Local Crime Report for Friday October 30, 2015

(Deming) – Here’s the area crime report:
      Will Gierhart, age 30, of Las Cruces, was arrested for DUI and on an improper-lane driving violation… Alfred Ventura, age 53, was arrested for aggravated fleeing from law enforcement officers, trespassing and shoplifting at Walmart… Abraham Galindo, age 44, was arrested for unlawful taking of a motor vehicle… Basilisa Granillo, age 32, was arrested for driving while license was suspended or revoked, unlawful use of a license, no insurance, expired registration, on a failure-to-stop driving violation and scattering trash or rubbish… Adrian Magallanes, age 27, was arrested for unlawful use of a license…
     Jerry Richey, age 30, was arrested on a District Court warrant for failure to appear and on two Municipal warrants – one for failure to appear and one for failure to pay fines… Theresa Russell, age 24, was arrested on a Dona Ana County warrant for failure to pay fines… and Keith Snow, age 49, was cited for vicious dogs and dogs at large.


Halloween Candy Buy-Back Monday

(Deming) – Deming Dental Services will once again be buying back Halloween candy.
     The folks at Deming Dental Services will pay children $1 per pound of candy.
     The candy “buy back” will take place Monday, November 2nd, from 3-5 p.m. at Deming Dental Services, 400 South Gold.

Bridge Work Begins Monday

(Deming) – The New Mexico Department of Transportation will be doing bridge work on I-10, exit 85, near the Quality Inn motel, beginning Monday, November 2nd.
     The bridge work project is expected to take one month to complete.
   The bridge will be closed to westbound traffic and will not be accessible onto the westbound lanes only.


School, City, County Work Session Monday

(Deming) – The Deming School Board, Deming City Council and Luna County Commission will meet in a joint work session Monday morning.
     According to the legal notice, the purpose of the work session is to discuss the InView/Profile Series TV Production.
     The Deming School Board decided in August on a 4-1 vote to participate in the television production at a cost of nearly $30,000.  John Sweetser was the dissenting vote.
     School administrators reportedly have asked the city and county to shoulder part of the expense of the production.
     No action will be taken.
     The work session also will include a tour of the high school computer repair shop.
     The special joint work session is set to begin at 9 a.m. Monday in the board room of the Emmett Shockley Administration Building, 400 Cody Road.
     The work session is open to the public.

(Deming) – Here’s the area crime report:
      Jeffery Odell, age 24, of Alamogordo, was arrested for aggravated DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, having an open container, no proof of insurance and littering… Deandra Lopez, age 18, of Silver City, was arrested for DUI, no proof of insurance and speeding… George Vera, age 32, was arrested for aggravated fleeing from a law enforcement officer and on a Municipal warrant for failure to appear…
     Jana Black, age 35, was arrested on a District Court warrant for a probation violation… Abelardo Beltran, age 25, of Albuquerque, was arrested on an instate hold for an out-of-county warrant… Victoria Trujillo, age 30, was cited twice on consecutive days for two counts of dogs at large and one count of vicious dogs… and a 15-year-old boy was cited for possession of marijuana.
     Also… a 25-year-old Deming man discovered his identity was stolen after learning he owed over $2,000 on an account opened in California without his authorization… electronics, tools and coins, with a combined value of over $1,200, were taken from a residence off Poppy Drive… a computer tablet, speaker box and DVD player, with a combined value of over $300, were taken from a residence off East Elm… electrical outlets and breakers were taken from a construction site off Country Club Road… over $100 worth of items including pillows, ash trays and a comforter were taken from a motel off East Pine… prescription medication was taken from a residence off South Zinc… and mailboxes were damaged off Ventura Road.


Stars-N-Parks Programs Saturday

(Deming) – Stars-N-Parks astronomy programs will take place this Saturday – Halloween – at both City of Rocks and Rockhound state parks.
     Rockhound State Park is located in the Little Florida Mountains southeast of Deming and City of Rocks is located between Deming and Silver City.
Attendees will observe highlights of the late October sky, including Aquila setting in the southwest, the Andromeda Galaxy high in the east and predominant fall constellations.
The events begin with night sky tours, followed by views of deep sky objects through a high-powered telescope.
John Gilkison will be the presenter at Rockhound, and Matt Wilson will be the presenter at City of Rocks.
The programs are viewed in dark sky settings beginning at 7:25 p.m., and attendees should arrive at the parks at sunset, which is at about 6:15 p.m., so they can become familiar with their surroundings before nightfall.
Both programs will end at about 10 p.m.
     Stars-N-Parks is sponsored by the National Public Observatory, a non-profit membership organization.  More information is available at www.Astro-NPO.org.

Daylight Saving Time Ends

(Deming) – Daylight saving time ends this weekend.
     Remember to "fall back" and set your clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday night.  The official end of daylight saving time is 2 a.m. this Sunday, November 1st.


Elks Hand Out Red Ribbons This Week

(Deming) – More than 5,000 red ribbons were handed out this week in Deming schools during Drug Awareness Week.
     Deming Elks Lodge supplied the ribbons which were given to every student and teacher in the district.
     The red awareness ribbons are used as a symbol for the prevention of abusive drug use.
     Elks Exalted Ruler George Torres said one of the goals of the Elks is to prevent children from using drugs, adding that the ribbons are a visual way to bring attention to the problems of drug use.
     In addition to the ribbons, several gift cards were handed out to selected students.

(Deming) – Here’s the area crime report:
     Christopher Meza, age 32, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear… Raul Garcia, age 34, was cited for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia… and a 17-year-old boy was cited for possession of synthetic narcotics and possession of drug paraphernalia.
     Also, a mail box valued at $300 was damaged off Appaloosa Drive.

St. Vincent de Paul Gets PNM Funds

(Deming) – The PNM Resources Foundation recently awarded 54 nonprofit organizations throughout New Mexico – including one in Deming – a total of $250,000 for the PNM Reduce Your Use Grant Program.
     In Deming, St. Vincent de Paul was awarded funds to install a new, energy efficient evaporative cooler in the after-hours building of the homeless shelter and soup kitchen.
     The PNM Reduce Your Use Grant Program annually helps nonprofit organizations statewide complete projects that reduce their energy use and lower their utility bills, allowing them to spend more on providing essential services to clients.
     Since its inception in 2008, nonprofit organizations statewide have received more than $1.8 million through the PNM Reduce Your Use Grant Program.
     The PNM Resources Foundation is funded by PNM shareholders
