Larry Calderon Palos

Larry Calderon Palos,83, went home with our heavenly Father Thursday June 8, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family.
 
A memorial service took place at 7 o'clock in the evening Tuesday June 13, 2017 at  Baca's Funeral Chapels. Pastor Lorraine Silva of Living Word Family Church officiated.
 
Larry was born December 17, 1933 in Deming to Micaela Holguin and Lazaro Flores.  In June of 1955 he married Pola Borrego in Deming and was retired as a truck driver. Larry was a strong Christian man filled with so much love.  He worked hard to provide for his family  was a man full of wisdom and a guide to his family. "We will cherish our special memories of you, your stories, your hugs and kisses. We'll miss you and keep you forever in our hearts. Until we meet again!"
 
Survivors include his wife Pola Borrego of the home, 2 sons; Larry (Irma) Palos, Las Cruces and Santos Palos, Deming; 2 daughters,  Margaret (Robert) Acosta, Deming and Cathy Palos, Odessa, TX; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; 4 sisters, Juanita Madrid (Henry), Flavia Feaselman (Richard), Mary Helen White (Don) all from Deming, and Elvira Perez, Las Cruces.
 
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Baca's Mimbres Crematory.

E. W. (Bill) Hassman

E. W. (Bill) Hassman, 78, passed away Sunday June 4, 2017 at Mt. View Regional Medical Center in Las Cruces.

​A memorial service will be Friday June 16, 2017 at 10:30 in the morning at the First Christian Church in Deming with Rev. Darrell L. Witmer and Rev. Rob Wilson officiating. 

Concluding services and inurnment with honors will follow at Mt. View Cemetery.

Bill Hassman was born on November 18, 1938 In Luna County, New Mexico.  His mother was Loretta Julia McCarthy. His father was Chester Frederick Hassman.  His brothers were Sonny and Everett.  His sisters were Elisabeth Ackerman, Judith Rodriquez, and Rose Smith.  They all preceded Bill in death. 

He voluntarily joined the United States Army in 1958 and served in numerous places during the Cold War and up to the beginning of the Vietnam War. He was most proud to be in the 2nd Armored Division, a .50 caliber machine gunner on a tank, and was Direct Support for the 1st Calvary.  He married Julie Audrienne Hartigan on May 27, 1959.  They have two children. A son, Eric William born in Landstuhl, Germany, his wife Julie Jones. Their children Eric Jr. (Macy), Brandi, and Tiffany. A daughter, Jada Audrienne born in El Paso, Texas.  Her husband is Robert O. Witmer, and their children are Jonah and Micah.  He is survived by his wife Julie of fifty-eight years, their children, and grandchildren, several nephews and nieces. 

He was part owner in a family business for over thirty years, Southwest Urethane, Inc.  He worked throughout the state of New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Colorado, and even into Mexico.  He was a member of First Christian Church and served on the Board until moving to Las Cruces, NM in 2003.  He was a faithful servant of the Lord.

His hobbies were race car driving, wood carving, gun collecting, and theater.  He could build or fix anything.  One of the last conversations he and his, Julie, had was that they had a wonderful and amazing life together.  His presence will be missed, but the memories will live on in the hearts of all who loved and knew him.

Anna T. Sloan

​Anna T. Sloan, 89, resident of Deming passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 surrounded by her family and friends.

Anna was born on September 25, 1927 in Flatonia, TX to Cyril and Mary Orsak, Czechoslovakian Immigrants.  The Orsak Family moved to Deming, NM in 1929 where they worked side by side farming.
 
Anna graduated from Deming High School in 1946.  She worked at Mimbres Valley Farmers Association, Icul Credit Union in Chicago and then moved to Las Cruces for a job at Farm Supply Co-op, where she met her husband James R Sloan.  It was love at first sight and they were married on April 4, 1956.  They had two daughters; Mary Louise and Bridget Anne. James (Bill) went to work for PNM in Deming in 1959 and was transferred to Santa Fe NM in 1962.  Anna became active in several organizations: Elks, Eagles, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, the NM Bowling Association and more.  They loved to dance, swim, golf and travel.  She was an excellent cook, canner, seamstress and so much more.

They retired and moved back to Deming in 1990.  They became active in the Deming Community.  Anna was a volunteer at the Luna Mimbres Museum, Knights of Columbus Bingo and the Holy Family Klobase.  She was a member of Border Belles and Holy Family Altar Society, and more. 

