The annual walk to raise funds for Cancer Support of Deming and Luna County will take place this Saturday, May 2nd, with registration beginning at 8 a.m. and the walk running from 9 a.m. to noon at Voier’s Park across from Starmax.

Joanna Costilla, a patient advocate for Cancer Support of Deming and Luna County, Inc., said Luna County Sheriff John Mooradian is the honoree for this year’s cancer fundraising walk.

Retirements, Restructuring Mark Deming Public School Year End

4/29/2015

Picture
(Deming) – Retirements and administrative restructuring are creating significant changes in the Deming Public School organizational chart.

Athletic and Activity Director Mike Ellis, a forty year veteran of the district, and Associate Superintendent Mary Lou Cameron, a thirty-nine year veteran of the district, will both be retiring at the end of their contract year.

Reportedly, the district is advertising for a new athletic and activity director, but it appears the associate superintendent position will not immediately be filled.

And Bell Elementary Principal Frank Milo has agreed to become the Director of Transportation for the 2015-16 school year.

Current Transportation and Construction Director Herb Borden will focus on his construction responsibilities with the building of the new high school and intermediate school.

Also, new for next year:  every school will have an instructional coach instead of an instructional leader, including two at the high school.

School officials said the change from instructional leaders to instructional coaches is not simply a change in title. The job description for the coaches specifies they will spend at least 75% of their time in the classrooms supporting teachers, especially new teachers.

Administrative interns will be at most of the elementary schools and at Deming Intermediate School to assist the principals with teacher evaluations.  Administrative interns are essentially assistant principals on a trial basis.     And Red Mountain Middle School will be getting another assistant principal.

Spanish-Language Magazine Planned for Area

4/28/2015

(Deming) – A Deming woman is planning to publish a monthly magazine, solely in Spanish, to inform Spanish-speaking residents of southwest New Mexico on health topics and services, community resources within the city and county, and local happenings.

Owner Mary Mackey said Deming has a lot of resources and it is her dream that all the information for these resources be relayed to Spanish-speaking residents.

She said the magazine also is meant to be an educational tool to bring awareness to Spanish-speaking residents of how to get involved in the community, where to go for services, how and where to vote, and other informational topics.

Her goal is to have the first publication out in mid-to-late May.

Mackey added that information is power, and she believes that by providing this magazine in Spanish, Spanish-speaking residents will be empowered with information that will result in a healthier, more educated and more involved community.

Anyone who would like to advertise their business or services, or who would like more information on the magazine, should contact Mackey at 546-0567 or by email at campotypist@aol.com.
