Silver City Police Chief Ed Reynolds announced Monday the two officers involved in the June 14th traffic stop of Francesca Estevez will not be fired, however.
Estevez, the district attorney for Luna, Grant and Hidalgo counties, was seen on video swerving across several lanes of traffic and stumbling during the stop.
Reynolds said officers did not test Estevez and Estevez was allowed to drive away from the scene. Officers reported the DA nearly ran into an officer's car and another curb as she drove off.
Reynolds said his officers failed to do their jobs correctly and there would be consequences, but their punishments would not be disclosed to the public.
Estevez did not immediately respond to an email from the Associated Press.
Earlier, New Mexico State Police Chief Pete Kassetas said his officer also was facing disciplinary action – but not termination – for her role in not following DUI protocol during the Estevez traffic stop.
