(Deming) – A convoy retracing a historic 1920 military vehicle trip across the United States will stop in Deming next weekend.

Military Vehicle Preservation Association vehicles will start arriving in Deming on Saturday afternoon, October 10th, and will leave Monday, October 12th.

As many as 65 historic military vehicles are expected, ranging from World War I-era to those just released from the U.S. Armed Forces inventories.

Organizers say they will be staying for two nights at Deming Roadrunner RV Park on East Pine Street.

The public is invited to visit Sunday, October 11th.

In 1920, the U.S. Army executed a motor convoy of various military vehicles across the country on the newly-formed Bankhead Highway. The 1920 route began at the White House, in Washington, D.C., and ended at Balboa Park in San Diego, California – some 3,300 miles and 116 days later.

The Military Vehicle Preservation Association is retracing the original 1920 Transcontinental Motor Convoy route along the Bankhead Highway to mark the 95th anniversary of the route.

The convoy left Washington, D.C. on Saturday, September 19th,

and is scheduled to arrive in San Diego, California, on Saturday, October 17th.

Organizers are billing the trip as America’s longest veterans’

parade, honoring the service and sacrifice of veterans of all generations.

(Deming) – An area ranch for troubled youth is suing a state police officer in federal court over his investigation of abuse allegations.

Scott and Colette Chandler, who operate the Tierra Blanca Ranch Youth Program, filed a complaint last week against New Mexico State Police officer Felipe Gonzales.

According to the suit, the Chandlers allege authorities and state child welfare workers used a ranch employee's accidental death as a way to launch an investigation on behalf of a disgruntled parent.

The couple said state officials entered the ranch without a search warrant and interviewed youth residents without permission.

The embattled ranch previously settled a lawsuit against the state in February 2014 and agreed to some state oversight.

The New Mexico State Police did not immediately return a message from the Associated Press seeking comment.

Mayor Benny Jasso received the Certified Municipal Official designation from the Municipal Officials Leadership Institute sponsored by the New Mexico Municipal League.

Jasso completed three programs of instruction:  Education, which consisted of two basic education sessions plus electives; Governance, which focused on necessary traits for effective leaders; and Leadership, described as a course of self-directed electives.    Also, the New Mexico Education Designated to Generate Excellence – or NM EDGE – program presented Administrative Secretaries Erica Carlos and Mary Mackey with the Certified Public Official certification, which required completing 18 classes in fields such as knowing your government, management, human resources, ethics, leadership and information technology.

“Most Wanted Offender” Found Not Guilty

9/25/2015

PictureNathan Rowland, 34
(Deming) – A Silver City man who was one of the New Mexico Corrections Department’s Most Wanted Offenders in 2013 has been released from the Luna County Detention Center after being acquitted.

Sixth Judicial District Chief Deputy Janice Schryer said 34-year-old Nathan Rowland was found not guilty by a jury Thursday on charges of aggravated battery and tampering with evidence in connection with the stabbing of another Luna County inmate last December.

Schryer said the victim and witnesses, all of whom were inmates at the time, refused to testify about the December 29th stabbing which resulted in the victim suffering a collapsed lung and other injuries.

Schryer said a surveillance video of the incident didn’t show a weapon, and a weapon was never found.

Rowland was incarcerated after being arrested in Silver City in February of 2013 on outstanding warrants and in connection with the shooting of a Las Cruces man at the rest stop between Deming and Silver City.

At the time of his arrest, Rowland, a known member of the “Los Carnales” gang, was listed as one of the state’s Most Wanted Offenders.

Schryer said charges in the rest stop shooting were dropped earlier this month because the victim in that case could not be located.

Rowland was represented by Las Cruces defense attorney George Harrison, and the trial was held before Sixth Judicial District Court Judge Jennifer Delaney.