Anna will always be remembered as a loving and special Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother and Friend. She was devoted to her family and faith.  She was a hard worker and could light up any room with her sparkling personality and beautiful smile. Anna was the last member of the original Orsak family that settled in Deming in 1929.  Anna will be always cherished and truly missed.
Anna is survived by her two daughters, Mary Sloan of Las Cruces and Bridget (Jeff Kleist) of Deming, brother and sister in-laws and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Tuesday, June 13 from 4 pm to 6 pm at Baca's Funeral Chapel where a prayer vigil will begin at 6 pm.  Mass of the resurrection will be Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock at Holy Family Church with Fr. Ron Machado, Pastor officiating.  Concluding services and interment will follow at Mt View Cemetery.      

In lieu of flowers family requests memorial contributions be made to the Holy Family Catholic Church, Deming NM.

Raymundo Holguin Garcia, 80, a resident of Deming, NM entered eternal rest on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at his residence with his loved ones by his bedside.

Raymundo was born on February 10, 1937 in Santa Clara, NM to Isabel Garcia and Bruna Holguin. He is survived by his mother, Bruna Holguin; his loving wife of 61 years, Mary Lou Garcia of Deming, NM; three sons, Raymundo Garcia Jr. of Deming, NM; Juan Pena Garcia of Deming, NM and Jose A. Garcia of Deming, NM; six daughters, Virginia Pineda and her husband Jr. of Farmington, NM; Rose Ann Gonzales and her husband Luis of Deming, NM; Valentina Baca and her husband Richard of Deming, NM; Guadalupe Garcia of Deming, NM; Marcelina Garcia of Deming, NM and Dolores Garcia of Deming, NM; three sisters, Dora Crabb, Jacoba Orosco and Jovita Varela of Santa Clara, NM; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father; one daughter, Mary Ellen Garcia and one sister, Rufina Dominguez. 

A memorial rosary will take place on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 3pm at Terrazas Funeral Chapels with Deacon, Daniel Pena officiating.

Maria De Jesus Quintana, 72, a resident of Deming, NM entered eternal rest on Saturday May 27, 2017 at Gila Regional Medical Center.

Maria was born on June 13, 1944 in Fabens, Texas to Norberto Quintana and Ignacia Artelejo. She is survived by her mother Ignacia Quintana of Deming NM; one son, Michael Quintana and wife Rachel of Deming, NM; one daughter, Araceli Sosa of Rhino, Nevada; three brothers, Norberto Quintana Jr., Juan Quintana, and Manuel Quintana with wife Maria Jesus Holguin; five sisters, Estella Granillo with husband Pedro, Carmen Fernandez with husband Manuel, Magge Quintana with husband Gil, Christina Quintana, and Alicia Uscola with husband Ricardo, four step grandchildren; David Bravo, Juliza Bravo, Elisha Bravo, and Jonah Bravo.  

She is preceded in death by her father; one son Jesus Quintana; and two brothers Pancho and Nallo Quintana.

Maria Guadalupe Macias

Maria Guadalupe Macias,74, longtime Deming resident passed  away Friday June 2, 2017 at Mimbres Memorial Nursing home.
 
Visitation will began at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon at Baca's Funeral Chapels with the prayer vigil to follow at 6 o'clock there led by Christina Milo. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday morning, June 13th, at  11 o'clock in the morning at St. Ann's Catholic Church.  The rite of committal and interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her husband, Rodolfo Macias, who died in 2011. Fr. Manuel Ybarra, Pastor, will officiate.  Serving as pallbearers will be Rodolfo C., Lupe and Matthew Macias, Raul Ruiz, Adrian Madrid and Trinidad Sierra.
 
She was born August 9, 1942 in El Pueblito, Chihuahua, Mexico to Maria Campos Aranda and Jose de la Luz Carbajal. In April of 1967 she married Rodolfo Macias also, at El Pueblito. In 2003 they moved to Deming from Las Vegas, NV and was a communicant at St. Ann's Catholic Church. She enjoyed her stay here until she became ill.
 
Survivors include 2 sons, Rodolfo Macias and wife, Emily, Las Vegas, NV and Lupe Macias and companion, Joanna Hernandez, Scottsdale, AZ and a daughter, Yolanda and husband German Ruiz, Deming; 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.    
 
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband and 2 sisters, Cruz Mendoza and Yolanda Munoz.

