(Deming) – Deming Police Department officers are participating in the Special Olympics Torch Run Tuesday.
Deming Police Chief Brandon Gigante said Lt. Kathleen Schindler is organizing the PD’s bike patrol officers to link officers from Hidalgo County to those in Dona Ana County.
Gigante said Deming officers will receive the torch at mile marker 81 on Interstate 10 at approximately 7 p.m. Tuesday, and will relay the torch until they meet up with Dona Ana County officers between Deming and Las Cruces.
Gigante said at last six Deming PD officers will be riding as part of the torch run.
The New Mexico Special Olympics website describes the mission of the Law Enforcement Torch Run as promoting community awareness of sports training, athletic competitions and other initiatives offered by New Mexico Special Olympics.
Organizers say the torch run also provides encouragement and hope to the athletes and families of Special Olympians.
