(Deming) -- Deming's annual Shop-With-A-Cop event is set for this Saturday.
Organization president Richard Cowles said they set a goal to raise at least $14,000 for this year's shopping event, which will provide approximately 400 Luna County school children with a $35 Kmart gift card.
The children get to shop, accompanied by a law enforcement or public safety professional.
Santa is expected to arrive at Kmart by helicopter about 8 a.m. Saturday to spend time with the children.
Shop-With-A-Cop was started 20+ years ago by K-Mart employee Carmen Baca, who teamed up with Deming school staffer Jenny Cowles to give children in need within the school system a chance at having Christmas gifts. At the same time, Baca and Cowles both believed it was important for children and police officers to get to know one another and to build a relationship. And so the event was born.
The children will arrive at K-Mart early Saturday morning and be treated to hot chocolate and cookies. Then, when it’s their turn to shop, they get to go in with an officer who guides them through the store.
In past years, children use their gift card not only to buy something for themselves, but also to treat a sibling.
