DEMING - Last week, The New Mexico Science Olympiad state championship was held in New Mexico Tech in Socorro, New Mexico. Deming High School is one of the high schools in the state that participated in the state championship.
Few weeks prior, on February 4, 2023, Deming High School participated in Science Olympiad Regional Tournament that was help in Western New Mexico University in Silver City. The team won awards in the following events, Forestry – 3rd Place, Rocks and Minerals – 2nd Place, Trajectory (Catapult) – 1st Place.
After the regional tournament, the team prepared for the state championship. A total of 22 schools for Division C (High School) registered and competed for the following events – Aerial Scramble, Anatomy and Physiology, Astrnomy, Bridge, Cell Biology, Chemistry Lab, Codebusters, Detector Building, Disease Detectives, Dynamic Planet, Environmental Chemistry, Experimental Design, Fermi Questions, Flight, Forensics, Forestry, Green Generation, It’s About Time, Remote Sensing, Rocks & Minerals, Scrambler, Trajectory (Catapult), Wi-Fi Lab, Write It Do It, Cybersecurity, and Solar Power.
Members of the Deming High Science Olympiad team did very well in the competition and placed in the following build and non-build events:
10th Place – Flight
9th Place – Wi-Fi Lab
7th Place – Forensics
5th Place – Cybersecurity
5th Place – Detector Building
3rd Place – Fermi Questions
2nd Place – Solar Power
2nd Place – Aerial Scramble
One of the highlights of the awarding ceremony is to award the Coach of the Year plaque. This award is presented each year to one Middle School and one High School Science Olympiad Coach.
It serves to recognize those individuals who have made a positive contribution to Science Olympiad, their students, their school, and their community. For this year 2023, Deming High School Science Olympiad coach, Mr. John Valdes received the award as New Mexico Science Olympiad Coach of the Year. Mr. Valdes is one of the Filipino teachers in the school district. When he was hired in 2019, he was offered to coach and supervised Deming High Science Olympiad Team. Since then the teams were competing for regionals and state and led the students to achieve their fullest potentials in terms of Science and Technology.
