pm. He ran all 12 runs between a 35-38-minute pace, which is an impressive time. After a grueling 48 hours, Montoya finished the David Goggins’ 4x4x48 Challenge. Montoya credits his success to those who supported him throughout his journeys, Erica and Nick, who provided him with much-needed motivation during difficult times. Through determination and perseverance, they achieved something remarkable together as a team - crossing off a major accomplishment from Montoya’s bucket list, saying, “I am so proud that I was able to complete this challenge successfully with my family and friends by my side! It was hard work but worth it in the end."
