Deming Police Chief Bobby Orosco said 14-year-old Emanuel Young was charged with unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon onto school grounds and larceny of a firearm.
Orosco said Young was summoned to the school office after peers reported to school authorities that he had a handgun.
School officials located the gun – a 45-caliber Springfield XD-S – in Young’s backpack and immediately notified Deming Police Department officers.
Orosco said Young admitted to stealing the gun Saturday from a local pawn shop, but said he had forgotten it was in his backpack.
The gun was not loaded and Young did not have ammunition in his backpack.
Officials did not release whether Young had threatened anyone with the gun, shown it to classmates, or simply talked about having it.
Orosco said the investigation is continuing.