Frances Marie "Frenchie" Martinez

FRANCES MARIE “FRENCHIE” MARTINEZ, 55, lifelong resident of Deming went home to be with her Lord Tuesday June 6, 2017.
     Visitation will be this Friday, June 9, 2017 at 5 o’clock at Baca’s Funeral Chapel where a prayer vigil will begin at 6 o’clock led by Cristina Milo.  Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday morning at 10 at St. Ann Catholic Church with Fr. Manuel Ibarra, Pastor officiating.  Concluding services and interment will follow at Mt. View Cemetery.
     Frenchie, as most knew her was born March 24, 1962 in Deming to Victor and Martha “Marcy” (Dodds) Montano.  She graduated from Deming High School and over the years worked at several different jobs around Deming.  Frenchie was a free spirited person who even though difficulties came her way she always looked to the positive things in life and kept her faith.  She loved to dance, spend time with her family and friends, play bingo, and stop in at a casino when she had the chance. 
     Frenchie was especially proud of her grandchildren, they always made her day better.
    She is survived by her sons, Leo Martinez III of California, Jesse Martinez (Jessica) of Arizona; her parents, Victor “Chapo” Montano Sr. and Martha “Nana” Montano of Deming; brothers, Ruben Montano, Victor Montano Jr., and Victor Montano III of Deming; sister, Victoria Montano of Deming; and her 11 grandchildren.  Frenchie was preceded in death by her daughter, Sarah Jo Martinez, brother, Tommy Montano, and grandson Michael Max Martinez.
     Pallbearers will be Leo Martinez III, Jesse Martinez, Leo Martinez Jr., Ruben Montano, Victor Montano Jr., Victor Montano III, Antonio Jesus Martinez, Eliza “My G” DeFoor, Toni “My Wierdo” Baca, Brenda Loya, Yvonne Baca, Sonia Baca, and Melissa “Monkey” Chavez.
     In lieu of flowers Frenchie specifically requested for you to do something with your family.

Ruben L. Martinez

Ruben L. Martinez, 59, a Former resident of Deming entered eternal rest May 26, 2017 at UNM Hospital in Albuquerque, NM. Ruben is preceded in death by his parents Dora L. Martinez, and Juan T. Martinez along with one brother Jose Martinez all from Deming, NM. 

He is survived by his brothers Juan Martinez resident of Deming, Raul Martinez resident of Albuquerque, Henry Lopez resident of T or C, and Gilbert Martinez resident of Deming, several nieces, nephews, cousins, two daughters Veronica Martinez, Jessica Martinez, his grandchildren and one great-grandson. As a child and teen Ruben spent his time with his family and friends in Deming, NM once he became of age he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he traveled to many different places. Ruben often told stories about his adventures in the military.

After his return from the service he traveled and resided in many different states until his return to New Mexico. Ruben resided in Silver City, NM for 28 years where he lived with longtime friend and caretaker Frances Montes Resident of Silver City, along with his two stepdaughters Michelle Montes, and Felecia Montes, and stepson Andrew Montes. Ruben took pride in helping to raise his grandchildren Mariah, Jordan, and Yazmin, he spent his days enjoying his favorite TV shows, cracking jokes, pulling pranks, cooking and listening to music. Ruben was a strong-willed individual and fought any challenge wholeheartedly, He will be truly missed.

RUTH PARHAM, 80, resident of Deming passed away Friday June 2, 2017 at Mt. View Regional Medical Center in Las Cruces.
A memorial service will be this Thursday, June 8, 2017 at 10 o’clock in the morning at Baca’s Funeral Chapel with Dr. Robert Hamilton, Pastor of First Baptist Church officiating.  Cremation has been entrusted to Baca’s Mimbres Crematory.

Ruth was born October 25, 1936 in Anthony, Kansas to Olan and Lauretta Callaway.  She has lived in Deming about 15 years having previously lived in Lancaster, California. In Lancaster Ruth worked for Los Angeles County as a Certified Legal Assistant from which she retired in 1991.  After retirement she and her husband loved to travel in their RV and see new sights.  She loved cooking, music and was always able to find a bit of humor in most everything.  Above all things, her most special love was for her grandchildren who she absolutely adored.
​
She is survived by her husband, George O. Parham of Deming, sons, Kevin Parham of Deming, Kyle Parham of Mesa, AZ; daughter, Lauretta Hanshew of Bakersfield, CA; 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
