DEMING – It’s that time of year again and you’ve probably noticed local retailers selling fireworks for the upcoming 4th of July celebrations.
By Deming City ordinance, The following are permissible fireworks within the city limits:
A. Ground and handheld sparkling and smoke devices:
1. Cone fountains;
2. Crackling devices;
3. Cylindrical fountains;
4. Flitter sparklers;
5. Ground spinners;
6. Illuminating torches;
7. Toy smoke devices; and wheels.
B. Aerial devices:
1. Mines; Roman candles; and shells.
The following are prohibited fireworks within the municipality of Deming:
A. Aerial devices:
1. Aerial spinners;
2. Helicopters;
3. Missile type rockets; and
4. Stick type rockets.
B. Ground audible devices:
1. Chasers; and
2. Firecrackers.
By Luna County Resolution, not all of the fireworks that are sold within the County are safe for use.
The use of missile-type rockets, helicopters, aerial spinners, stick type rockets and ground audible devices within the unincorporated areas of Luna County is not recommended.
According to a news release from the County Volunteer Fire Departments, the use of ground and hand-held sparkling and smoke device type of fireworks, are limited to areas within the unincorporated area of Luna County that are paved or barren or that have a readily accessible source of water for use by the homeowner or general public.

Fireworks safety tips
- Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks, including sparklers.
- Keep a bucket of water or garden hose handy.
- Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.
- Never try to re-light fireworks, or pick up fireworks that have not ignited.
- Never use fireworks while impaired with alcohol or drugs.
