LAS CRUCES – Animal Protection New Mexico (APNM), a statewide non-profit that protects animals by creating social change, is hosting a gelding clinic on Monday, April 10 to serve equines in need.
The castration procedure is free, but the clinic is limited to 20 equine clients. Horse guardians must pre-register to reserve their spot in advance. The equine medical service will be performed by Schumacher Veterinary Clinic based in Las Cruces. “We’re thrilled to serve Southern New Mexico’s horse guardians by hosting a complimentary gelding clinic,” says Victoria Murphy, equine protection fund program manager at Animal Protection New Mexico. “We are committed to helping guardians of equines in need and who may not be able to afford the service, courtesy of Animal Protection New Mexico’s Equine Protection Fund.”
The clinic will take place on April 10 at the Southern New Mexico County Fairgrounds, 12125 Robert Larson Blvd in Las Cruces. It will begin at 8 a.m. and last until the last procedure is completed. In order to be eligible to receive the gelding procedure, stallions and jacks must be at least four months old, healthy with two descended testicles, halter-trained and accompanied by a qualified handler.
Equine guardians are responsible for travel to and from the clinic and aftercare for the animal. Optional vaccinations and wolf teeth extractions are also available, at the owner’s expense. To reserve a slot, horse guardians must contact Victoria Murphy at epf@apnm.org or call (505) 803-3770 before April 7.
Pre-registration is required and is limited to 20 gelding procedures; no walk-in appointments. Appointment slots will be filled in the order that pre-registrations are received.
