September 2014 Vandalism of the Sam Baca Aquatic Center
(Deming) – A Deming man has been charged in the September 4th, 2013, vandalism of the Sam Baca Aquatic Center.
Deming Police Chief Brandon Gigante said DNA evidence led to charges being filed on 19-year-old Justice Sutton.
Sutton, who was 16 at the time of the pool destruction, has been charged with burglary, larceny, causing over $1,000 in criminal damage and conspiracy.
Gigante said Sutton’s DNA was entered into a data bank in April of 2015 after he was arrested locally on a forgery charge.
Crime technicians in Santa Fe recently matched Sutton’s DNA with DNA collected from the pool crime scene in 2013.
Gigante said Sutton was incarcerated on unrelated charges in Las Cruces at the time his office was notified of the match, and that Sutton was then interviewed and confessed to the pool vandalism.

The city’s insurance adjuster determined the vandalism damage to the aquatic center was over $100,000 because of contamination from fire extinguishers which were discharged throughout the facility and into at least one of the pools.
Gigante said the investigation is continuing, because they believe two or three other people helped Sutton damage the aquatic center.

(Deming) – Dr. Seuss’ quote, “There is fun to be done!,” is the organizational mantra for this Saturday’s Deming’s Night Out event.
Activities for Deming’s Night Out will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday at Voier’s “Pit” Park.
Sponsored by the City of Deming, the event is promising music, games, educational activities and prizes.
Everything will be free of charge.
This is Deming’s second such event.
The first, held on a Friday night last September, was organized by Deming City Councilman Dr. Victor Cruz as a way to uphold a campaign promise of creating more fun things to do for families in Deming.
City organizers said last fall’s event was well-attended and the response was positive, so they wanted to continue holding Deming’s Night Out events.
Again, the second Deming’s Night Out will be this Saturday, February 27th, at Voier’s “Pit” Park.  Activities will begin at 4 p.m. and are free of charge.

Fire destroys historic mill along Continental Divide trail

SILVER CITY, N.M. (AP) — Forest officials say a human-sparked fire is to blame for the destruction of a historic mill along the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail.
The Silver City Ranger District released details of the fire Tuesday and asked the public to call if they had any information.
Officials were assessing the damage but it appears the flames destroyed most of the wooden elements of the site. The so-called arrastra, or a primitive mill, was used for crushing gold ore during the 1800s.
The site was first restored about 20 years ago with the help of the Gila Fish and Gun Club. It was rehabilitated again in early 2000 by the district's recreation staff and Youth Conservation Corps.
Officials say damaging or destroying archaeological resources can result in fines or jail time.
