Deming to Hold Meeting on Water Storage Pond Tuesday

2/27/2017

Picture
(Deming) – An outdoor area designed to provide local families recreational opportunities such as fishing, paddle boating, picnic areas, bird watching, and walking trails is being planned for the Voiers’ Pit park area.
Deming City Administrator Aaron Sera said the city is working on a water conservation project that will utilize reclaimed water.   The goal is to put the water to better use and send reclaimed water to all city parks, the golf course and the cemetery.   The new storage pond will hold about 25 million gallons of treated and reclaimed water and can be used for human recreational purposes.   Sera said that currently the city dumps most of the reclaimed water on leased city farm land.

The project would include lining the bottom of the Pit Park with a liner to hold in the water. Then reclaimed water would be sent to the pond to be used as needed.  The pond could be stocked with fish and recreational areas developed.
The project will have several phases as funds become available.

A public meeting to inform the public on the plans regarding the recreational resuse storage pond project will be held Tuesday February 28th at 4 p.m. at the Silva Conference Center 119 East Pine St.

4-H Students Grocery Shop for Local Shelter

2/24/2017

Picture
(Deming) – For the 12th time in as many years, Luna County 4-H, Luna County Farm and Livestock Bureau and BorderBelles teamed up to call attention to the abundance, safety and affordability of food – and benefit victims of domestic violence at the same time.

Laynee Kuenstler, Family and Consumer Science Agent with the Luna County Extension Service said the Luna County 4-H Council, with financial support from the local Farm Bureau and the BorderBelles Cowbelle organization, recently shopped at Peppers Supermarket as part of the “Our Food Link” program, a national Farm Bureau initiative designed to reach consumers of all ages and backgrounds with information about today’s agriculture. The food items were then donated to the Healing House, Deming's domestic violence shelter.

About 15 local 4-H members spent $1,200 on perishable food during their shopping trip to Peppers.
Farm Bureau officials say the “Our Food Link” outreach is more important than ever because the average American is now at least three generations removed from the farm.

In fact, farm and ranch families make up less than 2 percent of the U.S. population.
